5/6sp MT that bolts to a BOP bolt pattern?
Ever since i was scouting out a potential Trans Am back in 1996, i ALWAYS wanted to have a stick shift. but, i settled for the slushbox version because it was the cleanest, low mileage, least abused and best priced example of a 79 Trans Am 6.6L i could find. so, thats what i bought, and thats what i have. during the early years, i wanted to do mods to make it quicker which were simple bolt-on solutions. My wiring skills and fabrication skills were in their infancy. almost 10 years later, ive come to the realization that there really isnt anything to be afraid of when it comes to working on these cars.
so, now that i think about it more and more, i want to put a 5 or 6sp into my TA so i can have more fun with shifting gears... not to mention, an Overdrive that my TH350 doesnt currently have. I can retrofit the pedal set and linkages and such from the MT 2G F-bodies, so im lucky on that part.
im just wondering if anyone knows off hand if there are any 5sp or 6sp trannies out there that use the same bolt pattern as the Buick/Olds/Pontiac engines. Someone said the T56 shares the same bolt pattern and will fit up to my Olds 403, but i dont know how true this is.
does anyone have any info on this stuffs or even a 2G Firebird-specific forum? im already on CamaroZ28.com, but i think this is too Pontiac-specific for them to be of any help.
EDIT: i kept digging around and found this site;
http://h-body.org/library/hbodyfaq/hbodyfaq-10.html
the T56 from the 4th gen F-body is said to fit the 3.8 Series I block and other BOP V8's. now i just have to find a 4th gen parts car to steal all the stuff out of. i wish running clutch hydraulics was as easy as double-flare tubing but apparantly the T56 cluth stuffs are not the same. now i have to figure out what im gonna do about a Oldsmobile flywheel, clutch and pilot bearing. this is gonna be fun!

I was going to suggest the T-56 and the NHRA scattershield, I just read about doing the same setup on a 429 ford. I guess since they were used on Vipers, they pretty much can handle demanding shit from the get go.

yeah.... a T56 would be really niice. and considering my TA revs like a diesel, the 2nd OD would be awesome. there are many version of the T56 i think w/ different gear ratios and torque capacities. hell, id even settle for a TKO, those will handle some decent torque too. but, id be better off if i could find a 4th gen F-body 6sp and use that as a parts car. cuz then id have everything id need to put it in my car.

The 4th gen 3.8 wasn't a 6 speed, it was just a 5 speed. The V8's were all SBC pattern. You could get an adapter plate to go from an SBC to the BOP I'm sure.
You also may want to check out the Tremec TKO 500 and 600. They are only a 5 speed, but are rated at either 500 or 600hp (hence the name) and Tremec has really opened up the market by allowing like 9 different shifter positions, plus several types of throw out bearing arrangements and even bellhousings. You tell them the app, and they will sell you a "kit" with alot of what's needed. I think the kits would be about $1700 or so.

hey dave, thanks for the input.
i was leaning towards the T56 because its SUPPOSED to bolt onto the BOP bellhousing bolt pattern as well. i dont know about the TKO. i honestly would settle for TKO, but i dont know which production vehicles came w/ a TKO. i dont need anything as exotic as a T56... but i think itd be more cost effective to buy a broken 4th gen V8 car and salvage the entire 6-sp setup, including clutch controls and hydraulics. i could even cut the trans tunnel out of the 4th gen and weld it inplace of my 2nd gen tunnel. itll make room for the girth of the T56 over the TH350 thats in it now. if it comes down to it, i can hammer the thing out.

The TKO was never a production piece.
With the T-56, it would come down to someone either making a bellhousing for the swap or using an adapter plate.
The "bad" thing about the T-56 is that the F-body's used a revers pull throwout bearing and hydraulic clutch which would make a swap difficult. Most of the people using a T-56 in another application (even mustangs) have to use the Viper style T-56 since it has a traditional pull mechanical clutch. But as you can imagine, adding the word "viper" to any order is going to cost you.

Check these guys out:
http://www.ddperformance.com/
I think I'm gonna pick up one of those overpriced T56's for my car.
*Edit - Those guys take care of the adapter plate, mechanical speedo, mechanical clutch, and reverse lockout for you before you buy it.
