gain is not a volume knob!

either short in the inputs or you have a problem on the board.

Sounds like problems with the inputs or RCA cables to me...remove the RCA's and see if it still happens.
Is the squealing noise coming through the speakers, or out of the amp itself?

one of the mosfets is bad - when mosfets partially fail from overheating or current overload, their current capacity is severely reduced. When you exceed that limit the mosfet no longer switches as it is designed and the result is popping, bumping, and a high or low pitched squeel.

+1^ Amp is probably not worth fixing. Most low to mid level amps aren't worth fixing anymore. That is why it is impossible to find companies that do it at all these days...

I've soldered new mosfets in from donor amps and it will work but it will never be as reliable as it was originally unless you use original parts. It is really fun though.

If you have a spare amp with similar rated mosfets, I would go for it. The only thing you really need to worry about is verifying that you swap NpN chips with other NpN chips and not PnP chips. Google is awesome for verifying that.

If you get them backwards you will get an awesome blue fire for about 10 seconds.

If you are using a JL, but it sounds like you don't want to spend the money on a matching JL amp, use one from their TMA line. They produce a 1000.1 that I have personally heard mated with a W7 and it sounds stellar. Price is pretty cheap also.
