To anyone who doesn't understand the first and last actions of the movie. the germans dropped a wreath saying "to our friend and enemy captain clyde walker". who is presumably just a british pilot who they knew and wanted to honor. After the death of the red baron. the british did the same for him.. "to our friend and enemy, Manfred von Richthofen".

WW1 fighter pilot documentary from 1987 with interviews. Copied from 25 year old VHS tape.

This sort of behavior is due to an interesting bond shared between pilots across national boundaries. There is another true story of a German Me-109 pilot escorting a damaged B-17 back to England during WWII. There was even a general understanding that a damaged enemy bomber could let down their landing gear as a sign of surrender and be allowed to return home or land to await capture as POWs.



This was messed up by some pilots on both sides abusing this to coax enemy planes in for an easy kill. However, it did happen. Today I'll even watch documentaries comparing Russian and American air power in which pilots on both sides will practically seem like friends. Despite being potential enemies who must fight and kill one another, they don't look forward to it. They share a bond as fellow aviators. They are enemies and they will do their duty, but they are still fellow aviators.



It's a comradeship that's pretty unique to the air forces. Going back to WWII (my specialty, even though this movie is set in WWI), even Luftwaffe POW camps tended to treat prisoners much better than their army counterparts, the SS.

During WWI, the first pilots were seen as modern knight engaging in one-on-one fights in the clouds. Manfried von Richtofen was, and is still is, one of the greatest pilots in history. Tallying over 80 kills, he was the German Ace of Aces, to use the American term. He is credited with being the father of the modern fighter and interceptor tactics. Though the history books say that a Canadian pilot shot him down, it was an Australian AA gunner that killed him. He was one of the only known German pilots buried by the British, French, and Australians with full military honors. The pity is that his plane was ripped apart for souvenirs. It would have made an incredible museum piece.

Manfred von Richtofen was a child of the lesser nobility, with the typical Junkers social attitudes. He found it a 'game' at first, but became a deadly serious hunter once a friend or two were shot down, and he realized he could be killed. He utilized Boelcke's Dicta very well, at a time when Germany had technical superiority. In the end, he was a casualty of 'combat exposure,' where a pilot is burned out to begin with and has spent too many hours in combat. At some point the odds run out. All that is in Heaven Is Too Far Away, a WW I memoir and historical satire.

In tears right now after watching the movie. Salute to all pilots who died in World War 1 be it from anyside. Dam emotional right now. Remembering my mother who died of Cancer last year. She is not here to weep my tears anymore nor is my uncle who died during the 1965 India Pakistan war. Got more emotional and touchy after watching The Last Flag Flying. To our friend and enemy, Manfred Von Richthofen. Beautiful Flowers grow on the battlefields where heroes fall and die.



Sometimes good men die in war and there is no time to weep and mourn the dead - Sam Nigam (I dedicate this movie to my dead hero uncle who died fighting the Pakistanis in 1965 War. He has 70 confirmed enemy kills. In war you only win dead bodies and medal is a token over those bodies. Died while stepping on a land mine when a soldier from his platoon was missing in action in the last days of the war. He was a fan of Elvis Presley, Beatles and US Army. He died at the young at the age of 24. Died fighting for motherland India.)

Many years ago when I was about 21 years old as a junior industrial trainee chemist in Australia, I was assigned to work with and get experience from a experienced senior chemist who was in his late 60's. As we worked together we built up a mutual trust and respect for each other, one old man and a young boy. He told me about his experience in the Australian allied forces in France in world war 1 and all it's horror.



He said Martin, I want to show you something and opened up his wallet and pulled out a piece of old wrinkled red painted canvas and said "it is a piece of the Red Barons plane that me and other troops shot down as he flew overhead, have you ever heard of him?" This old mentor's name was Bruce Oliver(now passed away) and this blog is in memory of him and all the Australians who served in WW1,including my own uncle who never made it back home.

While much of this film is fiction or conjecture, there is no doubt that Manfred Von Richtofen was one of the finest combat pilots of all time. This film offers us a chance to see him as a person, not just a figure in a history book. We tend to see historical figures from a two dimensional perspective. Men are neither as good or as bad as the history books portray them.

a brillient war movie and from the german perspective, sadly a perspective not often shown. As an Australian i am grateful to hear that the australian infantry man has been properly credited with the red barons kill, and how fellow my countrymen and other allied forces gave Manfred von Richthofen the full respect he deserved in death. Also with confirmation that the red baron was hit by ground fire, this means he died undefeated in air battle. Lest we forget ALL lives lost in war time, on both sides.
