Seiler, Gregory, Buck among winners as Classic Sebring 12 concludes

sharetweetemail
By: HSR | December 2, 2018 11:41 PM A determined and deserving group of Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) competitors broke through for victories this weekend in the Third Annual HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour that concluded Sunday with the presentation of custom-made HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour edition B.R.M. Chronographes watches to four overall Run Group winners at Sebring International Raceway.A retro-tribute race to the timeless Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, which will be run for the 67th time this March, the Classic Sebring 12 Hour format featured each of the four Run Groups taking to the track four different times the past two days.Saturday’s schedule included the first three 42-minute rounds for each Group — appropriately within the span of a 12-hour period — while the fourth and final segment races today determined the overall winners.Group A was controlled from the start by a pair of McClendon International Lolas that scored a one-two group finish and all four segment wins.Toni Seiler drove the 1969 No. 77 Lola T70 to the overall Group A win that was fueled in part by first-place finishes in Rounds 1 and 3. The victory finally put Seiler, a regular “HSR Classics” competitor from Switzerland, on the top step of the Sebring podium after finishing second in Group A in the previous runnings of the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour in 2016 and 2017.The McClendon International sweep was completed by the second-place 1969 No. 127 Lola T165 of Italian driver Mauro Casedei and Seiler’s Swiss countryman Andy Feigenwinter. The No. 127 won Rounds 2 and 4, leading the No. 77 to the line in both segments, but in the end Seiler had enough overall pace to maintain first place throughout the race. The Lolas were the only competitors in Group A to complete a total of 68 laps.Third-place went to the British-based 1965 No. 66 Ford GT40 of Karsten LeBlanc and Christopher Milner while the Cobra Automotive 1965 No. 69 Ford Mustang 2+2 of Adam Lindemann and Jim Pace was fourth, the highest-finishing GT car in Group A.The Group B victory went to the Phil Reilly Co. 1974 No. 26 Chevron B26 of Gray Gregory and Randy Buck that rebounded from an early-weekend hit from another competitor for their first HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour race win.The No. 26 team initially battled with the similar Chevron of John Harrold, Ryan Harrold and Kevin Wheeler who saw their chances for a third-straight HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour win in the Team Mean/KMW Motorsports No. 94 entry end in Round 2.After winning Round 1 and leading the second segment, the No. 94 Chevron ironically suffered electrical issues similar to what knocked Gregory and Buck from contention in last year’s HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour. After the Harrolds and Wheeler retired, the biggest threats the No. 26 team faced came from some quick GT entries.Swiss driver Alain Ruede kept his 1982 No. 21 Chevy Camaro IROC on the lead lap the entire race, joining the winning Chevron as the only Group B competitors to complete 68 laps.Ruede finished second overall and took GT class honors while second in GT and third overall in Group B for the second-straight year was Todd Treffert in his Speedconcepts 1974 No. 141 Porsche 911 IROC.After a narrow loss in 2017’s Group C race, John Reisman and the Hudson Historics 2010 No. 33 Coyote Corvette Daytona Prototype team were determined to win this year’s HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour.Leading the majority of last year’s race only to slip to second in the final segment, Reisman convincingly held first place for the entirety of this weekend’s HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour. He led the standings for all four segments to take the victory despite serious challenges from several potent prototypes.Second place went to the GMT Racing 2005 No. 2 Audi R8 LMP of Travis Engen while Tommy Dreelan and Aaron Scott were a close third in their Sebring debuts in the Celtic Speed 2009 No. 68 Oreca FLM09 “PC” car. The podium trio all completed 70 laps. The top GT finisher in Group C was the Steve Cohen and Ray Snowdon driven Sundry Racing 1995 No. 5 Oldsmobile Aurora GTS. Cohen and Snowdon co-drove the Aurora to an overall Group victory in last month’s HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA and backed it up with the GT win and sixth-place overall Group C finish this weekend in the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour. The Group D battle was the most competitive of this year’s HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour with a different leader on top of the charts in each of the four segments. The leader up front when it counted was Wisko Racing Enterprises driver Nigel Greensall — who co-drove to a Classic Sebring 12 Hour Group A win last year in a 1966 No. 96 McLaren M1b — and his 2018 co-driver Gary Ball. After a trio of Porsche GT3 Cup entries split the first three segment wins, Greensall made up a more than 30-second deficit in Round 4 to steal the Group D victory by a scant 1.743 seconds in the No. 67 Radical SR3.Second-place went to Round 1 winner Shaun McKaigue in his Pfaff Motorsports 2013 No. 34 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup while segment three winner Jim Bernier was third in his Alex Job Racing 2011 No. 152 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup.The podium trio all completed 70 laps, as did Round 2 winner and fourth-place finisher Robert Ames in his Boulder Classics 2004 No. 99 Porsche 996 GT3 Cup.Next up for HSR is 2019’s season-opening event that brings the series back to Sebring International Raceway, March 28-31, for the new HSR Spring Fling Weekend.

First winners crowned at Classic Sebring 12H

sharetweetemail
By: HSR November 29, 2018 10:03 PM The Historic Sportscar Racing Classic Sebring 12 Hour, Pistons and Props, officially began Thursday with the first three races of the season-ending HSR Sebring Historics kicking off a full four-day schedule of on-track action at Sebring International Raceway. In addition to the third annual HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour, the Sebring weekend also drops the curtain on HSR’s season-long 2018 WeatherTech Sprint, B.R.M. Chronographes Enduro Challenge and Sasco Sports International/American Challenge racing series. The one-hour B.R.M. Vintage and GT Classic Enduro and season-ending sprints for the HSR Global GT and Sasco Sports series were run in quick succession Thursday afternoon, setting the tone for a competitive weekend of racing ahead at Sebring.Teaming up with race and championship-winning pro driver Leh Keen, Todd Treffert scored his second-straight Sebring B.R.M. Enduro overall and GT Classic win in his Speedconcepts 1974 No. 141 Porsche 911 IROC. Treffert solo drove to the overall and GTC win in last year’s B.R.M. Enduro finale at Sebring but was more than happy to share the top step of the podium this year with Keen.“I have known Todd for a while and always wanted to drive his IROC Porsche,” Keen said. “I am here to race in the Classic 12 Hour with Les Long but asked if I could also co-drive with Todd today and everybody said OK. I ran in the first Classic Daytona 24 a few years ago but haven’t been at an HSR race since. It’s a lot of fun and I am looking forward to a great weekend.”Keen brought the No. 141 to the checkered flag ahead of the Vintage-class-winning KMW Motorsports 1970 No. 88 Porsche 914/6 of Jamie Busby that finished an impressive second overall.Third overall and second in GTC went to David Agretelis in the JWE Motorsports 1978 No. 92 Porsche 911 SC while Damon DeSantis and David Hinton co-drove the Heritage Motorsports 1974 No. 301 Porsche 911 RSR to third in GTC and fourth overall.Busby was joined on the Vintage podium by Jonathan Ziegelman and his father Alan Ziegelman who co-drove to runner-up honors in their KMW Motorsports 1970 No. 5 Porsche 914/6. Third went to John Deford who completed a perfect Vintage-class sweep for 1970 Porsche 914/6 cars in his No. 57 entry prepared by the 901 Shop.he HSR Global GT finale was won by Stuart Fain in his recently acquired Autometrics 2010 No. 990 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup. Fain came home a winner in just his second start – and first in HSR – in the patriotically-themed red, white and blue Porsche that was raced in its prime by Wright Motorsports.Chris Ruppel was second in Global GT in the 2010 No. 119 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup from Zotz Racing while Jason Krikorian scored the third-place showing in the Hairy Dog Grrrage 2009 No. 036 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup.The season-ending Sasco Sports International/American Challenge race was won overall by Dennis Olthoff who also took American-class honors in a 1970 No. 19 Mustang Boss 302 prepared by his own Olthoff Racing team.Olthoff shared the overall podium with International-division winner Larry Ligas who challenged for the lead in the early stages of the race in his Predator Performance 1961 No. 61 Jaguar XKE. Gary Moore was third overall and second in the American field in his Cobra Automotive 1966 No. 98 Shelby GT350.Scooter Gabel won the Porsche division in the 1974 No. 159 Porsche 911 RSR and joined team owner and second-place finisher Carlos de Quesada in a one-two sweep of the class by Alegra Motorsports. The duo also did well to complete the overall top five, with de Quesada crossing the line in his 1973 No. 22 Porsche 911 just behind fourth-place Gabel.Adam Lindemann rounded out a Mustang-sweep of the American class with a third-place showing in his 1966 No. 704 Shelby GT350. Alan Benjamin in turn completed the Porsche-class podium with a third-place finish in the Boulder Classics 1975 No. 61 Porsche 911 RSR.Backing up his Sasco Sports International class win at Daytona earlier this month, Robert Albino made it to the podium again at Sebring in his Hudson Historics 1999 No. 99 BMW Z3 Coupe. Albino finished second to Ligas on Thursday and they were joined on the International podium by Hervey Parke who was third in his 1965 No. 11 Ginetta G4.The Classic Sebring 12 Hour, Pistons and Props, features HSR historic and vintage sports car racing and a full “fly-in” and display of equally iconic military and civilian aircraft from the last half century and beyond.

Night racing marks halfway point for HSR Classic Sebring 12

239 sharessharetweetemail
By: HSR December 2, 2018 11:18 AM The third annual Historic Sportscar Racing Classic Sebring 12 Hour hit the halfway mark soon after nightfall Saturday at Sebring International Raceway, where four Run Groups of vintage and historic sports cars will keep the close competition going until just before midnight. With all four Run Groups having completed their first two rounds, no runaway leaders have emerged and the racing action across the board has been close and competitive.Group A turned into an all McClendon International Lola battle with the 1969 No. 77 Lola T70 of Toni Seiler and the 1969 No. 127 Lola T165 of Mauro Casedei and Andy Feigenwinter splitting the first two segment victories. After winning the race-opening round, Seiler trailed the No. 127 to the finish line in the second segment but still maintained a 39-second overall lead on the field at the halfway mark. The only other Group A contender on the lead lap with the Lolas is the British-based 1965 No. 66 Ford GT40 of Karsten LeBlanc and Christopher Milner. The top-three has each completed a total of 34 laps in the first two race segments.Group B has seen the Phil Reilly Co. 1974 No. 29 Chevron B26 of Gray Gregory and Randy Buck move to the front after the opening rounds, but several quick GT entries have kept in close touch with the leader.Gregory initially battled with segment one winners John Harrold, Ryan Harrold and Kevin Wheeler who saw their chances of a third straight HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour win in the Team Mean/KMW Motorsports No. 94 Chevron take a serious hit in Round 2.Ryan Harrold was at the wheel and leading in the No. 94 when the battery cable on the Chevron disconnected from the starter. The Chevron was quickly taken to the paddock for repairs but has fallen a full nine laps behind Gregory and out of winning contention. The No. 94 team’s disappointment is a double blow as the Harrolds and Wheeler were looking for a record-extending fifth straight “HSR Classics” victory. In addition to taking the Group B win at Sebring the last two years, the No. 94 team has won at the last two HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA races, including last month’s fourth running of the classic 24-hour race at Daytona International Speedway and the 2017 edition.Gregory’s biggest challenger is now the ultra-quick 1982 No. 21 Chevy Camaro IROC of Swiss driver Alain Ruede, the only other Group B competitor to match the No. 26 Chevron’s two-round total of 34 laps completed. For the second consecutive year, John Reisman swept both opening segments in Group C in his Hudson Historics-prepared 2010 No. 33 Coyote Corvette Daytona Prototype to edge a tight prototype field.Reisman, the second-place GMT Racing 2005 No. 2 Audi R8 LMP of Travis Engen and third-place duo of Tommy Dreelan and Aaron Scott in the Celtic Speed 2009 No. 68 ORECA FLM09 Prototype Challenge car have all completed 30 laps at the halfway point.Typically the fastest cars on the track, Group C totaled only the 30 laps at mid-race after the opening segment was delayed just after the start for more than 20 minutes. The 2014 Heritage Motorsports No. 50 Riley Daytona Prototype of Frank Beck caught fire halfway through Round 1’s opening race lap. Beck escaped uninjured, but the blaze heavily damaged the rear section of the No. 50 and required the lengthy track clean-up.Home to more modern GT and sports cars, Group D has seen several Porsche GT3 Cup cars step up to set the pace. Shaun McKaigue won the opening segment in his Pfaff Motorsports 2013 No. 34 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup but a Round 2 win by Robert Ames in the Boulder Classics 2004 No. 99 Porsche 996 GT3 Cup was just enough to give him a 16-second lead on the field at halfway.Classic Sebring 12 Hour Rounds 3 for all four Groups fill out Saturday night’s schedule that runs from 8 p.m. to just before midnight. The schedule picks up again Sunday at 11 a.m. ET when the fourth and final segments for all Groups will be held in succession to bring the 2017 Classic Sebring 12 Hour at Sebring, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network, to a conclusion.

Engen returns to Sebring Classic 25 victory lane with overall B.R.M. Enduro Challenge win

By: HSR | December 1, 2018 4:32 AM Travis Engen drove his GMT Racing-prepared 2005 No. 2 Audi R8 LMP to an overall B.R.M. Chronographes Enduro victory while Alegra Motorsports Porsche 911 teammates Scooter Gabel and Carlos de Quesada scored a top-two podium sweep for the second straight day Friday in Historic Sportscar Racing competition at Sebring International Raceway. Both the B.R.M. Enduro, which included Prototype, Historic and GT Modern classes, and Friday’s HSR Classic RS Cup sprint were part of this weekend’s HSR Sebring Historics schedule. The season-ending event for the year-long HSR championships, the HSR Sebring Historics shares the weekend card with the third annual HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network. While Classic Sebring 12 Hour competitors qualified Friday, the day’s racing excitement came in the Sebring Historics events. Engen soloed to the overall and Prototype-class victory and shared the podium with runners-up Mirco Schultis and co-driver Eric Filgueiras and third-place finisher William Hubbell.Driving the Starworks-prepared 2009 No. 9 ORECA FLM09, Schultis and Filgueiras were the only competitors to finish on the lead lap with Engen. Hubbell finished one lap behind the top-two in a solo drive in his Hudson Historics 2009 No. 230 Corvette Daytona Prototype.Second-place GTM-class finisher Greg Griffin also maintained a quick pace, taking the checkered flag not far behind Lasco and fifth overall in his SpeedWorks 2013 No. 71 Ferrari F458.Third in GTM, and a solid sixth overall, went to Shaun McKaigue in his 2013 No. 34 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup.The B.R.M Enduro Historic division was won by Predator Performance co-drivers Ken McKinnon and Mike Bruns in the 1972 No. 01 Porsche 911 RSR.Thomas Kirk finished second in the Historic class in his Zotz Racing 1995 No. 114 Porsche 993 while third went to Nigel Greensall — who co-drove to a Classic Sebring 12 Hour Group A win last year in a 1966 No. 96 McLaren M1b — and his Wisko Racing Enterprises co-driver Gary Ball. The season-ending HSR Classic RS Cup race kicked off Friday’s racing schedule and saw Alegra teammates Gabel and de Quesada promptly pick up right where they left off in Thursday’s Sasco Sports International/American Challenge sprint.Gabel and de Quesada swept the top two finishing positions in the Porsche class in the Sasco Sports race and pulled off a perfect repeat performance Friday in the Classic RS Cup eight-lap sprint. Gabel took the lead in the 1974 No. 159 Porsche 911 RSR at the start and led every lap to the finish for his second-straight victory this week at the HSR Sebring Historics.Team owner de Quesada in turn scored runner-up honors for the second-straight day in his 1973 No. 22 Porsche 911. The Alegra duo was joined in victory lane by David Agretelis, who completed the podium in his JWE Motorsports 1978 No. 92 Porsche 911 SC.Agretelis pulled off a repeat podium performance of his own with Friday’s Classic RS Cup third-place finish following Thursday’s third-place overall showing — and second in the GT Classic class — in the one-hour B.R.M. Vintage and GTC Enduro.
