I recently bought an MB Quart 12" sub and not to long ago one of the coils got loose and the sub doesn't work anymore. Does anyone kno where i can go to fix it???

 

There have been several posts like this, and I've never seen a definitive answer. There is a place out on Hillsborough called The Speaker Exchange, and they used to repair speakers. Problem will most likely be that they can't get MB parts, so you won't have an MB sub anymore. Manufacturers like to handle broken stuff themselves, or through authorized repair shops.

What do you mean by 'loose coil'? Did it just come unsoldered from the terminal, or is this an internal failure?

I'm guessing there's alot more too it than just a "loose coil".

 

theres 4 coils that connect from the magnet to the sub and two of them are loose. If you push down on the sub itself it will work for a while then it comes loose. I checked it out and its definately a loose coil. Does sound advice repair subs or viper audio on dalemabry???

 

The coils dont connect to the magnet at all. And they are all wrapped to the same pole piece so two cant be lose unless they all are.

If you get rattling from one coil and not the other then the coil has an intermittent connection.

 

OK this is what i mean, wires that run from speaker connection unit, through the cone and into somewhere else that i can't see. Sorry if it didn't sound right the first time. But yeah the cable that runs through the cone is loose. And if you push that wire down the sub works and if its loose it wont. Anyadvice besides superglue. Trying to do this the best way or take it to the best places you guys kno of.

 

I think you're talking about the tinsel leads. They are repairable to an extent, depends on how bad they are. They can be soldered together or super glued to whatever if need be. It's worth a shot. And no, SoundAdvice does not repair equipment in house, however they may be able to send it out for service. I'm not too sure how that would work though considering they no longer carry MB Quart.

 

yupp easy fix. Your best bet is to scratch the wax off the line and resolder it. if the break is in the middle of the sub then pull the dustcap off, pull the lead through the hole, resolder, and use epoxy to reseal the tinsel lead hole and the dustcap.
