Power's fresh approach pays off at Indy

By: Mark Glendenning May 27, 2018 3:37 PM Determination, a negativity filter and a few aggressive restarts combined to help take Will Power into Victory Lane at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday.Power survived a race-long threat from Ed Carpenter and a late-race battle with a trio of off-sequence cars to secure Team Penske’s 17th Indy 500 win. At the final restarted, he had the fuel-marginal Oriol Servia, Stefan Wilson and Jack Harvey ahead of him, with Scott Dixon and Carpenter just behind. Carpenter and Power were on identical fuel loads, and Power said that the race polesitter was his main concern.

“That last restart, I was very determined,” he said. “I knew that I had to get a run on these [off-sequence] guys, at least get one of them in the first turn – which I didn’t. I got Oriol a lap later or something. I didn’t want Carpenter to have a shot at me. He was very quick. If he had gotten by, I think it would have been game over, potentially.”

Once he got past Servia he had just three laps left to deal with Wilson and Harvey, but that problem took care of itself when both drivers swung into pitlane for a late splash of fuel, giving Power a clear run to the flag.“It was like the gates opened,” Power said. “It was amazing.”But beyond how the day played out on the track, Power believes that the seeds for the win were planted with a change in his outlook, partly with regard to how he processed the disappointment of narrowly losing the 2015 race to teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, and partly through a desire to be more positive in general.“There’s so much negative stuff out there you can see on social media,” he said. “You’ve just got to minimize the amount of negative people you hang around, negative stuff you read, and be in general more positive.“It ran through my head the last year more than ever, because I’ve won so many races and poles, led more laps than anyone… I just hadn’t done it here,” he said. “I’ve been thinking, ‘Am I going to finish my career without a 500 win?’“This month was one of the best months I’ve had: very relaxed, in tune with my engineer, just working really well. It just came together. You’ve got to have a lot of determination.“I watched the Super Bowl. It was the Patriots…what was the other team? [ED: The Eagles]. They had a lot more ‘want’. They wanted it more than the other team. That’s why they won. I think you have to have that. You have to have that in you. That’s just the human spirit. You got to have that determination. That’s what I had. You work hard at something, it comes to you. It eventually comes to you.“This was the last box to tick to be considered as a very successful driver. I’m not done. I’m not done. I still have plenty of time left to win more 500s and championships and races.”

Power closes the deal at Indy

Images by Marshall Pruett

By: Robin Miller May 29, 2018 10:39 PM It’s a long way from Toowomba to standing in Victory Lane at Indianapolis with Roger Penske but Will Power’s journey had more twists and turns than his beloved Bathhurst circuit. He went from an introverted kid with talent but little confidence to the fastest road racer in IndyCar who despised ovals to a veteran that finally started to enjoy his life in the fast lane.Yet after all his wins (34), pole positions (51) and laps led (3,627) during the past 13 years, Power produced the result that counted most on Sunday – for him, his owner, his sponsor and his career.

Power earns $2.52 million for Indianapolis 500 win

Podcast: Indy 500 winner Will Power

“We all know what Indy means to Roger and when you see all those Baby Borgs at the shop and all those pictures on the wall of the guys who have won, you know I’ve been looking at them quite a while,” said the 37-year-old Australian. “And now it’s going to be pretty cool to walk in and see myself up there.”Power admitted he never imagined having an open-wheel job in America, let alone winning the biggest race in the world.“I never dreamed of doing this and I never thought I’d be driving for Roger Penske,” admitted the 2014 IndyCar champion who joined Team Penske as a part-timer in 2009 and won in his fifth start. “I never thought I’d be a professional race driver but it’s all I ever wanted to do for as long as I can remember.”The first domino to fall to get Power to North America came in 2005 when Derrick Walker was looking for a driver for his Champ Car team.“We had the Team Australia concept and the first guy we had wasn’t cutting it. I’d heard about Will in GP2 so I called Trevor Carlin [his team manager in that series] and he didn’t have anything lined up for Will past that season,” recalled Walker.“So I flew him to Portland for a test and he was quick. Rob Edwards, my team manager at the time, agreed this kid had talent so we ran him at Surfers Paradise and Mexico City and signed him up for 2006.”

Winless in ’06, Power scored two wins in 2007 before Champ Car merged with the Indy Racing League in 2008. Walker’s team disbanded so Willy P. went with KV Racing and won Long Beach but really struggled on the ovals and despised Indianapolis.“I remember listening to him complain on the scanner in 2008 and I didn’t like him much because he hated this place,” said Ed Carpenter, who battled Power last Sunday and finished second after leading the most laps from his pole position. “Somewhere along the line we became friends and kind of bonded since I’m an oval guy and he likes to think of himself as an oval guy.“I know how hard he worked to figure out how to be better on ovals because he flat out didn’t like them at first. He turned his weakness into a strength and he’ll make a great champion.” Power’s weakness at turning left cost him a couple of championships but acknowledges it’s a different ball game today.“I feel like every time we go to an oval I have a chance to win and that definitely wasn’t the feeling in the beginning of my career,” he continued. “I would always think it’s going to suck and I never thought I could win. “I would race ovals every week now because I’m so experienced at it and I enjoy it – and I’ve become good at it.”Walker, who suggested to Penske that he hire Power after Team Australia folded and also touted engineer David Faustino to The Captain, proudly watched his protégé from the IMS suites.“I knew he could do it – it was only a matter of time,” said Walker, who also gave Power’s crew chief Jon Bouslog his first job. “It’s refreshing because Will is such a natural, genuine guy and racing is the love of his life.“He’s a little bit more complicated than some but his natural pace and focus is second to none. And winning Indy has released all that pressure.”
Power lets his emotions show in Victory Lane. (Image by Michael Levitt/LAT)
Nobody in IndyCar is probably more misunderstood than Power. He’s a good guy with a wry sense of humor that comes off as boorish and gets criticized for his lack of emotion. But it’s been a long time since any winner showed more emotion than Power last Sunday and it was genuine.“I’m not supposed to eat dairy but I didn’t care, I was drinking the milk,” he exclaimed after accidentally dousing the 500 Festival Queen. “I’ve never been so excited and I was just screaming that whole last lap because I knew I’d finally done it.” W.P. admits his attitude adjustment coincides with fatherhood.“I use to be a negative guy but being positive is so much better,” said the father of Beau whose wife, Liz, was his PR rep with Walker. “And I’ve got a great family and lot to be positive about. Especially after today.”Power’s timing was impeccable. With Verizon set to bow out as IndyCar’s title sponsor, his triumph may convince them to stick around as his sponsor for a few more years. He also completed Chevrolet’s impressive month with a convenient victory headed to Detroit. But with teammates Josef Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud capturing the past two championships, his 2018 season off to a rocky start and rumors that The Captain is looking at Robert Wickens or Alexander Rossi, Willy P. likely needed this win for job security. “Definitely good for that,” he said with a grin. “Surely they’re going to have me back.”

Jonsson celebrated as key cog in Team Penske's success

By: Marshall Pruett May 30, 2018 4:43 PM Among IndyCar’s brotherhood and sisterhood of pit crew members, Team Penske’s Matt Jonsson holds a special place of distinction. Nearing his 25th anniversary with Team Penske, the Swede has come to define excellence as a mechanic and crew chief. From within the close-knit community that puts on the IndyCar show, Jonsson is viewed as a leader — the standard for consistency, temperament, and professionalism. It made his latest Indy 500 win, captured on Sunday with Will Power, a celebratory moment for a number of fellow mechanics and crew chiefs in the Verizon IndyCar Series who cite Jonsson as an inspiration and role model.Power’s emotional victory made the headlines, as did Penske’s 17th triumph as a team owner at the Indy 500, but behind the scenes, Jonsson’s friends and rivals were fast to honor the man whose work they admire most.

“I feel like Swede is the Scott Dixon of mechanics,” former Team Penske chief mechanic Billy Vincent, who trained under Jonsson, told RACER. “Through all these different types of cars and series, he always finds his way to the front, quietly.”Vincent’s admiration for Jonsson typified the sentiments shared by others in the paddock. Having moved on from Penske to work for Porsche and Andretti Autosport before joining Schmidt Peterson Motorsports as James Hinchcliffe’s chief mechanic, Vincent is grateful for the lessons Jonsson provided while learning his trade.
Matt Jonsson (far right) stands out as one of the most admired mechanics and crew chiefs in IndyCar (Image by Marshall Pruett).
“He’s a great teacher and organizer,” he continued. “Swede creates a great environment for people to learn from. No matter what group of guys he’s got with different strengths or weaknesses, he always finds that right balance to make the group as a whole as strong as possible.”Even as friendly rivals working for different teams, Vincent continues to use Jonsson as his personal set of checks and balances. It’s an honest admission most competitors would not make, and stands as a measure of immense respect.“People talk a lot about Penske setting the bar high. That’s for sure true. Swede sets the bar for mechanics,” he said. “I think people would be lying to you if they said they don’t always have an eye on him to make sure they are doing the right thing. I know I did while working with him. And to be honest, I still do from afar.”Power’s veteran race engineer David Faustino also heaped praise on his rock-steady crew chief.“You know, Matt is extremely focused. I think just like a racecar driver gets focused to do his job, Matt, he almost operates the same exact way, but as a crew chief. That’s my take on it, and he’s extremely, extremely detail oriented, makes lists for everything. I’ll forget things, and he’ll remind me. He’s always making sure that he doesn’t drop the ball on anything. That’s how sharp he is,” he said.Like Vincent, and like Travis Law, chief mechanic on Josef Newgarden’s championship-winning No. 1 Team Penske Chevy, Faustino credits Jonsson’s ability to groom young talent and produce elite crew members.“The other amazing thing about Matt is his ability to bring up these young kids we get straight out of UTI (Universal Technical Institute), right from school, and he brings them up the right way. If you look at our current crew chiefs, a lot of them have been mentored by Matt. Travis Law was on the 12 car and other cars before going to Josef’s car. He was mentored by Matt. Some of our best mechanics and crew chiefs right now all sort of came through his training, if you will, and his program,” he continued.“He doesn’t necessarily buddy-buddy with the guys like maybe some of the other crew chiefs or hang out, but he works in a positive way with them. He teaches them the right way, teaches them how to do things right, and he’s always very respectful. And I think that’s why more of the crew chiefs that have come through and modeled themselves after him have become successful.”Never one to accept the spotlight, Jonsson pointed to the team and their collective efforts — including five rocket-fast pit stops — for Power’s Indy 500 result.“I really can’t take any credit for this at all myself,” he said. “It is the crew. It is the whole shop as a unit. We work together really well. We’ve got some really talented people back at the shop putting these things together, and we travel with them and do the same thing. I’ve got a very small part in this.”Jonsson knows the feeling of winning the Indy 500, having reached the sport’s pinnacle with Penske drivers Gil de Ferran in 2003 and Sam Hornish in 2006. With Power as the chaperone for his third Speedway victory, Jonsson found extra joy in all it has meant for the Australian.“To put it in perspective, I’ve been with Penske now for 23 years, and with Will, I’ve been with him for the longest of any driver as chief,” he said. “This is the sixth year with him, and I’m so happy for Will, [his wife] Liz, Mr. and Mrs. Penske and honestly, those are the people I’m most happy for. And it’s for Will because he has won almost everything except for this race.”
Jonsson (front right) and Team Penske celebrate Will Power’s Indy 500 win.
Considering all of the wins and championships Jonsson’s amassed at Team Penske, it’s refreshing to learn how much the latest Indy 500 win means to someone who left home long ago to start a new life in a different land.“The reason I came to America — and it’s the best country in the world, there’s no doubt about that — is this country gives opportunity to anybody, and that’s what I love about this country,” he said with a smile. “Everybody starts on equal ground, and it doesn’t matter who you are when you start out. Hard work and the harder you try, the further you can make it, and I think again, by some luck, and obviously some fortune in some way ended up at the right place with Team Penske.“That thought will never go away that you came to a new country for a reason. For me, the reason was racing, and to come over here and — at the time when I showed up over here, it was certainly to make it to Penske was one of my goals, although I started with Bettenhausen, and I don’t want to take anything away from that. Tony was a great friend and just wound up here doing this, and now I’ve [won Indy] with three different drivers. Standing in Victory Lane with RP, it means a lot.”
