Team 4 autoX or road racing?
Autocross is a "solo" sport. That said, pretty much EVERYONE who shows up at an autocross is your "team". Everyone helps everyone else. Ask questions, you'll get answers. Ask for driving tips, you'll get them. Ask for ride alongs, you'll get them.
Road racing is a little different. You can get into it by yourself, but it might be easier to pal up with some people who already know the game to get started. I always recommend that people start with autocross, though. You learn a lot about the finer points of car control in a safe environment with autocross. The same lessons learned on a race track can be expensive. (walls are harder than cones!)

You can join at an event or anytime on scca.com. It's like $75 and not worth it unless you enter more than 5 events per year for autocross.
I am not sure what an SCCA membership does for you on the road racing side.

Considering they do a lot of 2 day events, it doesn't take long to get 5 days in and make it worth your investment.
