A project begun in September and expected to take six weeks to complete is still underway, according to a tweet by NASCAR.
Watkins Glen International has been working on repaving the entire surface of the famed road course, including the boot—a section of track not currently used by NASCAR.
On Saturday, the official twitter account of NASCAR posted pictures of the repaving that has continued into December.
Joey Logano was the latest winner of a Sprint Cup race there when he passed Kevin Harvick on the final circuit of the Cheez-it 355 at the Glen after Harvick’s car faltered on low fuel. Logano led only one lap, but as the winner he earned the right to tear up the frontstretch in preparation for the repaving. Work on the track began immediately following the race.
Of the two road courses on which NASCAR runs Cup races, Watkins Glen has always been the faster. New asphalt is going to increase the speeds even more and could contribute to more passing with greater adhesion in the corners.
