Default Acura taps Comptech history for 2019 ARX-05 DPi liveries

Acura taps Comptech history for 2019 ARX-05 DPi liveries

351 sharessharetweetemail
By: Marshall Pruett | January 10, 2019 12:53 PM Acura Team Penske will pay tribute to the championship-winning Comptech Racing IMSA prototypes from the early 1990s throughout the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season with throwback white and orange liveries. The unmistakable dayglo orange, featured on the factory IMSA GTP-Light entries from California’s Comptech, helped the Acura NSX-powered prototypes built by Spice to stand out from its rivals as the team and brand dominated its class from 1991-1993.
“This is a natural look for Acura prototypes, and a salute to our heritage as a performance brand,” said Acura executive creative director Dave Marek, who brought the liveries forward to its ARX-05 DPis. “The Acura brand was founded in 1986, and its debut in motorsports soon followed.“Today, we’re proud to unveil a livery that accurately reflects our long, successful history in North American racing – and look forward to adding new chapters to the story of Acura Precision Crafted Performance.”In addition to Acura’s GTP-Lights and DPi, the white and dayglo orange theme was also carried on Comptech’s initial Honda-powered CART IndyCar program, and got its start in the 1980s within IMSA’s International Sedan series — a forerunner to today’s Michelin Pilot Challenge championship. More recently, the RealTime Acura team employed the livery on an Acura NSX GT3 fielded in the former Pirelli World Challenge series.

Default Rossi earns rave reviews from Acura

Rossi earns rave reviews from Acura

By: Marshall Pruett | January 11, 2019 6:17 AM Alexander Rossi’s first outings in the world of sports car racing had little in common with the bold and daring moves fans have become accustomed to from him in the IndyCar Series.Unrewarding trips to Le Mans in 2013 in an LMP2 entry (pictured below), and once more at the 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona with the DeltaWing team, gave very few indicators of what would be delivered as the newest member of the Acura Team Penske IMSA program. Partnered with sports car champion Ricky Taylor and three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves in the No. 7 Acura ARX-05 DPi, the front-running IndyCar star has made quite an impression on the team and the manufacturer in a short amount of time.

Rossi’s rapid adaptation to the twin-turbo V6-powered prototype has, in Taylor’s estimation, shown how far the Californian has come in his efforts to master machines other than his Andretti Autosport open-wheel car.“Alex and I raced together one time at Skip Barber 2006,” he told RACER. “Then, obviously, I went and followed him through his time in Europe and then in IndyCar, and I knew he was fast. I knew that he’d gained a lot of confidence and he was really coming into his own as one of the top two or three IndyCar drivers. And when I heard he was gonna drive for the team, it was really exciting. I knew he’d do a good job.”

Taylor was impressed by how well prepared his new teammate was for the endurance racing opportunity he was given by Acura and Penske. Coming on the heels of his recent first-time participation at the Baja 1000, Rossi is building a reputation as an all-rounder who can handle anything he’s asked to drive.

“Whenever you see a driver come into sports car racing from driving something else, you always think, ‘That’s going to be different,’ he noted. “As competitive as IndyCar is, and with all the other formula car drivers that come to IMSA, you expect a little bit of a learning curve when they come hop into the sports car. New buttons, new dash, new everything. It isn’t natural for some of them.“He was shocking from every aspect,” Taylor added. “Right out of the box, he was super fast, giving feedback and developing the car in the first time that he was sitting in it. Also, just the amount of homework that he did. Probably the biggest thing is, it took Helio and I a year to learn that steering wheel, dash, and everything. He’d learned it before he even got to the track.“That was all really exciting for me — to see how much effort he’d put in, how seriously he’s taking it. Obviously, it’s not his primary ride for the year. That’s his Andretti Honda Indy car. To see that he’s taking it seriously in the Acura ARX-05 he’ll race only a few times this year, it’s exciting for us.”

Rossi replaces fellow IndyCar driver Graham Rahal, who bowed out from the endurance driver role after struggling to fit his 6-foot-3-inch frame in the cockpit. Despite his general lack of experience in a series like IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Honda Performance Development VP Steve Eriksen says Rossi has turned out to be the perfect choice to fill Rahal’s void.“Graham did a fantastic job,” he remarked. “You look at that last race of 2018 (Petit Le Mans) and he just was on fire, and doing a bang-up job and doing four stints or whatever. It just was incredible — but he just was not physically comfortable in the car and so he made the extraordinary decision to say, ‘This is where I’ve got to bow out, because I just don’t fit in the car.’ We were left with figuring out what to do, and we picked Rossi.“The feedback that I’ve gotten from the team is that Alex really impressed everybody. He really fit it. It’s been such a seamless fit too, personality-wise and even setup-wise. His setup is different than what was already in place, so that also fit in well. He’s just been a great addition to the package and the team. I’m looking forward to seeing that group of drivers having a fun time at the Rolex 24.”

Ford unveils historic Rolex 24 GT liveries

340 sharessharetweetemail
By: Marshall Pruett January 10, 2019 8:57 AM Ford Performance and Chip Ganassi Racing will reach back to IMSA’s fabled 1980s era with the No. 66 GT, and pay homage to sponsor Castrol with the No. 67 GT for the upcoming Rolex 24 At Daytona.“We’re excited to show off our Ford GTs in a new way, and at the same time join IMSA in celebrating its 50th anniversary,” said Ford Performance Motorsports global director Mark Rushbrook. The one-off liveries are a first for Ford since its GT endurance racing program launched in 2016.“I’m really excited and proud that Ford is doing something to celebrate the 50th anniversary of IMSA,” said FCGR driver Richard Westbrook, who pilots the No. 67 with Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon. “Ford and Castrol had a lot of successful history in those years, so for the two to come together and do something as eye-catching as these new liveries, I’m going to be really proud driving that car.
“I’ve seen enough footage of cars in that livery going around Daytona before the bus stop chicane was put in, which was a very iconic period of IMSA racing, so to be in an iconic car in that livery trying to defend our title will be something really special.”

Wayne Taylor Racing wins rain-shortened Rolex 24

35 sharessharetweetemail
By: J.J. O'Malley 25 minutes ago Wayne Taylor Racing’s No. 10 Konica Minolta DPi Cadillac driven by Jordan Taylor, Renger van der Zande, Kamui Kobayashi and Fernando Alonso won the 57th running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona when IMSA deemed the event official after 23 hours and 50 minutes of racing, calling the race after extensive rainfall caused some of the most extreme weather conditions ever seen at Daytona International Speedway.Fernando Alonso becomes the third F1 champion to win an endurance race at Daytona, joining Mario Andretti and Phil Hill, whose win in 1964 came in the 2,000-kilometer Daytona Continental road race.

For the first time in history, the race was red flagged twice due to wet conditions, first for an hour, 45 minutes on Sunday morning and a second and final time at 12:39 p.m. ET.Finishing second in DPi was the No. 31 Whelen Engineering DPi-V.R driven by Felipe Nasr, Eric Curran and Pipo Derani, and the No. 7 Team Penske Acura took third, driven by Alexander Rossi, Ricky Taylor and Helio Castroneves. The No. 18 DragonSpeed ORECA, which Sebastian Saavedra had crashed with minutes to go before the red flag flew, took the LMP2 class win with Saavedra, Roberto Gonzalez and Pastor Maldonado. In driving rain, Saavedra’s crash badly damaged the car, but the team had an insurmountable four-lap gap.In GTLM, Augusto Farfus took the lead one lap before the final caution to earn an emotional win in GTLM in the No. 25 Team RLL BMW M8 GTE co-driven by Connor De Phillippi, Philipp Eng and Colton Herta. The victory comes days after the sudden death of Karl ‘Charly’ Lamm, the longtime leader of BMW Team Schnitzer.

The GTD class win went to Rolf Ineichen, Mirko Bortolotti, Christian Engelhart and Rik Breukers in the No. 11 GRT Grasser Racing Team Lamborghini Huracan GT3 for the second straight Rolex 24.This story will be updated.

Rolex 24 Hour 22: Alonso gets lead back before red flag

159 sharessharetweetemail
By: J.J. O'Malley 2 hours ago The 57th Rolex 24 at Daytona is back under a red flag with two hours remaining…and two-time F1 world champion sitting in the overall lead in Wayne Taylor Racing’s No. 10 Cadillac.Racing went green at the beginning of the 22nd hour, with leader Jordan Taylor in the No. 10 under heavy pressure by Felipe Nasr in the No. 31 Cadillac. Prior to the preceding caution, Nasr went around the No. 7 Acura Team Penske DPi. Taylor was able to hold off Nasr’s first two attacks — with slight side-by-side contact — before Nasr took the position with a move to the inside of Taylor exiting Turn 6 and entering the banking. Meanwhile, GTLM leader James Calado in the No. 62 Ferrari was under heavy pressure from Augusto Farfus in the No. 25 BMW.Taylor pitted at 21:06, turning the car over to Alonso, who lost a position on the stop and fell to third behind Nasr and Rossi. The 15th caution then came out at 21:08 when Milos Pavlovic went off in the No. 47 PPM Lamborghini, knocking a sponsor sign onto the track.Drama continued under caution as Henrik Hedman pulled off in the No. 81 DragonSpeed ORECA which has dominated the LMP2 category. He was on his out lap, and had lost a wheel. The incident gave the lead to teammate Sebastian Saavedra in the No. 18, which now leads its team car by two laps. The restart at 21:26 was followed by the 16th yellow waving only two minutes later. Toni Vilander — fourth in GTD – demonstrated the risks of the severely limited visibility by slamming into the back of No. 540 Black Swan Porsche of Dirk Werner entering the chicane. Both cars were eliminated.

It was back to green at 21:38, with rain starting to intensify and the No. 31 Cadillac of Nasr leading the No. 10 of Alonso.

Joao Barbosa spun in the lapped No. 5 Cadillac, with the fourth-place No. 54 Nissan DPi of Loic Duval spinning and barely missing Barbosa. In GTD, Daniel Morad took the lead in the No. 29 Montaplast by Land Motorsports Audi with a pass of Matt Campbell in the No. 73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche.

Nasr went straight off in Turn 1 at 21:54, turning the lead over to Alonso. Four minutes later, Sebastian Saavadra had heavy front-end contact in the No. 81 DragonSpeed ORECA. Cameron Cassels was second, but running four laps down in the No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports entry. That brought out the yellow at 21:58, with Richard Westbrook pitting the GTLM-leading No. 67 Ford for fuel. Then, the decision was made to bring out a second red flag at the 22:04 mark.Alonso – who was actively campaigning for the race to be stopped — leads the No. 31 Nasr and No. 7 of Rossi overall; the crippled No. 18 of Saavedra leads No. 38 Cassels in LMP2; No. 25 BMW of Augusto Farfus leads GTLM; and Christian Engelhart led GTD in the No. GRT Graser Lamborghini. Although the rain appears to have settled in for the duration, IMSA has informed the teams that it still aims to restart.

Rolex 24 Hour 21: Back to green, and chaos

233 sharessharetweetemail

By: J.J. O'Malley 4 hours ago Green flag racing returned at the 20-hour, 11-minute mark after an extended caution, but didn’t last long as steady rain continues to fall at the Rolex 24.The top two cars in GTLM were involved in a multi-car incident in Turn 1. Joey Hand was leading in the No. 66 Ford GT, and spun after contact with the No. 911 Porsche of Frederic Makowiecki, who also spun.“I got totally smoked from behind by a Porsche,” said Hand, who returned after losing nine laps. “Then I hit another car… and another car… and another car.”StandingsAmong the other cars that went off were the fourth-place DPi of Romain Dumas in the No. 54 CORE Nissan, the No. 63 Ferrari of Dominik Farnbacher, third in GTD. The No. 11 Grasser Lamborghini of Mirko Bortolotti was running second in GTD, and was tagged twice from behind.Race leader Jordan Taylor had a close call when Spencer Pumpelly spun the No. 44 Magnus Lamborghini directly in front of him in Turn 1. Taylor took evasive action after barely avoiding the Lambo.Pipo Derani entered the hour with the lead and managed to hold off the lapped No. 5 Cadillac of Christian Fittipaldi and Taylor. Derani then pitted after an extended stint, with Taylor going to the lead, followed by Alexander Rossi in the No. 7 Acura.Caution returned at 20:24, when Marco Seefried went off and got stuck in the grass while running second in GTD in the No. 540 Black Swan Porsche. The race went back to green at 20:44. Kris Wright got turned around facing traffic in the International Horseshoe shortly after the restart. Jack Hawksworth took evasive action in the No. 14 Lexus, but lost seven places after running third in GTD.There was a lead change in GTD as A.J. Allmendinger pitted and turned the No. 86 Meyer Shank Acura over to Trent Hindman. The promoted Jeff Segal to the lead in the No. 12 Lexus. Some very brave men and women who make their living driving brutally fast sports cars questioned the safety and sanity of IMSA’s decision to continue racing in treacherous conditions.Heavy and persistent rain made aquaplaning an inescapable reality. Racing in the wake of one or more cars was a blinding experience at times. With the entire field running on rain tires, frequent spins and crashes suggested chance, rather than talent, was in charge during longer segments of racing prior to the final red flag.

The tipping point appeared to come when Fernando Alonso witnessed IMSA’s pace car driver nearly crash while controlling the field under yellow. It further emboldened his belief the threshold to stop the race had been met prior to the event-ending red.“I went to talk to him because he nearly crashed after the bus stop,” said the Spaniard, who was leading at the time and won the race with the Wayne Taylor Racing team. “I was following him and he had a massive moment aquaplaning and the safety car was pointing to the wall at one point. And then he recovered the car. Immediately after he called red flag, I think he was a little bit scared in that moment.”Asked if he would have made the same pleas for the race to be stopped if he was running second — sealing the win for Action Express Racing — his tone was sharp and direct.“Exactly the same,” he continued. “I called a lot of times when I was second, over the radio, that [the] safety car was necessary. I think the last five, seven laps of the race, were not, I think, right. For anyone …because the visibility was nearly zero, we could not be flat out on the straights. The car was moving, the [traction control] was coming in 6th gear, [at] 200 miles per hour. There were parts of different cars in different points of the track because people were losing the bodywork here and there. And I was calling the team for a safety car immediately because I could not see anything.“And then [AXR’s] Felipe [Nasr] went a little bit long into Turn 1, we took the lead and we were just lucky today. But, I think conditions were also okay to stop the race seven laps before they did and in that moment we were second.”Ford Chip Ganassi Racing’s Richard Westbrook shared Alonso’s views.“I absolutely love racing in the rain, as you saw,” he said. “No, I mean, I really enjoy the challenge, but that was just beyond a challenge. You know, you’re just going down the straight, and you’re just thinking, if there’s anyone [who] stops, I’m toast and they’re toast. You could not see a thing.“And because of the tri-oval around here, and the painted white lines…I mean there’s a reason why NASCAR don’t race in the rain, because it’s just so difficult on an oval. It really is, and you’re crossing white lines, you’re trying to avoid the puddles, the engine’s shutting off because you’re aquaplaning so much. It was just awful.”

Poor visibility and differing closing speeds were problematic for BMW Team RLL’s Alex Zanardi.“Difficult, very difficult,” he said. “It’s [hard to] give the idea of how tough it was to keep the car on the road. Even behind the safety car, at times you could lose the car. When we finally went for the restart, it was all foggy down the straight. It was really difficult to see where I was going, there were people [lifting off] the throttle just because of that reason.

“And that of course created another reason of danger because you could bump into someone who had decided to not go to the speed you would expecting to travel. Yeah, we had some accidents, but in reality, we had much less than I was expecting.”GT Daytona winner Mirko Bortolotti, like the rest of the competitors in the class, had the advantage of ABS brakes along with traction control to help manage his car in the driving rain. The added technology was helpful, and also made GTD entries like his GRT Grasser Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 a stronger force to reckon with in the rain.“Honestly, the conditions we saw today were really challenging,” he said. “At some stage, I define it as worst-case scenario. It was really, really dangerous out there sometimes, and I think that at some stage, we had some advantage, obviously with having ABS compared to the prototypes was an advantage on the braking. And I think that also compared to some GTLM sometimes on traction, we were having … we were giving them hard time.“So it was a real battle out there. It was not just a battle with your class cars, but also with other classes for position because we know how important position is throughout the race for strategy and everything. And so, it was a real race against everything and everyone out there, but obviously the biggest challenge today was definitely the weather.”

By: J.J. O'Malley 5 hours ago Rain continued to fall through the morning, with the Rolex 24 field following the pace car for the entire 20th hour. Since 6 a.m., we’ve had only a half-lap of green flag racing due to the treacherous conditions. The No. 6 Acura Team Penske went to the garage after a pit stop at the 19m11s mark. The team has been working on a mechanical issue with the right side of the engine and is fifth in the class, 15 laps down.StandingsRace leader Ricky Taylor pitted at 19m23s, turning the No. 7 Acura over to Helio Castroneves. That gave the lead to Pipo Derani in the No. 31 Action Express Cadillac, with Castroneves taking over second when Jordan Taylor pitted the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac. Romain Dumas is fourth, four laps down in the CORE autosport Nissan. In GTLM, both Ford GTs have remained out for the past one hour, 35 minutes and are 1-2, with Joey Hand (No. 66) followed by Ryan Briscoe (No. 67). Frederic Makowiecki is third in the No. 911 Porsche, with James Calado now fourth after taking over from former leader Alessandro Pier Guidi in the No. 62 Risi Ferrari.Earl Bamber was running second in the No. 912 Porsche but spun in the trioval. He turned a few donuts before finally straightening out the car and continued. In GTD, A.J. Allmendinger continues to lead in the No. 86 Acura, while Henrik Hedman now leads LMP2 after taking over the No. 81 DragonSpeed ORECA.
