The little caddy that could...
No doubt, being "the underdog" is fun!
I'd hold off on the race tires for a bit longer, though. As you said, you're still learning. You'll learn more on tires with lower limits. Get better street tires for now, but stick with street tires. After you're sure you're wringing absolutely all that you can out of those tires, then you'll be ready to progress to race tires.
To combat your understeer problem, remember "slow in, fast out". Classic racing advice.
Hit me (or Jeremy or Charles or...) for a ride along sometime. You'd be amazed at the little things we can notice that will help you be faster.

I'll be at the next FAST event in St. Pete if you want to ride with me
I'm really not concerned at all because a.) I dont launch the car hard at all b.) I don't have any wheelhop issues, which is the main reason for grenading the diff and c.) I bought the car to drive it, not baby it and worry about the diff blowing up the whole time, and if having to buy a 06-07 $1500 rear-diff one day when it does go out, that's the price I pay for driving the car the way it was meant to be driven, just like any car that has a weak link.
I can't tell you of one car that I have owned, from my 1999 turbo civic SI to my last car, a 600rwhp Kenne Bell Cobra, that DOESNT have some kind of "weak link" issue. even with the well-documented differential-grenading issues on these cars, i still think they are absolutely incredible machines.
Touche, It would seem like coming out of most corners with irregular surfaces in parking lots your asking for the rear to slide & hook up. Incredible machine or not, AAA.

Have some fun! Nice pictures and hope to see you at an event or two...
