IMSA: Jeff Gordon joins WTR Cadillac Rolex 24 team for 2017 Marshall Pruett / Images courtesy WTR/Brian Cleary

Jeff Gordon's retirement plans are on hold once more as the NASCAR legend has signed on to compete in January's Rolex 24 at Daytona with Wayne Taylor Racing.
The factory-affiliated WTR Cadillac DPi-V.R program will host the four-time stock car champion on his return to the 3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway after a 10-year absence. The Californian attempted to hang up his helmet at the conclusion of the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, but was drafted in to drive for the ailing Dale Earnhardt Jr. for what turned out to be eight races for his former team, Hendrick Motorsports.

Gordon is far from a newcomer at Daytona's second most famous motor race. After testing with the WTR team on the blended road course/oval in 2006, he came back to test again in 2007 and made his one and only start at the 24-hour classic in a Riley-Pontiac Daytona Prototype with Wayne Taylor, Max Angelelli and Jan Magnussen (pictured). The foursome started second and finished third.
Given the chance to reunite with his old sports car teammates, Gordon leapt at the opportunity to drive the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R with Angelelli and Taylor's sons Ricky and Jordan for the 55th running of the Rolex 24.
"I really enjoyed racing in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2007 with Max, Wayne and Jan," Gordon said. "When I announced I would no longer be competing full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, my hope was that I would get an opportunity like this to compete again in such a prestigious event – with Konica Minolta and Wayne Taylor Racing – with the hopes of winning it this time. I know that Ricky and Jordan are super-fast, and I believe it will be a very strong combination."
Having the immensely popular 45-year-old back within the WTR family is a point of pride for the elder Taylor.
"We are excited to have Jeff back in the lineup with us for the 2017 Rolex 24," he said. "He was with us when we started this race team back in 2007 and he helped us finish on the podium. We have kept in close touch ever since and have always been looking for another opportunity to have him join our driver lineup. That opportunity is finally here after his retirement from full-time competition in NASCAR and we are very much looking forward to working with him again."
Gordon is expected join the Taylor brothers and Angelelli in pre-event testing at Daytona later this month, continue testing in early January at the Roar Before the 24, and was also rumored to have taken part in recent private DPi testing overseen by GM Racing. By the time the green flag waves for the race, he should be close to the pace established his young championship-winning teammates.
"Having Jeff Gordon join the team is really a dream come true for all of us," Ricky Taylor said. "It is a huge compliment to how well-respected the team has become over the years for someone with the history and career of Jeff Gordon to want to be a part of it. For me, it will be surreal to drive alongside a legend and I can't wait to hear all of the stories he has to share from his years of racing. I'm sure he will be a great addition to the lineup and hopefully we can all get our first Rolex 24 win together."
The presence of a NASCAR star on the grid will continue a Rolex 24 tradition, as Jordan Taylor explains.
"It used to be common to have NASCAR guys joining teams for the Rolex but, over recent years, it's become less and less frequent," he said. "Jeff Gordon is a name that everyone knows worldwide. He is one of the biggest names in motorsports. He drove with my dad and Max at the Rolex back in 2007, so it'll be cool to have a 10-year reunion with him and the team. Sportscar racing offers a unique perspective for drivers, where we have to share the same car. I can't wait to compare notes and feedback with such a legend of our sport. It's going to be an experience of a lifetime."
For Angelelli, having his old friend in the car for another shot at Rolex 24 glory – on the debut of the Cadillac DPi-V.R – has come at the perfect time.
"In a way, I'm such a fan of his, but I look forward to sharing our new Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R racecar with him, discussing our setup and race strategy," he said. "It was great the first time – we might have won that race if some things would have gone our way. Now that it's happening again, with the new car, it's going to be absolutely great."

[h=2]IMSA: Cadillac reveals DPi-V.R for Prototype class[/h] Wednesday, 30 November 2016

RACER Staff / Images courtesy Cadillac Racing

Cadillac is bringing its new 2017 Cadillac DPi-V.R racecar to the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series Prototype class.
The 2017 DPi-V.R – which will make its debut at the Rolex 24 At Daytona with Wayne Taylor Racing and Action Express Racing – is the first prototype race car from the New York-headquartered manufacturer since 2002. Action Express, which has won the last three WeatherTech Championship Prototype titles, will run a pair of Cadillacs, while the Wayne Taylor Racing team will continues its one-car effort and longstanding relationship with General Motors.

"It is not possible to overstate how thrilled all of us at IMSA are to officially welcome Cadillac, one of the world's most respected premium automotive brands, back to Prototype racing in the WeatherTech Championship," said IMSA President Scott Atherton. "This is exactly the type of program we had in mind when we announced the Daytona Prototype international concept last year.
"As we open a new era of Prototype competition in 2017, we now have three benchmark examples of manufacturers using this platform to showcase their impressive and unique technology at the highest level. We cannot wait to get the new era underway in just a few short weeks at Daytona."
The DPi-V.R is propelled by a race-prepared, normally aspirated Cadillac 6.2 liter V-8 engine that shares inherent architecture with the engines of the third-generation Cadillac CTS-V (640 horsepower) and fifth-generation Cadillac Escalade (420 horsepower). The engine produces approximately 600 horsepower when tuned for racing as defined by IMSA-mandated air restrictors, with a maximum allowable RPM of 7,600. The engine transfers power to the rear wheels through an X-TRAC paddle-shift transmission.
2
"Cadillac is proud to return to the pinnacle of prototype racing in North America after a 14-year absence," said Johan de Nysschen, president of Cadillac. "Cadillac's V-Performance production models – the ATS-V and CTS-V — are transforming our brand's product substance, earning a place among the world's elite high performance marques. The Cadillac DPi-V.R further strengthens our V-Performance portfolio, placing Cadillac into the highest series of sports car racing in North America."
"The DPi-V.R race car was an exciting new canvas for the Cadillac design and sculpting team," said Andrew Smith, Global Cadillac Design executive director. "The studio embraced the opportunity to interpret the Cadillac form language, line work and graphic signature for this premier prototype racing application. Every detail of the final design was selected to support the car's on-track performance and unmistakable Cadillac presence."
Cadillac and its designers collaborated with key partners including chassis builder Dallara, ECR Engines and race teams to prepare the 6.2-liter V-8- powered Cadillac DPi-V.R over the past year.
The DPi-V.R will make its public on-track debut during a two-day IMSA-sanctioned test at Daytona on Dec. 13-14.

[h=2]IMSA: AXR sees 'great results' in Cadillac testing[/h] Thursday, 01 December 2016

RACER Staff / Image by LAT

Action Express Racing is already hard at work testing their two recently announced Cadillac DPi-V.R racecars as the team readies for the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The 2017 DPi-V.R – which will make its debut at the Rolex 24 At Daytona – is the first prototype racecar from the New York-headquartered manufacturer since 2002. Action Express, which has won the last three WeatherTech Championship Prototype titles, and Wayne Taylor Racing's one-car effort, will run the Cadillac Dpi-V.Rs.

"We wanted to get to the race track and start testing our Cadillac DPi-V.R as soon as we could, and we already have a couple of tests under our belt," Action Express team manager Gary Nelson said. "Our early testing is showing some great results. We've learned a lot about a high-downforce racecar - a car that instantly grabs the track. Our drivers are learning about the new car and whether they have to make any adjustments to their driving style to accommodate the new racecar. In addition, our engineering staff is also learning about the new car and how to best tune the car."
The team's championship-winning 2016 driver lineup - Joao Barbosa, Dane Cameron, Eric Curran and Christian Fittipaldi - return to the team for the upcoming campaign. The team will continue its relationship with partners Whelen Engineering and Mustang Sampling.
"In the past, we've had a lot of success with our simple strategy of not changing things unless absolutely necessary," Nelson said. "With IMSA's introduction of the new Daytona Prototype international (DPi) in the Prototype class, it was necessary for us to make changes for the upcoming season. While we have a lot to learn, we're also looking forward to the challenge of developing a reliable and competitive new race car."
Action Express will continue its engine relationship with ECR, which has been with the team for five years.
"We're excited about our relationship as a Cadillac partner team and utilizing the Cadillac DPi-V.R in competition during the upcoming season," Nelson said. "We're also looking forward to working together with our new chassis partner Dallara, as well as continuing our relationship with ECR engines. Obviously, there's plenty of work for us to do to prepare for the start of the 2017 season and we've been extremely busy getting familiar with our new racecars."

Gordon won't defend Rolex 24 win

Tuesday, 24 October 2017

By Marshall Pruett / Image by Alexander Trienitz/LAT

One big name in, one big name out.
Of all the things retired NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon has planned for 2018, returning to defend his overall win with Wayne Taylor Racing at the Rolex 24 At Daytona is not on the list. With Gordon's absence, Fernando Alonso should have no competition for No. 1 status in the autograph session.
Having stood atop the podium with Ricky and Jordan Taylor and Max Angelelli in January after capturing the victory in WTR's Cadillac DPi-V.R, the four-time Cup title winner says he's chosen to cherish the memory and ride into the Rolex 24 sunset.
"I mean, who doesn't want to go out on top!" Gordon told RACER. "I plan on watching the event – not competing in it. I'll be pulling for Jordan Taylor and Wayne Taylor Racing, and I'm excited to see how Ricky does with Penske's new team."

Gordon retired from competing NASCAR at the end of 2015, only to return later in 2016 to sub for the injured Dale Earnhardt Jr. Along with his new career with FOX as a broadcaster, Gordon took another shot at the Rolex 24 after finishing third on his endurance racing debut in 2005.

The fairy tale result for Gordon with WTR, which also saw team veteran Angelelli hang up his helmet on a high note, will stand as a transition point for the team on its return to Daytona in January.
Taylor's son Ricky recently moved to Acura Team Penske as teammate to Helio Castroneves and Graham Rahal, and with Angelelli and Gordon out of the frame, WTR will have at least two and possibly three seats to fill for IMSA's WeatherTech SportsCar Championship opener in Florida.

Ryan Hunter-Reay, who drove for WTR at Petit Le Mans, is rumored to be the team's endurance driver next year, which would take one seat out of the discussion. The team is also working to identify Ricky's full-time replacement, and a number of drivers are said to be under consideration. Although WTR normally utilizes three drivers for Daytona, and made an exception with the addition of Gordon, it's unclear whether the factory Cadillac program would seek a fourth driver for the Jan. 25-28 event.

Gordon and Hendrick: An enduring partnership

631 sharessharetweetemail
By: Kelly Crandall June 22, 2018 10:44 AM This is what Rick Hendrick and Jeff Gordon always envisioned: Gordon no longer a driver, but still a vital part of the Hendrick Motorsports operation.
“Always thought he would the guy,” Hendrick tells RACER. “I wish he was there full-time. I wish he was there all the time, but he’s doing a great job on TV and he wants to spend time with his family. He gives us a lot of time, but I’ll take all of Jeff Gordon I can get.”
Gordon retired from the NASCAR Cup Series at the end of 2015 after 23 seasons as Hendrick’s main man. Since hanging it up though, Gordon has transitioned comfortably from wheelman to television broadcaster, but he is still heavily invested in HMS as a minority owner, mentor, and consultant. He is giving back to the company – and the man – who made him.
“Part of my vision was that I’d hope I’d have a long career where one day I could, on my own terms, step away from driving, and I knew 10 years ago that I liked the business side and I needed to learn more about it,” Gordon tells RACER. “So, I guess I always felt like, when that day comes when I step away, then I want to get more involved and I look forward to that challenge. Over the last three years, that has definitely taken place.
“Right now, I’m trying to juggle a few different things, but I’m enjoying what I’m doing and there’s time when I wish I could be there more for Rick and HMS.” With a laugh he adds, “there’s other times where I don’t know that I’m quite ready for that.”
Neither Hendrick or Gordon can point to a specific timeframe or event where their relationship morphed from driver and owner to family-like: Hendrick says that he goes back and forth between looking at Gordon as a son and as a younger brother. The easiest answer for both is that it happened naturally over time.
But Gordon does admit he immediately looked up to Hendrick after being hired in the early 1990s, and was impressed by how Hendrick carried himself; how respectful he was. The more time Gordon spent with Hendrick, the more Gordon wanted to be like him. Plus, there was something striking about the balance Hendrick had between working hard and spending time with family. Success on the track also went a long way in bringing the two together.
Gordon and Hendrick celebrate after winning the 2001 Brickyard 400. Image by LeSieur/LAT

“Even though Rick had a lot of success in the automotive business and good success as a car owner, we kind of experienced some things for the first time together, which instantly bonds you,” says Gordon. “We won our first championship together, we won the Brickyard together, we worked together on the 48 team being put together, and seeing that team win for the first time and win championships.
“So those experiences, especially the championships when you go to back then New York and you’re at the Waldorf and you’re on the stage, that’s just a unique experience that only that team [gets].”
Off the track, there were many personal moments that showed the loyalty the two had for each other. When Hendrick was diagnosed with a form of leukemia in late 1996, Gordon was “there for me”, he says.
When Gordon went through a nasty divorce in 2002, it was Hendrick whom he leaned on, and even spent some time living with. Together, the company banded around each other and the Hendrick family when a 2004 team plane crashed, killing all 10 people on board, among them Hendrick’s only son, brother and nieces.
“Well, Rick’s a very loyal guy,” Gordon says. “In the people he has worked for or worked with for many years, that’s kind of his own code, and so when other people show that in more than just business, I think that carries a lot of weight.
“When somebody is going through a tough time, personally you want to be there for them. He was there for me when I went through my divorce, which was one of the toughest times that I went through, and I was there as much as possible at the times he was going through a lot.”
Even business matters between Gordon and Hendrick had a personal touch. While there was always an individual who needed to draw up the contract, the two always came to terms of a new deal on their own. Gordon recalls how in every instance before the deal was done they would sit and go over what each wanted, and they were “always willing to compromise.”
“The thing I can say about Jeff Gordon, we never had to have a lawyer to negotiate our deal,” Hendrick says. “We could do it with a handshake. He knew he could count on me, and I knew I could count on him.”
Gordon takes his 93rd – and final – win; Martinsville, 2015. Image by LePage/LAT
Says Gordon: “When you deal with someone on that level and you can still be friends and can laugh about it and talk about it, and then you have a successful business relationship, that definitely keeps you close. It’s funny that he mentions that, because we do talk about that sometimes. And now, whether it be Jimmie Johnson or Alex Bowman or Chase Elliott or William Byron, I always say to them, I don’t know where you’re at in your negotiations with Rick, but I highly recommend at some point you sit face to face with him and tell him what you want. That’s what I think worked so well for us, and built a strong bond and got the deal done.”
No matter what it is, Hendrick says he can ask Gordon to do anything. He calls Gordon “perfect as you could ask for” and describes him as “special people.” Gordon, he says, can do anything he wants – skiing, television, hosting Saturday Night Live or co-hosting Live with Regis and Kelly. And yes, Hendrick laughs, even dance.
The amusing thing listening to these two Hall of Famers talk about their relationship is that while they have plenty to say, both struggle when asked pointedly: what does the other mean to you? It’s clear both are happy still being able to work together and the respect level among them, somehow, continues to grow even after over two decades together.
But this is what both Hendrick and Gordon expected. The only question left is how much more will Gordon end up doing at Hendrick Motorsports? For now, at least, Gordon says he’ll remain involved for as long as Hendrick is, too.
“It means too much to me,” Gordon says. “It is like family. Every opportunity you see me doing is because of the relationship with Rick and Hendrick Motorsports. That and NASCAR and the commitment my parents made to racing. That’s what gave me all this opportunity. I’m going to make the most of it.
“Funny thing is, Rick thought it would be a good idea if I did TV, so here I am doing TV and now he’s like, you know what, can we have you over here full-time? It’s something we talk about a lot *– and I never say never.”

Jeff at the age of 13 liked reading Open Wheel magazine and in one of the

issues he saw an article about a 14 year old named Sport Allen who was racing sprint cars in Florida. John Bickford, upon hearing about Allen then contacted Lee Osborne from Jamestown, IN who built sprint cars. Lee, reluctant at first because of Jeff's young age, finally sent John an Osborne chassis to Vallejo where John and Jeff built it from the ground up.

The engine was built by Earl Gaerte of Rochester, IN. John spent $25,000 on the car getting ready for 1985. In February 1985 John took Jeff to Jax Raceways in Jacksonville, FL for the first part of the All Star Circuit of Champions Speedweek. At Jax they learned the ropes from Butch Smith who was a championship sprint car owner. Lee had contacted Butch who

advised him to be on the lookout for John and Jeff and to help them with chassis setups. During John and Jeff's arrival at Speedweek officials did not want Jeff to race because he was 13 years old. John persuaded the officials by creating a waiver saying if anything happened to Jeff on the track it would release them of all legal liability, reminded them that they had

no age limit and that Jeff would start in the back of races no matter where he qualified. Jeff in his first race started at the rear of the field and in the first lap lost control hitting the wall causing minor damage to his sprint car. Right after that it started raining bringing the caution out and the rest of the race was cancelled. Later in the week John and Jeff finished out

Speedweek with the second part of it being the Winternationals at East Bay Speedway in Tampa, FL. Jeff in his second attempt at a sprint car race, qualified on the second row in his first Heat Race. Jeff in the #16X car made it to the B Main and finished 18th out of 54 for the entire event earning his first ever paycheck which was $300. During the Winternationals

Jeff was also labeled the youngest sprint car driver in the world. Over the next few weeks ESPN ran a short profile about Jeff on TV during their Speedweeks program (
). Over the next month, Jeff tried to compete in other sprint car races back home in California because he was in school all week there, but tracks would not let him saying he had to be either 16

or 18 to race. In March Jeff was allowed only to practice, not race later in the night, at events at Kings Speedway in Hanford, CA. Tracks in California continued to refuse Jeff because of his age which limited his racing for the first part of 1985. At soon as Jeff finished the school year and the summer came, John took Jeff to Ohio where there were the most tracks in

one regional area which had the least age restrictions. Dave Heitmeyer of H&M Motor Sales, a used car dealer in Finlay, OH, had seen Jeff race in Florida. Heitmeyer offered two rooms out of his nearby home for John and Jeff to stay upon them coming to Ohio for the summer. Heitmeyer was also a track announcer at Millstream Motor Speedway in Findlay.

Heitmeyer during the summer often helped John and Jeff at tracks and sometimes even drove their sprint car trailer for them. In turn, Jeff's sprint car sometimes displayed a H&M Motor Sales sponsorship along with MPD Racing, John's racing parts business in Vallejo. Jim Streicher, who owned a print shop in Findlay and had a son named Mike that raced in

USAC (United States Auto Club), provided a building for John and Jeff to store and work on the sprint car. On June 16th Jeff won his first Heat Race at Millstream. During another race he slid off the track into the fans' parking lot. When Millstream discovered Jeff was only 13 years old, they told him he could not return until he was 16. Later in June Jeff won his first B

Main at K-C Raceway in Waverly, OH. In another race at K-C he flipped. During the summer Jeff raced in 22 events at tracks such as Fremont, Springfield, Tri-City and Vermilion County Speedway along with finishing 2nd in an A Main at K-C and Bloomington Speedway. When asked about his life goals, his answer is that he would like to win the Indianapolis

500 (
