Impessions of a Porsche 930
1) I like power steering. The 930 doesnt have it. And you can tell, at ANY speed. Steering is VERY demanding, and fairly slow
2) A 4 speed manual geared to goto like 210mph is NOT cool on a course where you only hit ~80mph. This is even worse when combined to an engine that doesnt like to make power off-idle, and is laggy-ish. On a good note, ive never driven a tranny that can take 2-1 shifts so simply and easily.
3) OLD BFG R1s arent the best tires ever.
4) The rear end of a 930 is wider than you think. Remember this while coming out of turn and taking the "wide" line, because you will drop a wheel into the grass, and the lovely people at Martin Sports Car club WILL call you off-course.
5) I like throttle response....the 930 has none if youre not in the meaty part of the powerband. Refer to #2 to see how often you reach the "meaty part of the powerband".
6) Tony drives that thing far better than I do. Props to him. He beat me by 2 seconds, and I dont know how. At a Florida State Fairground events, Im suprised he can pull the times he does in that car.
7) You have to EASE on the brakes. If you dont, you'll lock the fronts before the weight is over them, and they will flatspot, although not badly. Sorry Tony
Porsches still have that "cool" factor. You can't deny that, no matter how slow they are driven.
Special thanks to Tony for letting me drive the Porsche. Fun car, but NOT an autocross beast.

It was my pleasure.
It takes a while to get used to and is a bear to drive so I sympathise for Jesse.
It was also an enjoyable experience to watch the 930 going around the course from the outside.
Props to Jesse for getting a handle on the 930 after only a few runs and getting a time that beat most everyone elses at the auto-x.
After my car his MR2 will be a dream for him to drive.
Jesse also let me borrow his seat strap. That thing is great. I will definately be getting my own before the next auto-x. Its great to be laterally strapped to the top of one's seat.

Tony,
You are one of a few very lucky individuals. Jesse has a knack for getting into other people's cars and driving them more quickly than their owners are capable of. Some of us squeak by him after MANY practice runs (
whew!) others never do. You're the first I've heard of that was faster straight out of the box.

I've had years to figure out the 930's strange power and weight characteristics and Jesse had only several minutes. The fact that the car is not running very well only made the circumstances worse. All things concidered I think Jesse did great and while watching his last run it looked graceful enough to give him a chance to beat me in my own car.
Once I get all the work done to the car I am going to see if I can get Danny Sheilds to drive it so I can see how I compare. Danny certainly should be used to mid engine porsches so that will be the next interesting experiment for the 930 once the motor and gearing change are complete.
i dont think many ppl could beat me in the body rollin bastard if they were to drive it
to quote danny shields after he rode with me at an event at FSF "i dont think i could have done any better" that was his only advice as to how to run a better lap time cuz i was losin by a bunch to neil in his subaru.

body roll? I'm the king! From a Mustang GT (which appeared to have a lift kit, LOL) to the SS Too Heavy (the vic) I've got my feet firmly planted and the body's leanin all over!
But i know I can't beat you in your car for one simple reason. FWD is for sissies. (j/k) I've only driven RWD in autox.
I did drive Jesse's Protege on the semi-road-course-like-event at Ocala, but that was all driving RR lines and braking zones.
I would give Jesse props for the performance at martin in the 930, but you gotta stop giving a pat on the back when someone is beyond that level already. Take that as compliment enough.
