Default Driving Shoes

I typically drive in some old crappy shoes that just happen to be pretty light. However, yesterday I was at Brandon Town Center looking around at the store called Finish Line, where I saw these on sale for $29.99

I couldn't believe my luck. They actually sold a pair of DRIVING shoes there. Unfortunately, that particular shoe is just too narrow for my wide feet. It turned out they have 4 other brands of driving shoes made by Puma, Nike, Adidas and K Swiss! WTF? Who knew that the car culture has become so popular that the youngsters want to shop for driving shoes at the mall? Granted, you can buy some great driving shoes off the internet, but it sure was convenient to try on five different pairs of shoes until I finally found the ones that accomodated my feet properly.

Incidentally, are driving shoes supposed to be super narrow? It seems like the front pads of your feet should be as wide as possible to accentuate "heal toeing"?

Thanks for the heads up on this one, I live about 15 mins from that mall and I think I'm heading there shortly. I've been looking for something to replace my ratty "grass mowing" shoes but like you wanted to be able to try them on.

They have any 10.5's?

I need to get a pair myself. Most of the drving shoes I've seen are narrow, but I'm sure they have wide ones.

Well, in "real" race cars, the pedals are usually quite small and quite close together, so narrow is good.

It depends on how you heel-toe. If you actually use the ball of your foot on the edge of the brake, and use your heel to blip the throttle, then the width shouldn't matter much. I usually end up using the ball of my foot on the brake, and mashing the gas with the outside of my foot, so for me it's helpful to have a tread with a straight outer edge instead of a cut-in side like those...

It all depends on your pedals and your driving style.

Thanks for the heads up Rosko. I like the looks of those. Might have to do some shopping and retire my Chucks to grass mowing duty.
Charles, how do they feel? Are they nice and lightweight?

Yup, lightweight and thin which should give you better feel. They are out of certain sizes, like the 10.5 which would have been better for me.....

Thanks for the post! I just went to Finish Line at Tyrone Square mall in St. Pete and got a pair in 11. I asked for 11 1/2 and they had those but I opted for 11, so they at least aren't completely out of the shoe if anyone wants to try getting some. They unfortunately only had them in blue but they were only $24.99.

The closest to these shoes they had there were Puma's which looked nice but were $60 and up. There were some Adidas 'goodyear' shoes which I guess are for racing, but they were like $80 or something... no thanks.

Yes, they're supposed to be narrow. Unlike your typical street car, which is designed for aunt gertrude's uncoordinated hooves, race cars doesn't have 6 inches between the gas pedal and the brake pedal. The shoes need to be as narrow as possible to prevent your foot getting tangled between the pedals.

Also, if you look closely, these are marketed as a 'driving shoe' not as a racing shoe and as such, are not constructed of fire retardant materials and hence do not come with the safetu ratings required by sanctioning bodies. That's great if you want to look cool like the ricer wannabe's. It's fine if you're just looking to autocross, but it won't cut it if you really want to get shoes to race with.
