This film somehow missed my radar all through the years, but it's exceptionally well done. Bruce Davison is completely convincing in his role; his German accent is spot on. When I was younger, I never really liked Kristy McNichol, but now I realize it was probably only juvenile envy. We're only a couple of years apart agewise, and likely as a teenager I was envious of all she had already accomplished at such a young age. I can appreciate in retrospect what a talented actress she was. She had fantastic range and seemed completely convinced of her capacity and abilities even as a very young person. This particular performance, along with her appearance in the television film "Love Mary," really showcase her capabilities. Thank you for sharing this excellent film.

I saw this movie when I was in 13 years old. My mother was just like Patty's dad. She was mean, and seem to take pleasure in hurting my feelings. I remember her telling me that she didn't know what horrible thing she did in her life to deserve me as her daughter. However, after watching this movie, I remember thinking that my mom's words didn't matter because she was irregular and didn't love me. This movie made such a huge impact in my life.

This movie was a big deal in 1978 when I was 11. The book was a best seller and all the English teachers were talking about it and recommending it. It was not on the school reading list but because the book had won and award and was so popular one of the teachers got a copy and lent it out to those who couldn't buy the book and we did talk about it in class.

All the girls were reading the book and talking about it after school then it was announced that they had made the book into a movie and all my 11 year old friends were very excited about it! I still remember riding my bike to the park with my best friend at the time and talking about the book and the movie. We both had terrible crushes on Bruce Davidson! This movie brings back a lot of memories!

This is a prime example of what a first rate tv movie should be. Excellent performances by all involve particularly Kristy McNichol, Bruce Davison, and Emmy winner Ester Rolle! I saw then when it was originally aired in 1978 and never forgot it. I then read the book and it was wonderful as well. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to see this excellent film again!!!

Thank you very much mattpalm for this upload. I always loved this movie and not sure if Netflix has it in stock...I read the novelization in class as required reading...Such fantastic characters. I know I may have felt like Patty did at the time. I wonder why her father was such a hard-ass in the story? Michael Constantine did a great job portraying the Southern gentleman role of the 40s but he forbid Patty from hanging out with Freddy because he was not of the same social class. Sharon is apparently his favorite. Poor girl, no wonder she felt alone and lonely.

Then Mr. Bergen disowns her for harboring a fugitive POW. Who also happened to be the best friend she ever had. It could have been more than friendship had Anton not been on the lam. Sad, the way the small-town folk looked at her with scorn. I have to realize that this was just the culture of the times. Ruth was a great lady more nurturing than her real mother. Outstanding story altogether.
