abandoned 930 Porsche, one of 948 cars found
By Jeff Perez

Car people of Pittsburgh, listen up. Someone abandoned this beautiful little Porsche 930 Slantnose in a parking garage, and it needs some rescuing.
If you don’t remember, Porsche built just 948 examples of the 930 Slantnose in the early 80s — so finding one today is a pretty big deal. Problem is, the one seen here might not be an original, as noted on the original Reddit post. Either way, it’s still a cool car to come across.

According to the original poster, all four tires are flat, and it’s got a good amount of dust on it. No one is exactly sure why it was left the way it was, but with some quick research, one might be able to claim the vehicle under the right circumstances.
Move quick though, Pittsburgh, a lot of eager enthusiasts have their eye on this one.

Inet discussion:
Found an abandoned Porsche 930 Slantnose! (self.cars)
submitted 5 days ago by Un0rigi0na12003 Taurus SE Vulcan
Located near Pittsburgh. I Had to take my roommate to his doctors and parked in a really shady parking garage in a bad part of town. Stumbled upon a Slant Nose 911 only a few cars away and did not realize the significance. If i can render a guess Id say it had been sitting for a year or two. Tires are completely flat and surface rust has started on the underside of body. Can anyone give me more information or give me an estimate to value? I may try and find the owner and see what the deal is!

Get the vin and plates and see if you can send in info for an abandoned vehicle. If everything goes through its yours
Chances are it was either stolen, or (most likely) this belonged to an older individual who passed away and the car was never found.
[–]Un0rigi0na12003 Taurus SE Vulcan[S] 41 points 5 days ago
Can you legally claim a vehicle that has been abandoned? How does one do that?
[–]brown3jh 28 points 5 days ago
OP, it's too late, I already claimed the car. Just kidding, have at it.

Some quick googling. See if you can find out who owns the garage? If they can get hold of the car you may get it cheap.
[–]Un0rigi0na12003 Taurus SE Vulcan[S] 11 points 5 days ago
Thank you for providing that info. Ill see what I can do after break!
[–]ellevehc 9 points 5 days ago
Ive read into it a little bit, someone with more experience will chime in. It depends on your state. I think its called an abandoned vehicle affidavit. Takes a few months to go through.
Some states require that you get it "towed" first. But most towing places dont tow without title, because theft. And if you try to work something out with a sketchy tow youll never see the car again. Anyway, google around? Someone more knowledgable will post up.
[–]BiocideSinner 11 points 4 days ago
Getting it towed could be a simple as renting a car trailer and winch for a day.
[–]Private0Malley2003 Land Rover Discovery, 2002 Ford Mustang GT 2 points 4 days ago
And a truck if you dont own one.
[–]Jtbros2005 Saab 9-2x Aero (Saabaru) 4 points 4 days ago
Still not expensive, most U hauls near me rent f-150s
[–]irock168 1 point 4 days ago
Getting that in a garage might be a challenge though.
[–]BiocideSinner 1 point 4 days ago
Meh. Wheel dollies work wonders.
[–]Barely_stupid 1 point 4 days ago
You can't just waltz into a parking garage and snatch up any vehicle you think is abandoned.
[–]BiocideSinner 1 point 4 days ago
This is true but you probably could get the paperwork in advance and start filing it.
[–]Un0rigi0na12003 Taurus SE Vulcan[S] 4 points 5 days ago
I am extremely curious about this now. It seems like a thin line to walk seeing as how valuable these vehicles are and how it is parked in a parking garage. I am just worried about overstepping and taking something out of someone elses property. It has been abandoned for a while there, I'm pretty sure they know about it. Would the parking garage be owned by the city or a private entity?
[–]Undivid3d 3 points 4 days ago
You should be able to actually call the city and ask if they own the garage. If they do then obviously ask them about it and how you can proceed. If they don't, you're going to have a hard time getting that vehicle legally.
[–]LogicWavelength'08 Acura TL Type-S 6MT 2 points 4 days ago
If they left it for long enough for your states' abandoned vehicle laws to take effect, then that sucks for them.
I have done this before in NJ with a car that a friend left on my property and never came to get again. You can apply for the abandoned vehicle affidavit, as the above comment said. Now, since I was the property owner it was easier. You on the other hand, will have to work with the property (garage) owner to make this possible for yourself.
Your best bet is to explain that you want to buy it, don't tell them the price is any different from a plain 911 of that year, and that you will pay for all the fees encountered for them to assume ownership of the car. You will then buy the car from them for the price that you told them it's worth. If it all pays off, they will just see the oppotunity to make a quick (what are regular 911s worth, $10k?) buck, and not question your numbers.

what are regular 911s worth, $10k?
Older 911s are worth a lot more than $10k.[–]Denyborg -1 points 4 days ago
Is there any piece of accurate, factual information reddit won't downvote?
[–]CardCounter0 1 point 12 hours ago
It depends at what frequency the reddit hive mind happens to be buzzing at during that time.
[–]ellevehc 1 point 4 days ago
I have no idea.
It is something that is possible. Part of the process is that the "owner" of the car is notified that someone is trying to collect the car. If they dont do anything about it, its yours. Someone that would own that car from the beginning wouldnt just let it sit... I assume. Also I would try to find out as much as you can before contacting the garage or whoever. Since they own a garage they probably have an "in" on how to deal with these things, usually more knowledge, and just try to keep it for themselves. The world is not always a fair place
[–]0xBEEFBEEF 1 point 4 days ago
I don't agree at all that it's likely stolen or the owner is dead. Those seem to be corner cases to me. Even if one of these scenarios is the case, do you think the car could be claimed as yours?
I'd put money on the car just falling out of maintenance and the owner, for whatever reason, has not maintained it (no money, no interest, whatever).
[–]Neeecolas91 Mazda Miata BRG 21 points 5 days ago*
Not a Porsche expert here
If that was a true Slant Nose 930 turbo it's definitely worth a fair bit. The only problem is that the lights appear to not be the OEM. They're at least not the original Flachbau lights. They look similar to the lights on the 986. This car is very interesting, regardless of the lights.
Edit: 968 not Boxster headlights.

I am definently not an expert either haha
My Friend did tell me it was actually a more rare setup of lighting, I have no idea if he i right. Im going to agree with your assessment and assume it is aftermarket!
[–]Three_Fifty'86 911 Turbo, '08 G37 6MT, '04 Cayenne, '13 335i, '07 A4 9 points 4 days ago
It is indeed aftermarket. No slant noses were sold with headlights like those and even though some were sold without the louvers on the front fenders, it sort of confirms that this isn't original.
Did you check to make sure it's a real turbo? Often, people took older 911s and put slant nose body kits on them. It's the difference between $10,000 and $50,000 when it comes to this car. If it's truly a 930 then it may be worth $35,000+ just the way it sits.
If you see the car again, look at the gauges. The tachometer should have a boost gauge like this one. Also, if you look into the mesh part of the tail, you should see a black or silver rectangular inter cooler on the left side. If you go directly under the car where the left side exhaust exits, you can also see the turbo very clearly. Good luck with everything!

Slant nose should have pop up lights but these fail more than they work.

Not an expert just my 2 cents but my buddy had this happen. Some girl moved and just left her car on the street by the house. Contacted the city and they agreed to tow it to his house for "keeping" to avoid impound and after so many days he was legally able to file a lean and take ownership and a set amount of time after that. Simple re-key and new title and it was his. This was in California btw. Hope all goes well for you, could be a beautiful car with the right owner.
[–]DoomDash 6 points 5 days ago
Not as rare but there was this TII RX7 that was abandoned near my house for at least 9 years ( in apt complex ). Everyone locally knew about it who was into imports, and word on the street is the owner got really sick and was in some sort of home. It had a old school car phone and the old pepsi can in it!
[–]profinger 2 points 4 days ago
Hey, a fellow Pittsburgher! I know nothing about this but cool to find out there are other locals on here and good find!
[–]verdegrrlAxles of Evil - German & Italian junk 3 points 4 days ago
The factory slant nose was all steel, and cost something like $10K extra at the time (which was big money). These all had pop-up headlights to the best of my knowledge. The aftermarket stepped in with all manner of fiberglass conversions. These included the Strosek style rear cheese grater fenders.

This thread got me on a little research kick on the 930 and found the history to be richer than ever! The first slant noses were not from Porsche, but rather they had their start in racing in the mid 70s because the slanted noses gave more downforce while being more aerodynamic than the factory front end. The company that started making Slant Noses was DP Motorsport (Designer Plastics) and they did use fiberglass on much of their cars they built for Kremmer's 935s, even offering Carbon-Kevlar as well. Years after these became popular in racing and in aftermarket conversions, and after Porsche received many requests for the slanted nose 911s, Porsche decided to cash in and open up their own special order program on their body shop side where they'd take 911s off the production line and finish them as a slant nose in their body shops. This program was Porsche's Sonderwunsch ("Special Wish") program. I believe that program pretty much started Porsche's tradition for offering options-galore on every car they make. But even today, DP Slant Noses are usually more sought after than Porsche's own.

Given the condition it's in, it's probably not worth that much. A clean 930 turbo will sell in the 50kish range, and slant noses are worth less in general. Beyond that, this has some weird aftermarket stuff that most enthusiasts probably don't want.
Bottom line, if it runs/has a usable engine and minimal rust on the body, it might be worth 12-20k depending on year and spec if its non- turbo, and 20-30k if it's a turbo.
Edit: Looking closer, it seems like there's no passenger side mirror (and it doesnt appear to be one missing either). This would indicate that it's an older model (late 70s id assume), which brings the value down a little.

That would actually help my case. If I said I wanted to claim a $50K car my chances would probably be lower than if it closer to the $10K-$20K range.
[–]K1ngHenry 1 point 3 days ago
Fair point. If you determine its not a turbo (hell, even if it is), you should be able to convince the people you'd be dealing with that it's only worth 10k (or less) given the condition it's in and work needed. It's definitely gonna need more than just a jump to fire up.

Wrong wrong wrong. Just a bunch of wrongs in this post.
A clean 930 turbo will sell for around 100k with some bringing much more. A slant nose turbo will sell for 70-80k.
A base 930 will sell in the 30-40k range.

There are many reasons a car could be abandoned and the owner not know where it is. Divorce, prison, illness, "borrowed" car never returned, etc. This might (seriously) be one of my husband's missing cars, who knows? He lost three old cars. I'm going to ask him.

I've never even lost my car keys. How does a person lose three entire CARS?
[–]Un0rigi0na12003 Taurus SE Vulcan[S] 1 point 13 hours ago
I look forward to this. I would much rather find the owner and talk it out with them. My intentions were not to just take property of someone. I was really hoping to find the owner and hear the story of this car. I will update you when I get more info!

Ok, the parking garage would have to lay claim to the abandoned vehicle. It's on their property. The owner, or his/her family, if he/she would be deceased, would have the option of paying the storage/parking fees from the time the car came in to the present. If they relinquish the title to the parking garage, by law in Pa., the parking garage can only sell the vehicle for the money owed for parking/storage and obtaining the legal title work. It would be like a mechanic's lien. You take it in and don't pay for the work or pick it up, they file a lien and can only sell it for what they have invested. Not a penny more. So if it's been sitting for two years at a modest $24.00 a day parking fee they could ask a fee of $17,520.00 not counting legal fees. If you parked there to go to a Dr. appt. the owner may have too. A friend of mine from work got a phone call last December from a police station in Ga. to come remove his father in laws truck from the lot. It had been sitting there for a month! It seems the man drove himself to the ER, but died a short time later. They weren't close, he was a recluse. But the hospital had never notified the next of kin of his death! His body had been in the morgue for a month and the F-250 diesel sitting in the lot all that time! Police tracked them down only after the hospital complained about it sitting there and not being paid! They still didn't get paid after finding out they didn't notify the next of kin, the daughters phone number was on the admission sheet. But he still had to drive from here in Pa., to Ga., to claim his body and property. You can get the VIN and try a Carfax search depending on how old it is, or do a Porsche VIN check and see what it really is. Maybe the garage will be willing to strike a deal?

Looking forward to hearing how this ends!
