Coning a switchback.
switchbacks are not used in autocross but since they are one of the most popular elements of rally I was wondering how to Cone them... Im going to try my ASCII art here... I was thinking having the entrance and exit side by side with just pointer cones then the next gate 90 degrees.

I need to slow the course down in places and a switchback is just the trick.

Barry has done something like this at the BMW autox's. What it really became was a heavy braking zone with a sharp exit. It did make the course interesting because usually you were headed out into the grass because after braking you made a 90 degree right then you had to make a sharp left to go to the next set of cones.
The cones Ralph designed for the last PCA before the end gate was interesting as well because it wasn't a go around. you had to enter, then cross through the two walls of cones and then exit out. It was a fun challenge.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

Not used in autocross? Not on airfield courses (no room), but I've seen 'em on sites with more open pavement. Try this and scale to your liking. You can box the whole 180 if you want -- that also allows you to make it optional direction -- doesn't matter which side of each double cone you enter on, so long as you exit on the other.
[edit] Nuts -- ACSII art didn't work. Basically, the apex cones are a double cone set spaced to define the length of the switchback. Completely or partially box the space around them to define the 180s.

I love the input, however I need to have the exit 90 degrees to the entrance. a double cone will do the trick, but I was hoping to give the driving feel of an old fashion mountain switchback

Forgive the ACSI . but I put a gate then a wall on the right side.. the cones on the right side are the #1 and the solid "____________" are the cones in the front of the car with the exit at the end on the right..
Then a wall in the front forcing them to go right..
