If I have a sub that is rated at 1000rms and an amp rated at 2000rms.
Just say that they are both high quality products.
If I put the amp on this sub can I make the amp send around 1000rms to it?
Or I have to go buy a less powerful amp?

cut the gain way back and it should be fine, thats why i'm doing. jl 1000/1 hooked to a sub that only needs about 300 watts. sounds great and the amp never gets near warm

There are more factors than that Phand.
Such as what ohm load the sub is. What ohm load the amp puts out is max rms power. Does the company rate its power at 14.4 volts or say 12.5. What kind of box is the subwoofer in. Some companies, like kicker reccomend less power in a ported box. What kind of music do you listen to. These questions should be answered before matching up equipment, but rarely would reccomend that much of a difference. And by the way a GAIN CONTROL IS NOT A VOLUME KNOB! Jriggs this is not a shot at you,its just you see that in this forum alot and it is incorrect. Inexperienced consumers will read this then blow up thier shit and blame the equipment.

I just bought a Sundown SAE 1200d for my 2 10w6v2d4 sealed box built to specs.
The w6 can take about 400rms each. I am thinking of wiring this at 1 ohm.
At 1 ohm load the SAE puts out 1200rms i think at 12.5.
If all 1200rms go into the subs, it is going to blow.
I hope this can be done.

You would be safer wiring this to a 4 ohm load. That amp does well over what JL suggests for those subs. Me personally I would run it a 4 ohms untill I found an amp that matches.
And as an added bonus, running it at 4 ohm will make the amp sound much better and live a longer and happier life.

the only bad part about at 4 ohm is that the amp is rated at 300rms.
Sundown Audio SAE-1200D - SSA Car Audio Forum
I have 2 subs not one.
I have heard the sundown is a really good amp that is very stable even at .5ohm but it voids the warranty.
I also got 2yr warranty on it because it is new from an authorized dealer as long as I dont go under 1 ohm.
I think 1 ohm is good but I dont know if I can send it 800 watts and not the full 1200 watts that it is rated at.

Just My Opinion
I would not recomend this set up
They very well may be good quality amps and subs but they are not a good match for each other
PS
A gain control on an amplifier is an input sensitivity control designed to match your signal voltage input from your HU to your amp for optimal performance
it is not a volume control
There are definatly applications to over drive subwoofers but but to put 50% + more power to a subwoofer than it was designed to handle is suicide for that subwoofer

i messaged the owner of Sundown, Jacob Fuller
this is what he said
"You can turn the amp down, it does not have to produce 1200 watts all the time =)
You will just have to be careful and set it according to the limits of your subs."
I did not buy the amp from him, i just asked him for an advice on this and this is what he told me.
I keep getting mixed answers so I am trying to get the facts.

You certainly can turn it down to limit its output, you just need to be careful and be sure to set it up low enough to not destroy those woofers.
