No pressure: Vaxiviere set to replace Alonso at Sebring

By: J.J. O'Malley 8 hours ago Matthieu Vaxiviere knows he has big shoes to fill when he steps into the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R in Saturday’s Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The team is coming off an IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship victory in the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, where regular drivers Jordan Taylor and Renger van der Zande co-drove with guest stars Fernando Alonso and Kamui Kobayashi.“Humungous shoes,” said Wayne Taylor Racing co-owner Max Angelelli, who “discovered” the 24-year-old Frenchman.“Part of my job is keeping my eyes open and looking at what’s going on in the industry,” Angelelli said. “I’m going to races, looking at young up-and-coming drivers with different experience that can complement the drivers that we already have. “A little bit like getting the sauce on top of a nice pasta.”

Vaxiviere, who raced in various French national series and GP3 before graduating to Le Mans with TDS Racing’s LMP2 team in 2017, was introduced as the team’s driver for the Michelin Endurance Cup races at Sebring, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta prior to the Rolex 24, won by the Taylor team for the second time in three years. “I saw Matthieu, I followed him, and I felt he deserved the chance,” Angelelli said.“I can only guess the pressure that he’s under,” Angelelli added. “Especially on our team — we are very demanding in all aspects. It’s not all about speed, it’s about team play and everything. It’s not easy. I’m staying away, I don’t want to increase the pressure.” Vaxiviere spent time with the team at the Rolex 24 — staying in Jordan Taylor’s spare bedroom — and got to know about its inner workings. Two weeks ago, he had the opportunity to test the No. 10 Cadillac DPi-V.R at Sebring.“This is an amazing team,” Vaxiviere said. “It was the best team in the field at the Rolex, and they’ve been really, really good for a long time. It’s a real pleasure to be here, and I will try to do my best to help them in the long-distance races. There is a nice atmosphere here, and now I’m looking forward to racing with them.“The car was really great in the test at Sebring,” he added. “We learned a lot over the two days, and I really enjoyed working with Renger, Jordan and the team. it’s nice to be here. Fernando and Kamui did really good at Daytona, and I will try to continue the work that they did here.”

The FIA WEC teams headed back out for their first taste of Sebring in full darkness tonight, in the second practice session of the week.As expected, it was a Toyota 1-2 up front with a gap of over a second between the fastest TS050 HYBRID and the best of the privateer LMP1s.The best time during FP2 was set by Jose Maria Lopez, who produced a 1m41.730s at the very start of the session to go quicker than the best time in FP1, but still not quite as fast as Conway’s benchmark from the pre-event test (1m41.152s).Fernando Alonso put the No. 8 TS050 HYBRID second with a 1m42.262s right at the end of the session to get within half a second of the top time. The No. 17 SMP Racing BR1 came closest to the Toyotas this time out, after Rebellion represented ‘the best of the rest’ in FP1. The Russian-flagged prototype finished with a 1m43.009s. The No. 11 SMP BR1 ended up fourth-fastest ahead of the two Rebellion R-13s.Jackie Chan DC Racing paced the LMP2 field, its No. 38 ORECA finishing up with a 1m47.716s courtesy of Stephane Richelmi to top the seven-car class, pushing Dunlop ahead of Michelin for the first time this weekend.Signatech Alpine once again ended up second, with the TDS Racing ORECA third.Racing Team Nederland was in the wars during FP2. The team, which ran fastest in the class during FP1, had its Dallara’s left-rear suspension collapse after just eight laps of the circuit. As a result, the car ended up last in the times.Another LMP2 team that hit trouble was DragonSpeed; its ORECA 07 stopping out on the circuit after losing its left-rear wheel, causing a full-course yellow early in the session. The team did manage to get it going again later on though, and managed to complete 18 laps.In the GTE ranks, Aston Martin Racing once again was the class of the field, with its No. 97 Vantage topping the times with a 1m57.792s from 2017 Sebring 12 Hours winner Alex Lynn. The two Fords – the No. 67 leading the No. 66 – slotted in second and third in the class, ahead of the No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari, which with newfound pace managed to climb as high as fourth. Gulf Racing’s Porsche topped GTE Am.RESULTSUP NEXT: WEC action resumes Thursday with Free Practice 3 at 4:15 ET.

New US resident Riberas targets another career ‘massive boom’ at Sebring
53 sharessharetweetemail
By: J.J. O'Malley March 14, 2019 9:46 AM Winning the GT Daytona class in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in 2015 was a huge boost in the career of Alex Riberas. This weekend, the native of Barcelona is looking to add a second victory here — in his first race as a resident of the United States.“Winning at Sebring with Alex Job was the biggest thing I had done in my career,” Riberas recalled. “It was a massive boom, and thanks to that race, I managed to become professional that year. So I feel I owe a lot of my personal life to this particular circuit, and every time I come here I feel grateful.”Riberas will run the full 2019 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the GTD class, co-driving the No. 19 Moorespeed Bardahl Audi R8 LMS GT3 with Will Hardman. Andrew Davis — set for his 11th attempt at the 12 Hours — completes the line-up.

“Sebring is always special, but this edition especially is going to be one of the greatest events in history. It’s an amazing pleasure and a blessing to be even a small part of it,” Riberas added. “It’s going to take a huge amount of factors all working in the right direction to win this race. I heard there’s probably going to be rain coming for Saturday. Strategy-wise and driver-wise, we all need to be on our ‘A’ game in order to win this race.”

Sellers eager to recreate 2018 late-race Sebring magic

Riberas recently realized a longtime dream when he moved to Austin, Texas, to be closer to the Moorespeed team base and his co-driver.“I want to be part of the Moorespeed project for the long term,” Riberas said. “It’s a brand-new project — we started from scratch — and it takes a lot of work, and I’m very much involved in it. When we ran the Rolex 24 At Daytona, I was still living in Europe. So this is the first time in America where I didn’t come from Europe to race — I came from Austin. It feels like the start of something that will be very special. Will is one of the best gentlemen drivers I’ve seen so far in the paddock, and the fact that we are living so close together gives us a strong opportunity to work hard and train together. Hopefully, we will fight together for big things in the future.”Another advantage of living in Austin is its closeness to America’s lone Formula 1 track.“I’m at COTA all the time,” he said. “I was there for the Ferrari Challenge, the World Challenge, everything. I was there to watch, drive and coach. Everything. It’s only 20 minutes away.“Living in America has been my dream since 2013, when I first came here. I’ve been following this dream, trying to make it happen for all these years. It means a lot to me, so my family supports me.”

By: J.J. O'Malley | 4 hours ago One year ago, the No. 48 Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 came alive during the final hour of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. Closing driver Bryan Sellers charged to the front on his closing stint, breaking open a tight battle to win the GT Daytona class by 8.169s.Now, the team is looking to repeat. Sellers returns with Corey Lewis in the No. 48 1st Phorm/Total Lubricants/ Mountain Motorsports/Paul Miller Auto Group Lamborghini, with Ryan Hardwick taking over the seat held by Martin Snow, who was promoted to gold status and left without a ride.“Last year, we obviously figured out what it took to win this race,” Sellers said. “Now, being able to execute that again is going to be difficult. We’re going to give it a shot. We have an idea of what we have to do and where we need to be. Our main focus right now is making sure we have a good, solid race car that drives well.”
Bryan Sellers (left) and Madison Snow celebrated a lot in 2018 but Sellers has new partners this time around.
Sebring was one of two 2018 triumphs for Sellers and Snow, who went on to claim the GTD title. They also won at Lime Rock and scored eight podium finishes — including taking third in the endurance classics at Daytona, Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta. Failure to score points in the early rounds cost them the Michelin Endurance Cup, which they lost by only four points. On Thursday, the Paul Miller Racing team flew under the radar, placing 10th through 12th in the three practice sessions in the class. The team picked up the pace in Friday’s final practice, with Sellers posting the third-fastest time.“Right now, we’re not too worried about anything, other than that the car drives well and all three drivers are happy,” Sellers said. “I think our strength last year was we were able to run through all three guys and we were all comfortable with the car. That’s a huge priority when you run for 12 hours.”

Tincknell keeps Mazda on top in Sebring night practice

Sellers also knows that there is an unknown factor that may play a role in the outcome of Saturday’s race.“It looks like the weather is going to play a massive part this time around,” he said. “We’re just going to have to be prepared for every condition that might come our way. Rain isn’t unusual at Sebring. This is a tricky place. It’s a tough race with traffic, a lot of cars and a lot of people who don’t normally race with us. It’s also one of the most physically demanding tracks. Twelve hours here definitely takes a toll on you. It’s as difficult — and likely, more difficult — than racing 24 hours at Daytona.”A year ago, Sellers won on the 20th anniversary of his first visit to Sebring with his father. Saturday, he will again be joined by his family at the race.“It’s great being back with Paul Miller Racing and having my family here again this weekend,” Sellers said. “Every weekend I get to bring my kids to the track is a good weekend.”

Late night pays off with Penske pole at Sebring

By: J.J. O'Malley 1 hour ago A late night by the Acura Team Penske paid off with the pole position for Saturday’s 67th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. Dane Cameron will lead the field to the green flag after capturing the pole on Friday with a track-record lap of 1m45.865s in the No. 6 Acura Team Penske Acura ARX-05 DPi.“We had to fix an electrical gremlin we had chased throughout the day,” said Cameron, who won his third Sebring pole but first overall. “It was one of those things that was buried in the middle of the car, and you had to pull the whole thing apart to get to it. And we had night practice, so it wasn’t until after 10p.m. that we started getting to it and the guys worked until 2 a.m.”Cameron’s first flying lap proved to be the pole winner.“It’s a little different on the Michelin tires this year,” Cameron said. “Before, it typically took a few laps to get to the sweet spot. But Michelin really comes on quick on a warm day like this, and has a lot of grip on the first two laps. We tried to bang in a good lap early. I made a few mistakes on the first few turns on my second lap, but the first one was good enough – and I was quite surprised.”Tristan Nunez qualified second in the No 77 Mazda Team Joest RT-24P. His lap of 1m46.011s was identical to the time turned in by Helio Castroneves in the No. 7 Penske Acura, with the Mazda taking the front-row position by virtue of having turned the time earlier in competition.Filipe Albuquerque will start fourth in the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R, edging Action Express Racing teammate Pipo Derani, fifth in the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac, 1m46.354s. The top nine qualifiers beat Tristan Vautier’s year-old DPi track mark of 1m47.432s.Patrick Pilet led a Porsche GT Team sweep of the top two positions in GT Le Mans. Pilet ran a lap of 1m55.899s in the No.911 Porsche 911 RSR, closely followed by Laurens Vanthoor, 1m56.042s in the No. 912.“My last pole was a long time ago at COTA,” said Pilet, whose lone previous pole came in 2015. “My car was well balanced. We were struggling at the beginning of the weekend, but the team made a few adjustments. We improved at every session, and since last night the car works pretty good.”
Pilet ended a long pole drought when he claimed GTLM honors. Image by LePage/LAT
Pilet and co-drivers Nick Tandy and Frederic Makowiecki return as defending GTLM winners at Sebring.“We won here last year and our goal is quite simple – to win here again this year,” Pilet said. “Porsche has a lot of success here (95 total victories), but there’s also a lot of pressure for us also to bring back another victory. We have a good package for success this weekend.”A Corvette and Ford will share row two. Antonio Garcia was third in the No. 3 Corvette Racing C7.R, 1m55.899s, followed by Richard Westbrook in the No. 67 Ford Chip Ganassi Ford GT, 1m56.189s.Trent Hindman captured his first career WeatherTech Championship pole for the GT Daytona class, running a lap of 1m59.917s in the No. 86 Meyer Shank Racing Curb Records Acura NSX GT3.“This is a result of the long hours the team put back in the shop,” Hindman said. “They also put in long hours last night, making changes to the car.”Robby Foley was second, 2m0.299s in the No. 96 Turner Motorsports BMW M6 GT3, followed by Zach Robichon, 2m0.505s in the rebuilt No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R.Fifth in GTD was Brandon Gdovic in the No. 47 Precision Performance Motorsports Lamborghini Huracan GT3 that sustained major damage in a incident during Thursday’s second practice session.Matt McMurry won the LMP2 pole in the No. 52 PR1 Mathisen Motorsports ORECA Gibson, with his lap of 1m49.728s edging No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports driver Kyle Masson by a mere 0.011s. After holding the pole throughout the session, McMurry was beaten by Masson on the final lap. Determined, McMurray managed to come back for his first career pole position in a Prototype. That was Friday’s final WeatherTech Championship on-track activity. Saturday begins with a 20-minute warm-up at 8 a.m., with the green flag set to wave at 10:40 a.m. RESULTS

By: J.J. O'Malley 14 hours ago Harry Tincknell put the No. 55 Mazda atop the timing charts for the second straight session, leading Thursday’s night practice in preparation for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.Tincknell ran 1m46.953s in the Mazda Team Joest Mazda RT-24P. Fastest of the day in the lead IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship class was co-driver Oliver Pla, who ran 1m46.834s in the No. 55.“Night practice at Sebring is really unique and always a fun experience,” Tincknell said after the session. The Mazda RT24-P had really good pace at the start of the session, but the team made some adjustments that helped unlock some more speed. You can’t read too much into what happens in practice, but with the sister car right behind us as well, it’s been a positive day for Mazda Team Joest. Jonathan, Oliver and myself are excited for what the race will bring.”

Lopez fastest as Dalla Lana has big off in final WEC practice Image by LAT

By: Stephen Kilbey 19 hours ago In the final WEC practice session ahead of qualifying for the Sebring 1000 Miles, Toyota continued to set the pace. The best time came from Jose Maria Lopez, a 1m41.88s in the No. 7 TS050 HYBRID to better Fernando’s benchmark time in the session by six tenths. The big story of the session, though, wasn’t Toyota’s dominance in the times, but of an incident in GTE Am.Paul Dalla Lana has left the No. 98 Aston Martin Racing mechanics in a race against time, after a big off at Turn 17 into the tires. The Canadian severely damaged the car’s side and rear in the impact. With qualifying just hours away, the crew will be working overtime to repair the Vantage, which was nursed back to the pits after the impact by Dalla Lana.

That was the only notable off in the session. There were a few offs for a few cars, though none of them ended with any sort of damage bill.Fastest of the LMP1 privateers for the first time this week was the No. 10 DragonSpeed BR1 AER, Renger van der Zande putting in a late 1m44.156s flyer to put the car ahead of the SMP BR1s and the Rebellion R-13s.More Le Mans/WEC!

LMP2 meanwhile, was headed up by Gabriel Aubry in the No. 38 Jackie Chan DC Racing ORECA which leads the class standings. His time was just a tenth faster than Andre Negrao in the Signatech Alpine which continues to finish up second in each session this week.Ford led the way in GTE Pro, former Sebring 12 Hours class winner Andy Priaulx putting the No. 67 Ganassi Ford ahead of the No. 51 AF Corse 488 GTE of Alessandro Pier Guidi. The two BMW M8 GTEs, run by MTEK, ended up third and fourth.GTE Am, ended with a Porsche 1-2-3, the No. 77 Dempsey Proton Racing Porsche after a Matt Campbell flyer top of the sheets ahead of the team’s sister car and the Project 1 example. RESULTS

UP NEXT: Qualifying for the 1000 Miles of Sebring takes place at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Default Huge run on Sebring tickets

Huge run on Sebring tickets

By: Marshall Pruett | March 12, 2019 3:48 PM Sebring International Raceway is experiencing an unprecedented run on advance ticket sales for this week’s combination IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship event. With the legendary 3.7-mile road course playing host to IMSA, North America’s premier endurance racing series, and for the first time, the WEC, the top international championship, from Wednesday through Saturday, Sebring president Wayne Estes says the demand for tickets, motorhome spaces, and parking is beyond anything the facility has received in the modern era.

From Daytona wreck to Sebring second row for Pfaff Porsche

Late night pays off with Penske pole at Sebring

“Right now, we’re up between 40 and 50 percent, both in dollars, and in units sold, over last year,” he told RACER. The standard Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring already brings in hordes of fans for its Thursday-Saturday action, and with the WEC added on to feature from Wednesday-Friday, culminating in its 1000 Miles of Sebring race, the spike in value has led to a rush on sales. As a result, free space to roam could also be in high demand.“The numbers terrify me, because it changes the logistics needs so tremendously,” he continued. “You want to alert everybody and say, ‘I know you’ve been used to coming to Sebring and having a little bit more elbow room in the past. Not this year’. So we’re having to take some steps to be sure that people stay a little more organized, and don’t spread out quite so much. And we’re encouraging people to recognize that there’s going to be a lot of first-timers here. And we want them to come back.“And be good to your neighbor. And be good to our security people when they say, hey park your car a little closer, so I can get another RV in here. These numbers are really surprising us. And we’re strongly recommending that people allow extra time to get in here both on Friday, and Saturday.”Estes credits the arrival of the WEC for the box office boom.“Clearly the big game-changer here is the WEC, but we were trending up anyway,” he said. “We have had… at a time when not just motorsports events, but sports events, and even entertainment events, have been struggling to stay flat, we’ve had an uptake at least the last three years. We got rain here in ’16. ’17 was a better bounce back, but it’s been a lot of positive things happen here in ’18.“And now this year, with the additions, a lot of in-market promotions… we’ve got some new partners that are doing a lot more in-market; Yuengling, and Pepsi are both new to us. And are both doing a lot of promotions along the coasts. So we have more media activities going on in Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale then we’ve had in recent years. There is that, and then there’s a lot of European fans that are coming.” To accommodate more fans, Sebring’s facilities team have made changes to some of the familiar spectating areas.“We have increased some of the capacities in areas that people have been before,” Estes said. “Not just the viewing mounds, but we’ve flattened out the viewing mounds, so we can put some grandstands on top of them. So instead of having 50, or 60 people on the mound, we can have 500 people on top of the mound.“When we built this new bridge to Green Park in the midway, there was an original plan to landscape these things with palmetto bushes to keep the fans off of them. Heck, you go up there and you say, why wouldn’t we want people to be on these things, because this is the spectator hill we’ve been looking for. Now we’ve got four of them. So we sodded it, instead of putting trees and palmetto bushes on it. And we’re going to let people sit up there, and I’m sure these things will be packed on Friday, and Saturday.”Take the unexpected rise in sales and attendance, plus IMSA’s ongoing restoration as a series, and Estes is feeling bullish about where the event is headed.“IMSA’s product clearly is better since they introduced the DPis, and these last couple years, things have just been going really well,” he said. “They’ve got more manufacturers, they’ve got a very positive image. They’ve been in growth mode, we’ve been in growth mode. And then we had this WEC thing come along. And good heavens though, what they’ve brought here…”
