Default Palm Bay 9-22, Shawn got a trophy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

on his first time running his R1s!!!!!!!!! he took 2nd in H Stock!!!!(pwn3d a certain Focus in doing so ) Congrats to Shawn and his pathetic oil burning, down on power, did I mention pathetic?, Integra!!!!!!!

The 200 and I did rather poorly on our crummy street tires, found out that Mitsu placed "Ricer" wings on their cars from the factory in '99 , found out that Foci have NOTHING on SE-Rs from a stop....and their drivers don't give up even after being beaten repeatedly (we'll settle that at 1320 boys ), and the quote of the weekend:

Local Kissemmee Redneck to Alan in Focus: "Do you gots a Turbo in that thing! Its fast!!!" (he was driving what could only be classified as the saddest car in existance, which was soundly beaten by all three cars in our little caravan, even the Teg!)

It was a rather fun time to be had by all!!!

better hurry up.. i only got a couple more events left on my R1s, after which the teg will be retired from auto-x for good, and i will co-drive the nissan with anna for a while, as the CRX gets prepped.

learning curves, learning curves, i had to deal with it today.

i have some dozen and a half auto-x events, all on falken ziexes, and all but a couple with the front illuminas at 1, and the rears at 5, with front tire pressure of 44 and rear pressures of 38

i found a setup that works well for me, and i knew the car.

the R1s destroyed that relationship.. i had to dial the front shocks stiffer to help compensate for the stickier tires. since i used to have the rear shocks as stiff as they'll go, this reduced the oversteer.. so i had to relearn the car all over again (and try to re-adapt my driving style)

Congrats on the trophy!

I was owned by an SE-R at a rally cross last year. The interior was gutted and my Focus was stock with full interior.

The hot race set-up with VW's is a small front bar or no bar at all and a larger than normal bar is the rear. This causes more oversteer and better car rotation.

I've never used R1's, but do use Hoosier road race tires on my 77 Scirocco. Once they get hot, they stick Race Tires make a hugh difference.

yea, road race tires (vs autocross tires) are another factor of why i could do it.

due to the way palm bay is run, it was about an hour between each successive run. enough time for the R1s to cool off between runs. as a result i couldnt get maximum effective use of them.

but i still had fun:

The traction really isn't affected that much by the time between runs, but one thing I do to help with it and to also keep the track fresh in my mind is to run at the very end of 1st run then get back in line for the beginning of the 2nd run then do the same thing for the 3rd and 4th runs. I do this mostly to keep the lines fresh in my mind haven't really done it for tire temperature reasons.

I have a few friends, in Puerto Rico, that use drag radials during auto-x events. They heat up quickly and grip a lot. They use them to road race, but only for 10 laps or so as they don't dissapate heat very well.

James,
Do you have a red h/b? If so, I think i've seen you at Sebring with SAFE. I was driving a red Corrado at the time.

the track wasnt a problem.. the problem was tire heat

do not forget that kuhmo victorracer V700s were designed more towards autocross than the R1s

the R1s are road race tires so they do not have the heat properties that autocross tires do, they warm up more slowly..

Yes, I do have a red 97 h/b the last time I was at sebring there was a SAFE event going on the day before I did a Chin Motorsports event. I arrived early to check out the SAFE event and get the full use out of the hotel room at the Chateau. From what I recall this was last Dec. 8-9.

Shadowboy-I was suggesting you use this method for keeping a little more heat in the tires between runs on your first run they won't be all that sticky but if you get back on track in 5-10 minutes vs. 45-60 minutes you will see slightly higher tire temps. My friend has an 85' CRX which he occasionally runs at auto-x w/ the same tires as you and he uses this method to help traction a little bit.

james, i tried a different approach, but it didnt work
i left the site and drove up & down the main road in palm bay for a while at the speed limit to try and get the tires up to temp.. i tried to time it so i would come back to the staging line just in time to run, it didnt work out that way.

point is moot, i locked up the wheels under braking on my 4th run and flat-spotted the r1s... right down to the cords. so the teg is now officially retired from autocross duty.
