I could put in something like Pussy by lords of acid ( the bass mix) and it could be heard coming down the street. Now of course the highs and mids were on different speakers but when the bass hit it was in the higher bass range and a bit punchier, not the low hum that R&B can sometimes give. the sub was run off an amp that was switched to low pass only and I played with the freq cutoff so that I could get the desired sound. I also made sure that the wiring was done right, thicker gauge and twisted pair, not only on the rca connection cables but also on the speaker wire itself. Also avoid running it near any power source, and I made sure my ground and power connections were as good as it could possibly be.

The components that make up the system do matter to an extent, but you can give a $10,000 setup to someone ( amps, headunit, crossovers, subs, components, etc.) and let them hook it up, then give someone else a $2,000 setup and the cheaper setup can be done sounding better than the 10k setup. now this is within reason, Don't put an $800 w7 up against some paper cone 6x9 it's just not going to handle it. but I can take a wal-mart sub enclosure and with about $20 in supplies make it sound like a custom fiberglass enclosure. without making it too long, we all know that enclosures that flex and don't seal properly are not going to give you the best sound ( this is assuming a sealed and not a ported setup) so you need a chaulk that will seal the particle board at the seams, but something that won't crack so it needs to be flexible, then you need to fill up any tiny gaps or small pathways inwhich air can escape through a defective section of particle board...so you spray the inside with a few cans of clear varnish. this also stiffens the wood. Then use a rubber seal between the sub and the box.

I didn't have the best system around, but plenty of car enthusiasts heard it and couldn't believe it when I showed them it was one 12" and some shitty xplode speakers. like I said it wasn't the best...hell I have heard better. but for the cost and for what it was It sounded like a higher end setup.
