Default Registering a trailer i just bought?

Basically bought a trailer friday and need to register/insure it. Same procedure as registering a car? Insure the trailer first, then bring proof of insurance, bill of sale and trailer into to tax collector. Pay for title (if there even is a title to a homemade trailer) and tag. Does the tag cost 114 or whatever a new tag costs, alongside taxes and title fee.

Never done this before and dont wanna walk out of the DMV emptyhanded so if anyone could help me out it'd be appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as you. Here's what the DMV told me...

1. If the trailer was previously registered in FL then you need to provide the previous registration and license plate #. If can't provide either follow #2 guidelines.

2. If the trailer is homemade or hasn't been registered the the state of FL before then you have to take it to a DOT approved weight station and bring the bill of sale (if purchased), VIN# (if applicable) and a copy of the weight slip.

Anything trailer under 2000lbs you'll get pay a certain amount. Over 2000lbs the fee increases substantially.

The never told me that I had to insure the trailer.

Haha... I need to register my trailer this week too. 20' tilt bed car trailer just over 2200 lbs. Of course, I have a MSO, so It should be pretty easy.

You have to take your trailer to a weigh station (on the interstate where the semi's do it, or at a Flying J gas station) and bring that receipt along with your bill of sale to the DMV. You do not need to insure it.

I bought a 20 foot enclosed car trailer that had been previously registered to the person I bought it from in Clearwater. All I did was go to Hills. DMV with the signed title, they printed me a new title on the spot, gave me plate and registration sticker, took my money and I was done. I didn't have to bring the previous tag or registration info.

That's actually all you really need to do. Walk in empty handed. When I had to register my jet ski trailer, I registered it as "homemade". You don't need to bring anything in and it should only cost you MAYBE 20 bucks. Small trailers are very cheap to register.

Actually have the bill of sale and 2 previous registrations. So I'm set. New tag still cost 117 like for a car?

Well, you'll be paying for title transfer, you can pay extra if you want them to print you a new title on the spot or you can wait for it to be mailed to you, then the registration, tag, tax, etc. They don't care about the previous registration, they want to gets paid.
