Default left foot braking.

From what I understand, this is just using the left foot to brake while keeping the right foot on throttle, to keep engine revs up?

Seems like a technique I should learn, as my engine needs revs badly to go anywhere.

Not Quite. In any given gear, engine rpm and road speed are directly related so if for example you're doing 50mph and need to slow to 40mph to negotiate a turn, it doesn't matter which foot you brake with, the engine speed at 40mph will be the same either way. In some turbocharged cars, LFB will allow you to keep the throttle open while braking which may help keep the turbo spooled up thus decreasing any lag the car might otherwise have. The main goal of LFB is smoothly transferring weight around the chassis while braking or accellerating.

very useful in FWD for trail braking while keeping forward momentum.

more useful in turbo applications where you can reduce the lag time by not getting totally off the throttle.

not that useful in a FWD if you know what you're doing.

if you know what you are doing youll do it in certain turns in FWD. trail braking a FWD sets you up with and earlier exit point while not loosing any speed. that means you are on the throttle earlier than most. its the same technique the shifter kart guys use with a solid rear end. but they also do it just to turn, but sets them up with and earlier on throttle exit point.

Again, it helps, but learning that particular skill isn't going to transform you from a moderate driver to an amazing driver.

And you can trail brake without left-foot braking. It's not the same thing.

I'd like to add that it can turn a moderate driver into an entertaining spectacle the first time he drives an MR2........

i thought you braked with the left foot in karts anyway, shifter or not (i could be wrong, i have never driven a shifter kart).

the advantage of left foot braking is, as someone said, a more rapid (yet still smooth) transition from brake to throttle and vice versa.

like Jesse said, it won't turn a moderate driver into a great driver. before LFB will help you, you need to have your technique and line down first. it's one of those last 0.01 second things.

me, i don't left foot brake. i'm used to using the clutch with my left foot so my instinctual response is to put the pedal to the floor as quick as possible. the poor part throttle driveability and stalling tendacy of my car has taught me to left foot brake for street driving though, so i am not as quick to slam on the brakes anymore when i use my left foot...
