the ports needs to be on the same face as the woofer - if not it will alter the phase of half of the stroke which will change as you approach the tuning frequency and that will make blah sound...

instead of pvc you can get cardboard packing tubes from the post office they are cheaper and easy to cut and try different port length. thats what i've used in my past boxes and they worked out great
and oups my bad on the thinking they were 15s, i didn't look at everything at 1st 12s should sound great without much "slop"

+1 on the trying shit out, you really want to get to know your system? try a bunch of different shit out, if you have the time, patience and money -- keep redoing it and get it to where you like it.
