Default cash for clunkers passes

the basics are $3500 if you buy a new car with +5mpg and your old car is 10+ years and gets less then 20MPG if your new vehicle gets 5mpg more you get $4500..

Looks like Barry is now sitting on a small goldmine

while it's an energy stimulus over a economic stimilus... PLEASE at least consider an American car. well that's if you want your kids to have a country to call their own.

I don't think this bill is going to accomplish anything, most people that drive a clunker do so because they can't afford a new car or think new cars are a waste of $ period.

$4,500 isn't going to cover a $400+/month increase in monthly expenses for those people for 5yrs+

I think a few with $ or those on the fence about purchasing a new car will take advantage of this, but that's about it.

The clunker must also be registered and insured in your name for 1yr prior to being eligible.

They've also placed limits on the number of vouchers for cars vs large trucks that can take advantage of this deal. I guess once they're gone, they're gone.

On the truck side, improving 5mpg while being able to replace your "clunker" with something of equal towing ability isn't happening. My 99' 3/4 ton is rated at 14 combined so I'd need 19 combined which puts you in a 4cyl Ranger. Maybe older trucks fair worse on combined MPG, not sure.

Well, It may motivate me to look at a newer vehicle. My 99 Expedition seems to qualify. I just hate to give away a perfectly good truck for something questionable.. And I agree on making an effort to buy American!

"New-er" won't qualify, if so more people might take advantage of this.

The 99' may qualify, but can't you sell the truck outright for more than $3,500-$4,500 ? Book "trade-in" value is probably more too. If either of those are true, this makes no sense for you either.

I wonder how many hours the politicians wasted putting this together.

I meant new.... I'll have to do some reading... or just keep old faithful...

Yea, after reading the wording, it doesn't help me. Oh well. I was thinking trade in value + voucher = good deal.... I was wrong.

Trade in + voucher was my first thought too, but if the old car is getting dismantled or crushed the dealer gets $0 out of it on the "trade in" side.

Way to put the country in debt even more, I mean give the avg person 4500 to spend at a dealership, i doubt there would be a car there that cheap. So the buyer will have to apply for loans etc n go in to debt like how it all fuckin started.

"Buy American." Answer me this:

What is the percentage of parts made on any car built in America that were actually manufactured in America by American labor?

"Cash for Clunkers." Answer me this:

Where does the money come from with the high and still growing unemployment rate to trade in a reliable fully paid off low MPG "clunker" that gets you around to at least interview, the grocery store, your kids school, etc. for a new car payment?

Even those families that have jobs that are facing no pay raise and increasing costs of living can't possibly justify a new car payment.

And I laugh at the fact that my 19 year Honda Civic 3 dr hatch EF still makes 35 mpg when I can't think of even one 19 year old Domestic that can do the same.

Cash for clunkers, just another part of ego boy's plot to get America on its knees.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.
