NEWBIE NEEDS HELP ======= basic explanation
OK, so looking to put a little bump in the trunk, stock system sucks.
Have a 1998 Toyota Camry, looking for something with good base and clear sound quality?
Anyone know what kind of speakers and amps and subs are best?
Opinions are fine

Polk DB midrange speakers driven by a polk 300.2 amp, A single Diamond D6 subwoofer driven by a polk 500.2 amp.
Polk are pretty good. I have Polk DB speakers and I like them a lot. They should sound even better in my new car because it has a better head, unit extra tweeters, and I will be installing subs to fill in some bass. I like Infinity a lot too.
Well you cant go wrong with kicker / memphis for sound for the money...Do 2 12's ported if u dont mind the room being taken up....or sealed for less room.....check out not the entry levels but the step up....cant go wrong.....I have made my living off lower level products ...Custom Edge Audio
Shoot out a budget-that will help out allot!

If there was any one brand of equipment that was "the best", everyone would have it. Go to a couple shops and take a listen for yourself.

Probably under $500 for the whole setup...
SHould I keep the same speakers in the car or change them out too?
see IDK how stereo systems work so I need an overview of what each piece does...
and wtf is a tweeter?

Decent head unit will run around $150-$200.
4 door/deck coaxial speakers of some name brand and decent quality will be $120-$200.
One or two good 10" subs and amp will be $300-$500.
That is basic parts only. Just for reference, a decent head to toe system usually runs $800-$1500 installed. This will usually give you a clean quality sound, decent quality electronics, and music you can hear and feel. It won't shake other cars in traffic and won't set any records but will make for a good commuter system that will be enjoyable.
Your best bet is to read up some on the internet (google will help on basic terms like "tweeter"). Then visit some shops and see/hear what there is out there.

woah sounds loke your starting from the absoult begining...
headunit: is the cd player, these are best for a start get one with rca (type of cable like what you use for dvd to tv connections) outputs this way you can run rca to the amp
Amp: more power to the speakers than the headunit can put out. 2 channel= 2 speakers, 4 channel= 4 speakers, 2 channel bridgeable means all power to one speaker abd so on.
speakers: tweeters are small for high pitched "high's" sound no base, subs are for low notes "base" mids are typically inbetween both
thats basically it, it can go much further but a simple system to sound good doesnt really need thousands of dollars, check on here or craigslist for good deals new you will always pay the most but used you dont really know what condition the items are in or what they have been through.
for you stock speakers in a newer car typically sound decent with a headunit, you can replace them but its kinda pointless unless you hook an amp to aftermarket speakers. in my opinion and experience a stock speaker powered buy a head unit and a aftermarket speaker powered by the same head unit sound pretty close to the same ( i replaced all my stock speakers with alpine type s and factory headunit and think it actually sounds worse) for nice clear stay with a cople 8 or 10" subs unless you want to car to shake get 12 or 15's
i had many systems but my most basic was a 4 channel amp, 2 channels ran to each of my doors to a component set (pair of speaker tweeter and crossover) the other 2 channels were bridged to a 10" sub i had clear mids/highs and a little bump. but i also have had a 1,000 watt 4 channel amp to all 4 speakers with a spare set of tweeters and a 1200 watt amp to a jl 12w7 which was crazy and i ended up selling it because it was too much for my taste
