Default box tiime

got the treo and it needs a bigass box. this is coming off memory from what the treo guy told me. i wrote it down but i left it at my buddies. ill update when i get the exact measurements. but i beleive he said the box had to be 4.2 sq ft. and with a port 40 inches long. thing is i dont want the box to take up the whole trunk i had a cool design planned for the side panels on the left and right of the box. . just wondering if u guys could help me out with designing the box giving me different measurements i can use. i never built a box and this really isnt the best sub to go fuckin around with. ill probably have someone help me out with it. thanks guys again.

You're going to need more info than "40 inches long" for the port. You need to know the exact measurements of the port in order to tune it correctly. And as far as the box goes, if you're doing a simple rectangular shape, just experiment with some dimensions and use the formula LxWxH until you get it close to your requirements. Otherwise, if you're going with some funky shape, you can either wing it with a guestimate or make a sturdy mockup and then place a plastic bag (make sure there's no holes in it) and fill it water. Keep track of the amount of water you use and once it's full you'll know the exact volume. Either way, make it a tad larger than the recommendation to compensate for the sub displacement.

Like I said...take some measurements of your trunk to see what you have to work with. Play around with the numbers and use the formula length x width x height divided by 1728. That'll give you volume in sq. ft..

alright, went out and took some measurements of my trunk space that is available for use. its like 40 in wide, 18 in high, and roughly 21 in deep that hopefully will be enough space to use. might have to rethink the amp rack again but whatever. i got a cool idea of ram head cutouts in some plywood and covering it with plexiglass on the side panels next to the sub. so im going to subtract roughly 20 inches from the 40 inches. so i have 20 left to work with.

i ran some numbers with the formula and this is some measurements thatll work :

17x18x20 / 1728 = 3.54
16x18x21 /1728 = 3.5
17x18x21 /1728 = 3.71
17x17x21 /1728 = 3.51

should i make the box bigger than its supposed to be? only thing really irritated me is that the port has to be 19.5 inches in, why i dont know. whats the port depth have to do with the sound of it. unless im not really understanding the whole 19.5" in. port thing. im thinking from the face of the box the port has got to go back 19.5 in. but i should leave a couple inches also. little help on that one if u could. i made a little picture of what im thinking about doing.

lol. Are you trying to be sarcastic because you build your boxes out of plywood? I'm sorry, but ANYONE that knows ANYTHING about audio would laugh at you. Please go to any car audio shop and prove me wrong.
