Default Question about getting started in local motorsport

So I am looking into getting started in local motorsports. I have read many faqs and the scca rule book online for auto x. I want to use my 350z but it doesn't really fall into any class per se. What happens in that case?

Every club has different classes and rules. If you post your modifications, including tires, we can help you. Almost every car has a class, and your 350 definitely has one. I would recommend starting out with the FAST club and then trying out all the others to see if you like them better.

Thanks for the help.

2004 350z track

Supercharger
Upgraded intake/exhaust plumbing
Coilover suspension
Upgraded sway bars
Aftermarket wheels
Upgraded brake pads
Aftermarket front bumper

I think that sums up the major upgrades. Cars has a full interior with all factory comforts intact.

For FAST you would be in E1. Which is the top class for modified cars on Street tires. Your car would fit in nicely in this class.
Rules & Classing » FAST

For SCCA you would be in SSM which allows you to run racing compound tires, but you don't have to, you can just run whatever tires you have on there. But unfortunately if someone shows up with racing compound tires, you will be at a disadvantage. Which could be good for you if you view it as a challenge to beat someone in a more well-prepped car.

With the SCCA as well there is a Novice class for first timer and people who are just getting their feet wet in AutoX.

Don't get hung up on classing. BLUF: If you're just starting out, run the car wherever it falls and just get into the sport. Six months of talking to and riding with folks at events, looking at other cars, and driving your own will tell you more than anything else. Preregistration for the next FAST event opens up tomorrow night...the sticky with everyone's schedule at the top of this forum will give you links to other clubs schedules.

Jamie Has a great point.. Some of my best early events were with the Porsche clubs where everyone in a non-porsche got classed in a X class... with no perceived hope of winning the class I was able to focus on my driving. well guess what I sometimes was the fastest non-Porsche. and I beat a BUNCH of $100,000+ machines with my little eta powered $1500 E30. on Free takeoff Race tires.

Cool! Thanks for all the advice guys, it is really appreciated. I guess all I need is a helmet! I think I will make my debut at FAST in a few months, see you there!

Fixed that for you...now go to FAST July autocross and sign up! Doesn't matter which car...any one of them will do.
