Alpines Vs. OEM Equipment
I had some 5x7 Alpine Type-S speakers I found in one of my mustangs, so I decided they had to be better than the 6x9 factory speakers in my Dodges front doors...NOPE!
Well I ended up putting the cheap old factory Dodge speakers back in.. the Alpines sounded a hint more clear, but they sounded like crap when any amount of Bass went to them.. are they blown ? cheap? or is it the head unit doing that ? The head unit is also factory, but getting replaced next month.

I would say probably the radio... is it in anyway amped??
I had a set of Alpine Type S 5x7s in my old expedition and they sounded horrid with the stock radio.. had to max them out to make them even sound good..
Up graded to a after market radio and then turned on the high pass on the radio and they screamed..
and getting bass out of a 5x7 speaker is bad as it is.. get a sub if you want good bass response..

perhaps I will try them again when I upgrade the stereo.
The Alpines are reading 8 ohms on the bench test.
How were they mounted?? Obviously the 5x7's are smaller than the Dodge openings, so were they well sealed all around? Are you certain you wired them in polarity?

You should be able to get OK midbass response out of 5x7s, with that said, Luke is probably on the right track. Yet again they are type-s and everytime I heard them I wanted to cover my ears and run.
