Ralph Dale Earnhardt, Sr. (April 29, 1951 -- February 18, 2001) was an American race car driver and team owner, best known for his involvement in stock car racing for NASCAR. Earnhardt began his career in 1975 when he drove in the 1975 World

600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway as part of the Winston Cup Series (later the Sprint Cup Series). Considered one of the best NASCAR drivers of all time, Earnhardt won a total of 76 races over the course of his career, including one Daytona 500 victory in 1998. He earned 7 NASCAR Winston Cup Championships, which is tied for the most all time with

Richard Petty. His aggressive driving style earned him the nickname "The Intimidator". While driving in the 2001 Daytona 500, Earnhardt died of a basilar skull fracture in a last-lap crash at Daytona International Speedway on February 18, 2001. He has been inducted into numerous halls of fame, including the inaugural class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

GET THIS, TRUE STORY: We camped in the infield for the 1989 Daytona 500 next day. Very early in the race, Dale's car had a major problem, any time he pulled out of a draft into fresh air, HE LOST A CYLINDER. Pull back in line, and the car ran fine. LOOK IT UP. In spite of this BIG problem, Dale managed to DRAFT near the front most of the day, usually

behind Ken Schrader. During a re-start very late in the race, we had walked as close as you could get to the apron smack dab in the middle of turns 3 & 4. During the 2nd lap of that late re-start, the biggest pack of cars was back to full speed, and due to a lengthy pit stop, Dale was WAY BACK in that pack. As the main pack of cars approached turn 3, they were

ALL racing 2 & 3 wide, and Dale was so high, almost "in the marbles". BUT SUDDENLY, HE SHOT DOWN TO THE BOTTOM SO FAST, IT SCARED THE PISS OUT OF US AND THE HUGE CROWD GATHERED THERE. WE THOUGHT HE WAS GONNA HIT THE INNER GUARD RAIL & MOW US ALL DOWN. BUT HE STUCK HIS CAR, THEN, SHOT BACK UP

HIGH BY THE TIME HE WAS INTO TURN 4, AS IF BOTH TURNS WERE "A SLALOM COURSE"......AND GOD AS MY WITNESS, HE PASSED AT LEAST 8 TO 10 CARS DURING THAT INSANE MANEUVER. He was passing cars DURING the drop off those high banks, and passing yet more cars as he shot back up high. There had to be around 300 ( or more )

people where were were standing, and we all jumped back & gasped, the whole crowd, thinking we were about to be mowed down by that 3 car dropping that fast. TO THIS VERY DAY, I HAVE NEVER WITNESSED SUCH AN INCREDIBLE FEAT OF DRIVING A RACE CAR. Dale somehow saw "a keyhole" in that "slalom move" he made. IT DIDN'T SEEM

REAL. Even all the Ford fans in that crowd there, were all saying: "THAT M-F'er SURE CAN DRIVE!!!" It's the only thing we all talked about for the rest of the race. I think he finished somewhere around 13th? BUT NO TV CAMERA EVER SHOWED THE WORLD THAT MOVE WE WITNESSED IN REAL LIFE. "The pass in the grass" wasn't SHIT compared to what

we witnessed that man do right there. And I will never forget that maneuver he did, way back in the pack, where NO TV camera's aired it, as long as I live. I wish other people WHO WERE ACTUALLY THERE TOO......would come forward to back my claim, because it's true.

What people don't know is that Daytona was not only Dale's Achilles Heel, but also, in the end, it would be his Waterloo, given that, three years after his lone triumph in the Daytona 500, Dale would suffer fatal injuries in a last-lap crash in this race.

Beautiful whitewash of Dale Earnhardt. The most vicious, heartless driver of the 1980's. He ran everyone off track with tactics thats where outlawed finally by nascar. I don't like that he died. He should have retired long before. But no sympathy for him. Even his Daytona 500 win was because he/his team cheated. The same car showed up at Talledega, and was ruled illegal

Had he not died, NASCAR wouldn't have had the safety push in the early 2000s, or at least not like they did. They waited until they lost a big name driver to jump on this. Drivers like Adam Petty, Tony Roper, John Nemecheck, etc, weren't enough for them to start seeing the problem with the cars or the walls. NASCAR very well could've lost more drivers had this crash not happened

I saw the crash a lot closer than in this video.
No one wants to say something bad about a dead guy.

What I saw was Earnhardt moving down on the Coors Silver car with the lighter back end of the 3 car
to keep the silver car from passing.

Earnhardt may have expected that the Coors car would give way.

Earnhardt would never have given way.

That started Earnhardt first going left, then right, and into the wall.

That is not the way it has been worded in the video... "two cars contact" is true.....but it was Earnhardt hitting another car that started it.

Earnhardt going into a wall....a view he had sent many drivers into.....I'm sure Dale Earnhardt would have understood.

It is impossible to make a trip to Daytona International Speedway and not think about Dale Earnhardt. Or to witness a crash, in any race, and not be thankful for the safety advancements NASCAR has made in the two decades since Earnhardt’s death.

Sunday afternoon before the 63rd running of the Daytona 500, ESPN will air a new E60 documentary on Earnhardt’s crash 20 years ago and its lasting effect on the sport. Award-winning ESPN senior writer Ryan McGee was the reporter for the story, with the program produced by Scott Cikowski, Jason Kostura, and John Minton.

Recognizable names like Dale Earnhardt Jr., former NASCAR President Mike Helton, and Kyle Petty make appearances. There is also insight from Dr. Steve Bohannon, the trauma physician who was the first to reach Earnhardt’s car after the accident and remained with Earnhardt until he was pronounced dead at Halifax Medical Center. Also included is Ryan Newman, who discusses his violent accident at the end of last year’s Daytona 500.

RACER received an early screening of the show with the agreement of not giving too much away. E60 Presents – Intimidator: The Lasting Legacy of Dale Earnhardt is set to air at noon ET Sunday.

It is emotional and eye-opening viewing.

Earnhardt remains the last driver to lose his life in a NASCAR national series race. However, he also was the last in what had been a rash of driver deaths, particularly during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. Among them were Kyle Petty’s 19-year-old son Adam, Kenny Irwin Jr., Tony Roper, and Blaise Alexander.

Earnhardt was the sport’s biggest star, and losing the seven-time champion seemed impossible. And when it happened, it couldn’t go without something changing. As viewers will understand, though, it’s possible Earnhardt’s death could have been prevented.

There is a misconception in the racing world that the Earnhardt tragedy was the reason or forced NASCAR’s hand into making significant safety advances. It’s worth a reminder that there were already innovations being worked through when Earnhardt died, including soft walls and the development of the HANS device.

The HANS was introduced to NASCAR in 1991 but not mandatory at the time of his death. Five drivers were wearing the HANS device in the 2001 Daytona 500. Earnhardt was not one of them. He also wasn’t wearing a full-faced helmet, which would also later become mandatory. Had Earnhardt been wearing both devices on February 18, 2001, the result of his accident might have been different.

It is also worth pointing out that Earnhardt was against NASCAR having its drivers use the HANS device, as the documentary also relates.

Yet, there is no denying that Earnhardt’s death did accelerate the sport’s safety processes. The HANS device was officially mandated in October of 2001. Two years later, NASCAR required that all tracks have SAFER barriers installed.

Updates to both the cars and the tracks have continued since then, and NASCAR opened its R&D Center in 2003. Everything from competition related items to safety innovations can on the Concord, North Carolina facility
