By: Kelly Crandall | November 20, 2018 10:22 AM How wrong the biggest story of the season ended up being. All year, so much fuss had been made about the performances of Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. that a nickname was created: Big 3. The moniker was used in written stories, on the radio, and even referenced during at-track press conferences. Homestead-Miami Speedway and the championship race was going to be all about them: a crowning moment for one after a dominant year. But everyone was wrong. Lacking the same fat win column and resultant fanfare as Busch, Harvick, and Truex, Joey Logano was never given the respect or attention he deserved.Wins aside, Logano was always there in the shadow of the Big 3 in all other categories. Those numbers have been covered extensively here and here in recent weeks, especially when it came to how Logano was outperforming all others in the playoffs.“I felt so confident going into this week that we were the car to beat,” Logano said. “I felt like after winning Martinsville, it put us in the spot to really focus in on this race, and we did. We built a great race car that was able to be good on the short runs. It wasn’t a long‑run race car, but a 20‑lap car, it was that for sure.“My race team; I wasn’t worried about them at all, and I knew I just had to do my job, and everyone was going to do their job, and everything was going to be fine. Either way, everything was going to be fine. But I felt confident and relaxed that today was going to be a good day.”

Last Sunday night at Homestead wasn’t a surprise, nor an accident, nor a stroke of dumb luck. Logano knew, even if everyone else didn’t or wouldn’t admit it, that his No. 22 team was good enough to be in the title race and would be well-prepared for battle.Did he have the best car last weekend? Maybe, depending on who you ask. Logano qualified fifth and swept both Saturday practice sessions. He also led the most laps (80) in the Ford EcoBoost 400.“I told my interior guy Daniel Lynch when I got in the car, I said, ‘I’m getting in as a driver and getting out as a champion,’ and we were able to do that, so what a great feeling,” said Logano. “I was just pumped up, man. I was pretty jacked up.” The fourth-best driver all year – that was Logano. It wasn’t the Big 3 and everyone else. It was the Big 4 all along.Being fourth-best is no slight either, because it can get a driver to the title race. And once there, it’s game on. Logano mastered the final game of the season and beat Busch, Harvick and Truex when it counted. So, the numbers should say Logano had a top four year, but to some, he was either overlooked, underestimated or simply the underdog. However Logano is no fluke champion. He simply knew when he could go from being fourth-best to the best.“Honestly, my wife can probably vouch for this ‑‑ 20 weeks ago, I thought, ‘man, if we get to the Round of Eight, that’s pretty good this year for where we were at the time’,” Logano said of when his mindset changed toward the title. “We were consistent, that’s what kept us up in the point all year long. We didn’t have many bad races throughout the season. But I guess just as the playoffs went, everyone rose to the occasion. Everyone picked it up.“We talk about it at playoff media day; you always talk about how you have to find another little bit inside of you to just maintain [your level] when the playoffs start because everyone is able to get a little bit better. Then as we do that, we started running better, and we were running top five and winning stages, so okay, we’re in a decent spot here.“I don’t think anyone scored more points than us throughout the playoffs. It goes to show that we executed under pressure, not just today or the last five races, but the last 10, really, is when I felt like we’ve got a shot at this thing, and probably the last seven or so was when I felt like we had a great shot.”

Logano wins first Cup Series championship

By: A.J. Perez, USA Today Sports | November 18, 2018 4:06 PM Joey Logano bumped his way into the finals. The 28-year-old Team Penske driver’s run to his first career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship was clean, although no less dramatic.Logano didn’t need to nudge defending series champion Martin Truex Jr. like he did to earn a spot among the Championship 4 last month. Logano just sped past Truex with 11 laps left in Sunday’s Ford EcoBoost 400 to claim both the race win and the championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Results | Standings“It’s an amazing night,” Logano said. “I know what second felt like, and I know how much it stinks. I didn’t know what winning felt like, but it feels really, really good.” Logano finished second to seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson in 2016 after a fourth-place finish in the finale two years ago and, before Sunday, Logano hadn’t finished any higher at this 1.5-mile track in nine previous starts.Still, Logano declared himself the favorite after bumping Truex at Martinsville — even if he didn’t have a title like the other three Championship 4 drivers (Truex, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch). Those three also were each seeking a second Cup title.

“I said before we weren’t the underdog,” Logano said. “We proved it why we’re not. My team rose to the occasion and executed under pressure like nobody’s business. “I’ve worked my whole life to get here. We spent 10 seasons to get here. We are champions — NASCAR champions!”

The Championship 4 contenders were the class of the field at Homestead and finished 1-2-3-4. Truex held on for second; Harvick, the 2014 champion, came home third; and Busch, the 2015 champ, finished fourth.Busch, after a couple of missteps earlier in the race, rebounded on the final pit stop as the leaders came in when Daniel Suarez was spun out with 20 laps left. Busch had been holding out for a yellow because he was on a different pit strategy than the leaders.“I was optimistic about it but didn’t think it would be that short-lived,” Busch said. “I figured I could at least maybe lead three or four laps, but Martin got a good restart.”Truex raced for the final time with Furniture Row Racing, which announced in September it would cease operations at season’s end. Truex will drive the No. 19 Toyota next year and team with Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing. After he passed Busch on the final restart, it looked like Truex could send off the one-car Denver-based operation with another celebration before Logano made the pass with 11 laps left.“Just didn’t play out the way we needed it to,” Truex said. “I had nothing for him at the end. I needed 15, 20 more laps, and that’s just the way it goes. I’m not sure what else to say.”Brad Keselowski finished fifth, Matt Kenseth sixth, Chase Elliott seventh, Clint Bowyer eighth, Aric Almirola ninth and Kurt Busch 10th.The first caution of the weekend — not counting the yellow flags after stages — came on lap 139 for debris. Neither Friday’s Camping World Truck Series nor Saturday’s Xfinity Series races had “natural” cautions. The second came after Kyle Larson clipped the wall in Turn 4 with 75 laps left. Larson was third at the time and led the most laps (45) of any driver not in the Championship 4.Kyle Buch’s crew — one of the most dominant this season — had its second miscue of the race as the air gun got caught under the car during the caution for Larson. That cost Busch four spots. Earlier in the race, a tire changer dropped a lug nut.Harvick raced minus his crew chief Rodney Childers and car chief Robert Smith, who were suspended for the final two races of the season after NASCAR found Harvick’s No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford had an illegal spoiler after a victory at Texas Motor Speedway on Nov. 4.The race’s start was delayed a few minutes to clean up oil left on the track by Regan Smith’s Chevrolet during the pace laps. That came minutes after a skydiver towing a flag got caught on the catch fence near turn 1. The skydiver was not injured, according to a track spokesperson.
