Last year we had scores of races with less than 10 lead changes, the thinner splitter to reduce downforce is going to make the competition less competitive than last year. I applaud NASCAR for getting rid of the rear springs on superspeedways, the photogrammetry inspection that should reduce time, and the hi-speed cameras/data collectors.

Unfortunately, the rear springs are not going to prevent the car from getting airborne. I saw in Austin Dillon's accident and other accidents not involving lift off, that if a car hits another in the side or a sweet spot, the car that gets hit will fly like a baseball getting hit by the bat, it's called matter displacement in physics.

At first the lift off in the COT was caused by the wing, in which the purpose of a wing is to create lift. They need to go back to an air dam/valence so we don't have cars going through the grass that tears up the front bumpers.

NASCAR-mandated pit guns cause problems

Sunday, 25 February 2018

By Kelly Crandall / Image by Kinrade/LAT

At least three teams experienced problems with the NASCAR-mandated pit guns during Sunday's race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Kevin Harvick dominated and won the 325-lap race, but under the competition caution at Lap 30 he had to make two pit stops to ensure the lug nuts were tight. The No.4 team had the air hose coming off and Harvick dropped from the lead to 19th. He easily worked his way back to the front and picked up his first win of the season.

That wasn't a big problem in winning crew chief Rodney Childers' mind.
"I have to be honest, the people that took that on have really done an outstanding job," Childers said of the move to the spec pit gun. "There's no way I could sit up here and complain about anything they've done because I can't imagine taking that on during the winter, and what they did over a two-month span or a three-month span trying to get all that stuff ready for the teams.
"My opinion is we're going to go through ups and downs and we need to go through them together and learn together, and [having problems is] part of it."
Over the offseason, NASCAR made the move to a spec version of the pit gun in hopes of saving teams money, in addition to moving to a five-man pit crew. NASCAR handles the distribution of the pit guns through a lottery system each weekend and teams are limited when it comes to trying to modify them. The guns are manufactured by Paoli.
Martin Truex Jr., who finished fifth, had two slow pit stops because of the pit gun. According to crew chief Cole Pearn, the first air gun had an issue and the second was too slow. The team finally landed on a gun that was serviceable for the rest of the race.
"I think everybody is a little concerned," said Truex. "Somebody else is supplying you the parts and the guns, and the quality control, you really don't have control in all that. Last year I don't think we had one single issue with a pit gun or any equipment in the pit stall. That says a lot. Thirty-eight races last year and no issues and two races this year and already an issue.
"So, I'm a little nervous about that, but at the same time, it's the same for everyone. Hopefully, what comes around goes around, I guess."
Alex Bowman's team also hit trouble. He finished three laps down in 20th.
Brad Keselowski was another driver who felt there hadn't been pit gun issues over the past few seasons. On the topic in general, Keselowski said he wasn't asked about it before the decision was made to go to a spec air gun.
"It was a decision made by RTA [Race Team Alliance] and NASCAR," Keselowski said. "I don't think I'm allowed to have an opinion."

Air guns had become a popular topic in recent seasons as teams poured money into developing air guns that would help them gain time on pit road. Organizations like Joe Gibbs Racing were often pointed at as having a slight advantage with customized pit guns that were lighter and faster.

"I think the reason teams built them on their own is because they were more reliable that way," said fourth-place finisher Denny Hamlin. "They could control everything. That's probably why – amongst the competition side of things, they don't want to fail because it's a bad luck thing. They want it to fail because they did a bad job. It's your own fault then."

So NASCAR mandates an air wrench made by Paoli.

It sells for $950 and is not reliable.

It's one thing to lose a race because your guys were slow.

It's far different when they force you to have a slow air gun, or one that doesn't work, or
one where the air hose falls off.

$950 for the air wrench?
------------

I have a solution for the NASCAR guns they force you to use that don't work.

I bet it took less time for YOU to realize the solution than it did to read my post!

If NASCAR forced the faulty air guns on crews to "save them money"
$950 is a lot more than a good Mac or Matco air wrench.

Save money? BS BS BS Some people are saying that maybe we should force all
crews to use a lug wrench to tighten the lugs and save a lot more money.
--------------

Some people are saying that gas tanks should be refilled with 2 gallon cans with a 3/4" hose.
-------------

Remember when IMSA said that crews were too fast so they screwed them out
of the lead they had worked so hard to build up.....with mandatory pit stop times?

NASCAR defends new air guns after reported issues Monday, 05 March 2018

By Kelly Crandall / Image by Kinrade/LAT

NASCAR's Steve O'Donnell took exception to air gun issues being a main topic of conversation after the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The series' executive vice president and chief racing development officer was asked about the spec-issued guns on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Monday morning after problems with the equipment continued for a second straight Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race. Winner Kevin Harvick had a pin come out of the gun after one of his stops and Daniel Suarez was also said to have had issues.

Last weekend in Atlanta multiple teams experienced various malfunctions.
"I wouldn't assess the race as that's the leading story by any means," O'Donnell said. "Air gun issues have been part of the sport forever, so let me dispel the myth that there's never been a failure. I think [FOX analyst] Larry [McReynolds] said that very well during the broadcast.
"Believe we had one that we're looking into on the Cup side, the 19 car [Suarez], that we're looking at. We don't view an air gun like on the 4 car [Harvick] where the gun actually works for the pit stop and then has an issue. I think we're making a lot out of this, which I know fans want to do. I've never heard pit guns talked about in the past which is fair when there's failures, it's new."
After collaboration between NASCAR and the Race Team Alliance the decision was made to implement mandated pit guns this season, the hope being it would level the playing field and help teams cut down on costs as many had begun to pour resources into developing their own to be faster and lighter.
Each Sunday before the race, a team will draw a number and then receive the corresponding case with the air gun and other equipment that goes with it. This allows the process to be random, and NASCAR and Paoli, the manufacturer, have also worked to limit the amount of tampering teams can do to the air guns.

[h=2]'Here we go again': Pit gun issue angers No. 4 team[/h] Sunday, 08 April 2018

By Kelly Crandall / Image by LaBounty/LAT

Kevin Harvick and crew chief Rodney Childers had strong words about the NASCAR-mandated pit guns after a rough day at Texas Motor Speedway.

Childers actually used an in-race interview to get his point across.

"It's frustrating," Childers told Fox Sports. "The crazy part is the lug nut in the jack, I don't know if we could do that again if we had to. The loose wheels, at some point we got to get these guns better. I've bit my lip all year about this stuff and I'm tired of biting my lip about it.

"We've got to get some better stuff out here for these guys to change tires with and hopefully we can do that over the next few weeks. Kevin had problems yesterday in the Xfinity race because of the same issue and here we go again today."
Harvick said he had four loose wheels in Saturday's Xfinity Series race.
Among the issues the No. 4 had Sunday were a lug nut flying into the jack, costing Harvick eight spots, and a second pit stop early in the second stage for a loose wheel. Pitting under green, Harvick fell off the lead lap and a timely caution in the third stage put him back in contention.
"We've talked to [NASCAR]. Everybody on pit road has talked to them," said Harvick. "This is four out of seven weeks that we've had trouble with the pit guns. Yesterday the rear pit wouldn't even – we had two lug nuts that were tight in the last two pit stops. You had two lug nuts that had 30 pounds of torque on them. Today, you have another one – the wheel doesn't even get tight. It's just a mess."
All of this came after Harvick dominated the first stage of the O'Reilly Auto Parts 500, leading 87 laps. He would eventually finish second.
"We did overcome a lot. That was unfortunate," said Harvick. "We had a pathetic day on pit road, two days on pit road because of pit guns. When you have a pit gun problem like we have multiple times and been able to overcome it, and then today we couldn't overcome it.
"Time after time you can't get the lug nuts tight because the pit guns don't work."
Lining up second to Kyle Busch on the race's final restart, Harvick had a shot at his fourth win of the season. However, Busch quickly drove away and Harvick was never able to close enough to mount a serious challenge.
"Kyle's car was good enough to where he could get out there and run pretty good in clean air," said Harvick. "It took us the whole run to be able to get everything back together and do everything we needed to do to make up a position.
"We weren't as good behind him as we were in front of him. His car would run fast enough. There is only so much you can make up."

[h=2]NASCAR looking into pit gun complaints[/h] Monday, 09 April 2018

Kelly Crandall / Image by LaBounty/LAT

Mandated pit guns continue to be a point of contention among teams and drivers but NASCAR is still not ready to admit to widespread problems.

NASCAR senior vice president of competition Scott Miller confirmed on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio that officials continue to gather data and are working with Paoli to rectify any issues. However, Miller said commenting on the various incidents occurring on pit road is difficult until the guns and their part and pieces in question are examined.

"This isn't the first time that there's been a loose wheel on a car," said Miller. "Everybody's always quick to blame the gun, not saying that it may not have been a gun problem, but we have to look at everything before we can flat out say we had a gun problem."

Kevin Harvick and his crew chief, Rodney Childers, lashed out after Sunday's race at Texas. Harvick had one loose wheel that resulted in an unscheduled pit stop under green flag conditions, as well as a freak incident of a lug nut flying into the jack and costing his team time on another stop.
The 2014 Cup champion used the words "pathetic" and "embarrassing" when talking about the pit gun issues. Childers said during an in-race interview he was tired of biting his lip on the issue and that better equipment needed to be given to teams.

Collaboration between NASCAR and the teams led to mandated pit guns.
"The problem had had a few more hitches in it than obviously we wished it would but we're making progress with it," Miller continued. "We'll continue to do that and continue to evaluate and continue to try to get better every week and make sure that we dig into whatever problems happen up and down pit road and get them rectified.

"Everything in motorsports is a development process and this is no different. It's unfortunate that it's caused some people some problems but development is what it is, and we'll continue to keep it ramped up and get it right."

NASCAR tweaks rules on tires, pit road equipment

NASCAR issued a rules bulletin Wednesday with noteworthy changes regarding tires and equipment allowed on pit road.

Beginning with the Coca-Cola 600 next weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway, teams will no longer be required to start the race on their qualifying tires. And all teams will now be allotted four sets of tires for practice and qualifying. The exception will be at superspeedways (Daytona, Talladega) where it will be three sets.

Additionally, on enhanced weekends where the schedule is not the traditional three days, teams will be able to carry over the tires they qualified on to the race. For those who do not put qualifying laps on their tires, they will have to carry over a scuffed set of tires from practice.
NASCAR has been experiencing issues this season with drivers being able to start a race on sticker tires if they did not pass pre-qualifying inspection and make a lap. It created an advantage for those drivers over those who had put laps on their tires during qualifying.
The other amendment to the rule book was that teams must use “traditional battery-powered equipment” when repairing cars on pit road. Any other equipment can only be used at the discretion of the series managing director.
At Talladega Superspeedway last month, Furniture Row Racing grabbed attention for the large saw they pulled out to repair Martin Truex Jr.’s car after a crash. Under this rule, that would no longer be allowed.
