ported or sealed
Generally, a ported is loud, sealed is tight. More specifically, a ported box is tuned to be extremely efficient at a given frequency but can be lacking in the wide end of the frequency spectrum. Where as a sealed box may have less output (volume) but will generally be much cleaner.
It really comes down to what subs you're using, amount of power, space available, and most importantly the type of music you listen to most.

yeah you would want sealed then.

You cant just throw a pipe into a box and call it a day for ported, as where sealed boxes are much more flexible with similar frequency responses.
Look at the attatched graph:
Using the MTX recommended enclosure sizes for sealed(yellow) and vented(green) enclosures, you get an identical response curve BUT the vented box gives you almost a 10hz lower response That is the extended range without loss of quality.
The blue was me messing with the ported specs. Its too boomy

Maybe at the given tuned frequency, but if you think overall a ported box has as wide of a spectrum as a sealed...you're
.

i just hooked up ONE of my subs in a sealed box built to specs, and its plenty deep for me

.There are no negatives to a properly built ported box with a properly designed subwoofer.
My d3 runs a flat curve down to 25hz with a curve that peaks at + .5db in a ported box. Even toby said he surprised at how flat it was.
