Exclamation Setting the gains?!

Well i really want to learn how to set my gains the rite way. I have been reading how you can go to a shop and get it tuned but i dont want to pay. How could I do this my self and get it the best way. Rite now everything is one notch below half. I have the cross over bass boost and gain like that. I have the balanced input off and subsonic filter off. I am running sealed enclosures. Could i get ne help

without on oscilliscope..

turn your head unit to ~75 percent up
turn the gain on your 4 channel all the wya way down, put it in a cd.
slowly turn the gain up till the speakers distort, back it down just a bit
turn off the car
unplug the rcas to the 4 channel
turn the car back on, and repeat withthe sub amp
turn volume down, and plug 4 channel rcas back in

only reason I saw to not have the signal to the 4 ch is just to save any outside noises from interfering with the sub gains.

CAn you get a flute(sp)? Usally you want to set the gains so that you have bewteen 60-65 volts of output.
