Default Grassroots Motorsports Magazine $2011 Challenge - TR8

$2011 Challenge Updates: Grassroots Motorsports Magazine

Tod and I built a TR7 for the Grassroots Motorsports Magazine $2011 Challenge. The link above is from their site, scroll down a bit to see the car.

I found a rusted out TR8 with a hole through the block, Tod found a clean '75 TR7 coupe, and we scored a 4.2 litre Rover V-8 for $200 on Craig's list. (Oh, and a wet shot of Nitrous Oxide for $125.)

Move all the TR8 stuff to the TR7, add lowering springs, Poly bushings, used race tires, A ton of welding, Paint, And almost exactly 1,000 of labour .... and there you have it.

She weighed in at 2018 lbs, and the rover motor is rated at 200 hp. That's 10.1 lbs/hp
Needless to say I'm motivated to have her weigh less than 2,000 lbs for $2012, so our ratio is less than 10 lbs/hp

I'm no computer genius, but here are some lings to photos.

We placed 6th in concourse judging (a huge achievement if you have been there, and gone threw it) and 14th overall (A cone at the autocross cost us 9th place overall) We had zero testing into the car because we had to put it together so quickly, but we do plan to return next year with a well sorted car.

There was a '67 Volvo there that I really liked. A Honda N600 with a turbo-ed civic motor in the back (That I think they should have put up front), A sharp looking Corvette, the Nelson's 10.5 second VW beetle, and a V-6 MG. Of course there was your normal stack of Miatas, civics, RX-7s, and E-30s with turbos or V-8s. (Yawn. I'm really tired of ratted out Miatas with turbos bolted on.)

So Danny hit a cone for you? You need to get a real driver in that thing. I just happen to know one.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

I was able to post some photos on a British car forum. (Angie, please don't let them ban me for linking to anoter forum that's only visited by 8 people (world-wide).)

BritishV8 Forum: $2011 GRM Challenge TR8

Danny coned because we asked him to drive the snot out of an untested, 36 year old car. I've never seen him drive so aggressively. We plan to return in 2012 with a well sorted TR8. (Well one with more camber, working brakes, and a motor that revs to 6k.)
Oh, and if your are used to Limited Slip, ABS, VTEC, IRS, etc., etc., ..... this is not the car for you.

Rob, The only reason we got buy without your expertise is because the drags were rained out. We never got to turn on the Nitrous.

Your attention to detail is astounding. The Mustang was nice, but this car looks flawless! Is it really that nice, or it is just really good paint work and cleanliness?
