The file size is compressed to a mere fraction of the size they would be on a CD. MP3, WAV, WMA are all non-lossless compression formats. FLAC and APE are lossless compression techniques. Unfortunately, most MP3 players and headunits do not support APE or FLAC.

I have always done it by ear also, but would like to know how to do it with a multy meter ...
