Kyle Busch's pit crew change 'necessary' for title shot

Kyle Busch says the decision to swap his pit crew with the No. 19 crew going into the playoffs came down to speed and consistency.


"My guys, they would have speed, but the speed that they had was occasional and the consistency that they had was less than stellar," Busch said during NASCAR Playoffs media day. "When you can have a faster group and their consistency is better there's no question you got to take that."
Rookie Daniel Suarez was the only Joe Gibbs Racing car that did not make the playoffs, which made the move easier. The announcement of the switch came Tuesday, and Busch doesn't believe there will be any challenges working with a new group.

"When you're in a performance-based business it comes down to performance and for us and Joe Gibbs Racing, everybody in the organization kind of decided it was a necessary change to give ourselves the best opportunity to go race for a championship," said Busch. "With all these guys, all these teams as good as they are, you got to have all the bullets in the chamber and we feel we were a little bit short there with the pit crew.
"We've got metrics and all that to show that they were just a little bit off, not far, but a little bit, and when you need it most you're going to need to count on those guys, and that could be the last stop at Homestead. Fastest pit crew wins. Hopefully."
The 2015 series champion, Busch and crew chief Adam Stevens returned to Homestead-Miami Speedway a year ago looking to for back-to-back titles. Busch fell short and finished third in the points.
After a slow start to this season that saw Busch go winless until July, he's been one of the most consistent and fastest drivers in recent weeks. Entering Sunday's race, Busch has two victories in the last six races and has finished no worse than 10th. But while he believes he has the people and equipment to win the championship, Busch knows exactly what he's up against.

"I still look at the 78 [Martin Truex Jr.] - there's no question why you put him ahead of us. The reason I say that is because if you look at every single race through the year, maybe one or two instances here or there, Truex is first or second, or first, second or third," Busch said. "And you look at [Kyle] Larson. If Larson's not first, then he's like fourth to eighth. I feel like us, if we're not first, we're fourth to sixth.

"Truex is always first or second," Busch continued with a small laugh. "His average is always higher than what ours might be. If we're having an off day, our off day is sixth to eighth or whatever it is.

Larson's off day is sixth to eighth or whatever is. The off day for the 78 is like, second. That's just how good they've been."
