Braun joins DragonSpeed for Rolex 24

DragonSpeed Racing has announced that Colin Braun will join its 10Star entry for the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 25-26. The 31-year-old Texan native will share the stars-and-stripes bedecked LMP2-class ORECA O7-Gibson with team regulars Henrik Hedman and Ben Hanley for the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship season-opening endurance classic. A fourth driver will be announced at later date, according to the team.

Braun, who challenged for the overall IMSA Prototype championship in 2018 with CORE autosport, has 10 IMSA wins as well as two American Le Mans Series LMPC-class titles to his name. He is currently without a regular drive for 2020 following the decision of CORE autosport to close its DPi program, although DragonSpeed team principal Elton Julian said there could be additional outings for Braun with his team beyond Daytona.

“It’s a real pleasure to welcome Colin to the team,” said Julian. “As one of our toughest rivals from LMPC days, it’s great to have him on our side. He’s a proven winner who quietly gets the job done every time, and we look forward to his technical input as well. We can only run a silver-ranked third driver in IMSA after the Rolex, but are looking at the possibility of having Colin in the 10Star car for some of our European races, including Le Mans.”

The downsized Action Express Racing team will pin its hopes on a single entry to win the Rolex 24 At Daytona, where Mike Conway will complete the four-driver rotation inside the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R.

Conway will share the V8-powered machine with 2018 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Prototype title winners Felipe Nasr and Pipo Derani, and Filipe Albuquerque, who joins Derani and Albuquerque from the shuttered No. 5 AXR Cadillac program.

“I’m excited to be back with Action Express Racing, and it’s been fun so far driving with them since 2017,” said Conway, whose 2019 Rolex 24 was sidelined by visa issues and losing his helmet after returning a rental car.

“We’ve had some good results, but obviously winning at Daytona has eluded us. I raced with Albuquerque last year, and I’ll be teaming up again with Nasr – whom I drove with my last time at Daytona. So I know both of them pretty well as teammates. I feel we have one of the strongest lineups for this year’s race, and I think we can have a good result.”

Risi Competizione has announced its plans to compete at the upcoming Rolex 24 At Daytona IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship endurance race, January 23-26, and Roar Before the 24 test days, January 3-5, with a single-car effort.

The legendary Houston, Texas-based team will again field a Ferrari 488 GTLM in its traditional No. 62 ‘Rosso Corsa’ red livery for the 58th annual running of the twice-around-the-clock American enduro classic.

“We will once again return to Daytona for the 24-hour race and the early January testing,” said longtime IMSA team owner Giuseppe Risi. “This is always one of the most important races on the calendar so we will be there and ready to go against what is always a challenging field of competitors. We always race to win and after our victory at Petit Le Mans to close out this year, we want to start with a win all the more in 2020.”

Drivers for the Rolex 24 will include the three Risi Competizione Petit Le Mans winners, England’s James Calado, Italy’s Alessandro Pier Guidi and Brazil’s Daniel Serra. Additionally, Ferrari GT factory driver and Risi regular, Italy’s Davide Rigon, will join the trio.

Calado and Serra are scheduled to handle the driving duties at the three-day Roar Before The 24 testing in the Risi Ferrari 488 GTLM on behalf of the team.

Risi Competizione’s 2020 Rolex 24 effort is the 17th entry since 1998, which has included three class victories, and four additional podium finishes, including a second-place finish in 2019.

Further racing plans for 2020 by the Risi Competizione team remain under consideration.

Dixon set for Bathurst 12H debut after the Daytona 24

NTT IndyCar Series star Scott Dixon will make his Bathurst debut in February’s 12 Hour endurance race on Mount Panorama. The New Zealander will share an R-Motorsport Aston Martin Vantage GT3 with Australian Supercars veteran and two-time Bathurst 1000 winner Rick Kelly and England’s Jake Dennis, who earned pole for the 2019 Bathurst 12 Hour for R-Motorsport on its way to second in the race.

“I’ve done GT racing as such with the four Le Mans 24-hour races and other endurance events, but never GT3,” Dixon said. “I love doing the long-distance races. It complements quite well with the IndyCar Series at the moment to do the Daytona 24-hour and Sebring 12-hour, but also Petit Le Mans, which was the first endurance race I did back in 1999.

“I know Rick Kelly from my years racing in Australia and I also teamed up with his brother to do the Gold Coast races back in 2010. Rick is a great guy. I haven’t had the opportunity to meet Jake Dennis yet, but I’m looking forward to meeting him. I’ve heard that he’s super fast and very good.

“With the caliber of the team and the drivers that I am joining, we’ve got to go in with the mindset of we’re going to be successful. I just hope I can get up to speed quick enough and be a good addition to what is going to be a very strong team. I’m really looking forward to it and it’s really nice to get back to Australia.”

Ricardo Juncos will not dispatch his WeatherTech SportsCar Championship team to Daytona next month for IMSA’s season-opener, and if his efforts during the brief off-season are fruitful, a new owner will take possession of Juncos Racing’s Cadillac DPi-V.R.

“Everything is ready to go, but it is so difficult to find a budget and drivers in this short period of time,” he told RACER. “We can’t make Daytona on time. I was trying to partner with a team from Europe, or lease [the car]. If I can sell it, I will.”

Juncos Racing’s absence from the Rolex 24 At Daytona, and possibly the remainder of the season, adds to a slight downturn in entries for IMSA’s top class. A number of interested parties have inquired about purchasing the No. 50 Cadillac after it took part in October’s 10-hour Petit Le Mans event, but so far, it remains unsold.

Along with the shuttered CORE autosport Nissan Onroak DPi effort, Action Express Racing has downsized from two full-time Cadillac entries to one, and with Juncos out of the picture, a DPi field consisting of two Acura ARX-05s, two Mazda RT24-Ps, and four Cadillacs could lead the field at Daytona.

Juncos made its IMSA debut at the 2019 Rolex 24 and entered the first seven rounds of the year, but was forced to halt the program when Victor Franzoni suffered a frightening crash at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in early July. Although the hearty Brazilian open-wheeler recovered quickly from the accident, the new Cadillac DPi-V.R was mostly destroyed.

A new tub was sourced from Dallara, along with bodywork, suspension, and major portions of the car that were needed to rebuild the No. 50. Skipping the next two months of IMSA racing, Juncos assembled the money to prepare the new car and return at Petit Le Mans where the team finished 10th in class.

Deegan signs driver development contract with Ford

Rising NASCAR star Hailie Deegan has signed a development contract with Ford Performance.

The 18-year-old will spend 2020 competing across multiple series with DGR-Crosley, which announced its own switch to Ford last week. She will contest all 20 races in the ARCA Menards Series, as well as select events in the Multimatic Motorsports Mustang GT4 in IMSA’s Michelin Pilot Challenge.

Deegan is scheduled to make her debut behind the wheel of a Mustang GT4 at the upcoming IMSA Roar Before the 24 test session at Daytona International Speedway on January 3. That will serve as preparation for her first event, which will be in the Michelin Pilot Challenge opener at Daytona on Friday, Jan. 24, where she will partner with fellow Ford Performance development driver Chase Briscoe.

“Hailie has shown in her brief time behind the wheel of a stock car that she’s got what it takes to be successful,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “Our goal is to put her on a path to realize our shared goal of winning championships, and part of that is gaining experience on tracks such as road courses and superspeedways. We feel this year will serve as a good foundation for what lies ahead.”

Deegan registered three ARCA Menards Series West (formerly NASCAR K&N Series West) victories in two full seasons, and is coming off a 2019 campaign that included two wins and third in the final standings. In 14 starts, she registered three poles, eight top-five and 11 top-10 finishes. In addition, she made six ARCA Menards Series starts, with her best finish being fifth at Lucas Oil Raceway.

“I could not be more excited to join Ford Performance and DGR-Crosley,” said Deegan, whose father Brian has enjoyed success in Ford machinery in rallycross and off-road racing.

“It became clear quickly that I align with the Ford Performance vision of driver development and our shared drive to win. It is also extra-special to get to race with Ford, a family company, that already had ties to my family. Growing up watching my dad race a Ford, and now to be able to do the same thing is very cool.

“It’s also important to me to be teamed up with a hard-working group such as DGR with like minded vision and goals. We are all committed to work as hard as it takes to finish on top. I look forward to the upcoming season and learning as much as possible to get me closer to accomplishing my goals of winning races.”

Shane van Gisbergen will join AIM Vasser Sullivan for the 2020 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

The New Zealander will join Townsend Bell and Frankie Montecalvo in the No.12 Lexus RC F GT3 for what will be his fifth appearance at the storied endurance event.

van Gisbergen will be making his fifth Rolex 24 at Daytona start. In four previous races at Daytona he has two top-10 finishes, a second in 2015 and eighth in 2014 in the GTD class. He will join Townsend Bell and Frankie Montecalvo behind the wheel of the No. 12 AIM VASSER SULLIVAN Lexus RC F GT3. In 2019, the No. 12 AVS Lexus finished second in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

The 2016 Supercars champion and Bathurst 12 Hour winner has a best finish of second at the Rolex, which he achieved in 2015, and he said he is optimistic about his prospects this time around.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for me to race again at the Rolex 24 at Daytona,” said Van Gisbergen. “I’ve missed the American style of racing, so when the phone rang it didn’t take long for me to say yes! I want to thank Jimmy Vasser, James “Sulli” Sullivan, Andrew Bordin and all the guys at AIM for this opportunity. I think with the Lexus RC F GT3, the experience of the AVS team and the driver line-up that we have for the 2020 Rolex 24, we’ll be a real contender. The honeymoon phase for new NASCAR Cup champion Kyle Busch is coming to an end as post-season celebrations turn to preparing for his Rolex 24 At Daytona debut.

Fresh from earning his second title for the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry team, the Nevada native is preparing for his first major endurance race, which starts in the form of testing at the January 3-5 Roar Before The 24 event at Daytona with the AIM Vasser Sullivan team.

The collaboration between AIM Autosport and team owners Jimmy Vasser and James ‘Sully’ Sullivan, with its factory affiliation to Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus, offers the 34-year-old an opportunity to stay within the manufacturer’s family while adding a major international race to his resume.

“It’s definitely something different and something that I’ve always given some thought to — whenever the opportunity would present itself, maybe get a chance to go out there and have some endurance racing under my belt,” Busch said. “Thanks to Lexus and everybody at [AIM Vasser Sullivan] Racing, I’m really looking forward to it. Talked to Vasser a little bit and Sully a little bit, and those guys, it’s been pretty cool thus far just to kind of get a sense of what the car is and the race, and the atmosphere of the events.”

The Roar and the Jan. 23-26 Rolex 24 will mark Busch’s second outing in sports car competition. His first, an exhausting Grand-Am Rolex Series affair in 2009 with fellow American Scott Speed driving a Chip Ganassi Racing Daytona Prototype at Daytona International Speedway, lasted less than three hours.

With AVS, he’ll share a production-based Lexus RC F GT3 with ex-IndyCar driver Jack Hawksworth from England and teenage American Parker Chase. Overtaking prototypes and faster cars from the GT Le Mans class can complicate the lives of drivers in Busch’s GT Daytona category, which means contact will happen on more than one occasion throughout the 24 hours.

In the truest sense of the word, Busch will be tasked with enduring in each stint behind the wheel of the No. 14 Lexus and, despite trading paint on a regular basis in NASCAR, he knows that avoiding damage is key to success at the Rolex 24.

“I’ve never necessarily thought about going into a race to have to think about body contact or anything like that,” he said. “I just go out there and try to run clean and run hard and do the best I can for my team. You’ve got to keep the car clean for at least 20 hours in order to be able to have a shot to go race it in the final four.

“I’ve driven the prototypes before. It was years ago … there was a race at Daytona in the summer and I baked in that one. So that was no fun, but was able to at least get some experience at it and get a taste of it. Really looking forward to being able to go run a 24 with swapping out drivers and everything else here.”

Unlike his No. 18 Camry, Busch will need to compromise on the chassis and aerodynamic settings on the No. 14 Lexus to suit his co-drivers.

“That’s definitely going to be somewhat of a learning curve,” he continued. “When I did it the first time with Scott Speed, we had different driving styles for sure. There were some things that he liked, some things that I didn’t like and vice versa. So, you’re always going to have that with multiple drivers behind the car.

“But I think the biggest thing is just going to be looking at Jack [Hawksworth], obviously being our top driver on my car, to look at him and some of his driving tendencies and the things that he does, and try to emulate that as much as possible to be able to be comfortable in running the same stuff. We’ve spoken on the phone a couple times, so I’ve gotten a sense of what to expect at least. But you never really know until you get your butt in the seat and behind the wheel.”

Spending time on Toyota Racing Development’s simulator in a virtual RCF GT3 at Daytona will take place before the Roar. Once he gets to the paddock, Busch will add his name to a fraternity of stars from different forms of racing who’ve entered the legendary event.

“Definitely, I’ve watched the 24 Hours a few times and obviously I’ve kind of looked up and seen some of the NASCAR guys like [Jamie] McMurry, [Kyle] Larson, my brother, [A.J.] Allmendinger, and some of those guys have done it before and they’ve been successful at it,” he said. “And then you see the IndyCar guys come over and they get a shot at it. Some of the retired IndyCar guys, [Helio] Castroneves and [Juan Pablo] Montoya and some others that are doing it now. And it’s interesting just to see, how many different backgrounds all these drivers have.

“You know, when I was a kid and growing up in Las Vegas, Joey Hand was a name that was on a lot of people’s radars. And then I watched and followed the 24-hour stuff and there he is — he’s doing it, and doing real well at it. So, it’s pretty cool to see that and to know all the different backgrounds that drivers are coming from and being able to get out there and race against them. I look forward to that.”

The Rolex 24 could be the first of many extra-curricular races for Busch to pursue.

Unexpectedly, a global drivers’ championship created by Indy 500 regular JR Hildebrand has caught Busch’s attention, and with the formation of the rogue ‘Rufus Legacy’ contest, which awards points to drivers from all major disciplines, the NASCAR star wants to win the title named after 1963 Indy 500 winner Rufus ‘Parnelli’ Jones.

“There’s certainly Le Mans; the last couple of years it was on the NASCAR off-week, and so I was actually going to try to put it together this year, because there’s this Rufus thing with Hildebrand there,” he said. “So with that going on I was like, ‘OK, if I’m going to run the [Rolex] 24 Hour, I might as well figure out if I can do Le Mans; I might as well figure out if I can do this and do that and do some other things.’

“And, obviously [the] Indy [500’s] been on my radar, I haven’t quite been able to get everything worked out to be able to get there yet, but would love to try that. And you know, Baja 1000 I think happens next year after the NASCAR season’s over. So, that could certainly be an option. I mean there’s all kinds of opportunities that hopefully will continue to pop up. And this year might be the year that, hell, I go for it all and give it a shot and see if we can’t win that Rufus thing.

Channeling his inner Parnelli Jones, who was a terror at Indy, in NASCAR, Trans Am, in off-road racing and short ovals, Busch loves the idea of mastering multiple racing disciplines and seeing how all the points add up in the Rufus Legacy championship.

While two NASCAR Cup titles would satisfy most drivers, Busch has Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden, and other stars of the sport in his crosshairs. Amassing as many points as possible and earning the crown in Hildebrand’s independent drivers-only championship is the goal. The contest’s namesake would certainly approve.

“I think what makes it even more interesting and cool is that it’s all sorts of different forms of motorsports,” he continued. “You know, it’s not just your day job. Obviously it includes your day job, but then it’s Indy cars, it’s sports cars, it’s off road trucks, it’s Formula 1 cars. Dirt late models are in it. Sprint cars are in it, midgets are in it, the Snowball Derby’s in it. So, it’s pretty awesome that all that’s in there and, hell, out of all of those, I could probably figure out how to do all but about two of them.”

40 cars set for Roar Before the 24

As soon as the holidays are over, the 2020 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season will get under way with the annual Roar Before the Rolex 24 At Daytona test session on the weekend of Jan. 3-5. The event includes three days of open testing for both the WeatherTech Championship and the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, while the IMSA Prototype Challenge kicks off its six-race season with a three-hour battle on Saturday, Jan. 4.

The Roar is mandatory for all teams planning to participate in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, which means the same cars on the Roar entry list released today are expected to return for the 58th Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 23-26. Today’s 40-car entry list revealed teams, vehicles and car numbers; the entry list with drivers included will be released on Monday, Dec. 30. Click here for today’s list.

A total of 40 cars from 12 different manufacturers have been entered for the Roar. There will be eight cars in the lead Daytona Prototype international class from three different manufacturers – Acura, Cadillac and Mazda. Among the entries is the 2019 Rolex 24 At Daytona-winning No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R and the 2019 WeatherTech Championship DPi title-winning No. 6 Acura Team Penske ARX-05.

Substantial year-over-year growth is found in the Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) class, where seven cars from three different constructors – ORECA, Ligier and Multimatic/Riley – have been entered. Included among these entries is last year’s WeatherTech Championship LMP2 champion team, PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports, with a pair of ORECAs and the No. 81 DragonSpeed USA ORECA that won last year’s Rolex 24.

Seven cars also are entered in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class, representing four different manufacturers: Chevrolet, BMW, Ferrari and Porsche. The 2019 Rolex 24-winning No. 25 BMW Team RLL M8 GTE is returning to defend its victory, as is the No. 912 Porsche GT Team that won the 2019 WeatherTech Championship title. Porsche will be introducing its new-for-2020 911 RSR to GTLM competition at the Roar, while the new, mid-engined Corvette C8.R will be debuting as well.

The GT Daytona class again features the largest field with 18 entries from nine different manufacturers: Porsche, Lamborghini, Lexus, Aston Martin, Acura, Ferrari, Mercedes-AMG, Audi and BMW.

The GRT Grasser Racing Team – which won both the Rolex 24 and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Presented by Advance Auto Parts in 2019 – will prepare for its first full season of WeatherTech Championship competition in 2020 supporting three Lamborghini Huracán GT3 entries. The 2019 WeatherTech Championship GTD champion Meyer Shank Racing team also returns with a pair of Acura NSX GT3 machines.

The Roar entry list for the Michelin Pilot Challenge features a 37-car field, including 26 Grand Sport class entries and 11 in the TCR class. This test is not mandatory for Michelin Pilot Challenge teams, so look for even more entries when the series returns to Daytona for the four-hour BMW Endurance Challenge season opener on Friday, Jan. 24.

Speaking of season openers, the IMSA Prototype Challenge will have an 18-car field to kick off its 2020 campaign on Saturday, Jan. 4. That entry list is available here.

The three-hour race starts at 12:15 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold which is available at nbcsports.com/gold/trackpass. Live Timing & Scoring data and IMSA Radio commentary of the race also will be available on IMSA.com.
