Default interested in starting auto-x in the future

I will be finishing school in May and will be able to afford some toys by then...I'm thinking about getting a cheap little project car to start auto-x...i know the miata is the standard for cheap cars, but i would like to get some other ideas for a good auto-x car

i was looking at possibly picking up an ef hatch or a saturn sc1

I am a noob to auto-x, sorry for asking this

You don't need a "project car" to autocross. Just bring your daily driver and have fun.

i don't think my x-cab s10 would be very good at autocross

i might just pick up some random car at first just to get some wheel time and get the experience, then once i feel comfortable i might upgrade

That's a better idea. And, as long as your S10 isn't jacked up, you could autocross it... and if you were up to the challenge, you could actually make it handle!

+1. I've seen some interesting modified small pickups turned into autocross projects.

If you're cheap-car shopping, pretty much any '80s-'90s Honda makes a good learner autocrosser, and if you decide you want to tinker with it, there are lots of options. Ditto Fox-body Mustangs and similar vintage Camarobirds; even the 3.8L V6 Camaros did pretty well as autocross cars.

Provided you can comfortably fit in one, it's tough to beat a beater 1st gen Miata on the cheap.

Just pick something and stick with it. Address reliability concerns, throw some decent street tires on it and drive it as is until you get more seat time.

Take a look at the Tacoma X-Runner, comes with sticky Bridgestone rubber, lowered ride height than the standard truck, LSD, etc. It can still tow 3,500 lbs I think but the oldest is 05' I believe.
