[h=2]Ganassi 'taken aback' by Patrick Indy reaction[/h] Wednesday, 06 December 2017

By Marshall Pruett / Image by Logan Whitton/LAT

8.7k Shares

Two things were made clear during NASCAR's season finale at Homestead: Danica Patrick wants to close her career next May at the Indy 500, and Chip Ganassi Racing looked like the most obvious candidate to facilitate that dream. Speaking with RACER on Wednesday, Ganassi wasn't ready to say it won't happen for her in his Honda-powered team, but don't be surprised if Patrick continues the search for a competitive IndyCar ride elsewhere in the paddock.

"I was a little taken aback by how much was made of it," Ganassi said of the reaction to his discussions with the former IndyCar star. "Folks would like to see a lot of things. First and foremost, things like that have to make business sense to all the parties. I don't want to discourage the idea, but I think it's a small percentage of something happening. There's nothing imminent."
CGR will run four-time Verizon IndyCar Series and 2008 Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon and 2017 IndyCar Rookie of the Year Ed Jones in its downsized open-wheel effort next season. Plans to field a third driver for the Indy 500, barring the acknowledgement of talks with Patrick, have not been announced.

[h=1]Danica Patrick: Finding rides for Daytona, Indy 500 ‘taking longer than I’d like’[/h] Daniel McFadin,NBC Sports 8 hours ago

Danica Patrick says the search for rides in the Feb. 18 Daytona 500 and May 28 Indianapolis 500 is “taking longer than I’d like it to take.”

Patrick, the former Stewart-Haas Racing driver, announced in November prior to the Cup Series finale in Miami that she would retire from auto racing after competing in the two races. Patrick spent the last five years driving for SHR in NASCAR.
In an interview Thursday with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio’s “The Morning Drivepromoting her new book, “Pretty Intense,” Patrick discussed the struggle to find teams to partner with for the two races this year.

“It’s taking longer than I’d like it to take, I’ll be really honest with you,” Patrick said. “I thought it was going to be a quicker process. You can’t rush things. I’m a big believer, more and more all the time of letting things flow and letting things take shape in the way that they would. That’s kind of why I ended where I ended with finishing up (my) full-time career last year and doing the Daytona 500 and Indy 500 for this year.

“I didn’t push anything and I let things flow and it turned out to be just perfect. Honestly, I’m excited and just so grateful.”
Patrick, 35, has made six starts in the Daytona 500 and won the pole for the 2013 race, the first woman to do so. She competed in IndyCar from 2005-2011. In seven starts in the Indianapolis 500, her best result was third in 2009.
“Everything I do outside of racing is because of racing,” Patrick said. “I’m well aware of that and I’m so fortunate that I get to go into these other ventures and have a platform to do it. But I am excited about them. I’m so glad with the way it all ended up working out.

“Similarly with the teams I’m going to race for, or the team, in NASCAR and in IndyCar. I’m pushing politely but you can’t make things happen before they’re ready to happen. I kind of thought it would get more simple. There’s less people involved, less sponsors, less things. Well, it’s still complicated. It’s just taking a little bit of time. Hopefully we’ll have something to announce soon enough.”

GoDaddy to back Patrick's Daytona, Indy entries

Thursday, 18 January 2018

Kelly Crandall / Images by Levitt/LAT

1.2k Shares
Danica Patrick will end her motor sports career competing with a sponsorship she's most recognized for – GoDaddy.

The company announced Thursday it will back Patrick's ventures in both the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500. The effort has been called the "Danica Double."
GoDaddy has been a supporter of Patrick since 2006, when she was competing in the IndyCar Series. When Patrick made the move to stock cars in 2010, GoDaddy followed, and was Patrick's primary sponsor until 2015. As the face of the company, Patrick appeared in 13 GoDaddy Super Bowl commercials.
"This is definitely the way I want to finish my racing career – at these two iconic races, backed by my iconic, long-time sponsor," said Patrick. "GoDaddy was there for me when my career was just really starting so it's exciting to be getting back in the GoDaddy 'green' for my final two races.
"Our brands have always been powerful together, and I think it's awesome to have them at my side when I go 'all in' with my business after racing."
Patrick still has not announced the teams she will drive for in either race. She expressed earlier this month how things are progressing slower than she'd like. Her list of options became one less last week as Chip Ganassi Racing president Steve Lauletta revealed that CGR is out of the running to field Patrick in either race.

It was November when Patrick announced she would no longer be competing full-time in NASCAR after five seasons at Stewart-Haas Racing. She became the first female to win a pole in NASCAR's premier series when she captured the top spot in the 2013 Daytona, and her best finish in the event is eighth.
In the Indianapolis 500, Patrick made her mark with two top-five finishes in seven starts. Patrick has led 29 laps in the event.

"You could say, 'we're getting the band back together,'" GoDaddy chief marketing officer Barb Rechterman said. "It makes sense in that our goals are so well-aligned – she's passionate, tenacious and creative just like so many of our customers who are also looking to leverage the power of the Internet and turn their 'side hustle' into a full-time business. Danica absolutely epitomized the heart of our GoDaddy customers. We love it."

Danica's legacy? It's complicated

Tuesday, 20 February 2018

By Kelly Crandall / Images by Kinrade/LAT & Levitt/LAT

My sister hates racing. She can play soccer with the best of them, manage an NHL team from her living room, and has a comfortable life of associating with guy friends over worrying about clothes and cocktails.
But racing? If she's not making a comparison to watching cereal float around a toilet bowl, then she's trying to get someone to change the channel.
Here's the kicker: my sister would ask how Danica Patrick was doing.
It is complicated and yet perfect at the same time, because that's what Patrick's NASCAR legacy is: complicated.
Classified 35th in the Daytona 500 after being involved in one of the many big accidents, Patrick has officially exited NASCAR stage left. For those who believe Patrick's career was full of bad luck, it was fitting that the end came through being caught up in an incident not of her own doing.
Alternatively, it was just another unremarkable day for a driver who, when came to on-track performance at least, did unremarkable things during her five full NASCAR seasons.
No wins and just seven top-10 finishes. Sixty-four laps led in 191 starts. Never finished higher than 24th in points.
Although Patrick went out with a whimper, she came in with a bang. Patrick became the first female to win a pole in NASCAR's premier series when she topped the board for the 2013 Daytona 500 (pictured above). She is also the only woman to lead laps in the Daytona 500 (also in 2013), and with an eighth-place effort (yes, in 2013), the highest-finishing female.
Analyzing her overall body of work in the sport, those Cup numbers, as well as 61 Xfinity Series starts with seven top-10s, one top five and one pole, you might ask, what did she really do? For all the fanfare and media attention that constantly enveloped Patrick, there was little that warranted it when it came down to the business of delivering on track.
"What I came to [realize] in the end was, I'm honored there was disappointment," said Patrick in a recent ESPN story. "I'm disappointed because it meant you expected more, and I did too, right? You saw me through my eyes. You saw the potential. You hoped for what I hoped for and believed it was possible."
Yet as one of the world's most recognizable athletes, Patrick did make an impact in NASCAR. See, I told you it was complicated.
Saluting Patrick ahead of her final race in the driver/crew chief meeting this past Sunday, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer Steve O'Donnell also used the word 'impact'. You hear that same word associated with her name all through the garage, and in the press.
Since the first NASCAR national series race that Patrick ran in 2010, there have been eyeballs on her, and subsequently on the sport. Plus, she brought a pre-established fan base with her from IndyCar; fans who were going to watch her regardless of what she drove.
Over time, however, Patrick became a role model and a superstar for NASCAR's younger fans, and undoubtedly for little girls. When making my way down pit road before a race, I knew I could count on seeing young girls standing by Patrick's car. They just wanted to see the No.10, and perhaps even be lucky enough to get a glimpse of the driver. Those who did would smile as if at Disney World. And the young fans, boy or girl, who were ever lucky enough to come across Patrick in the garage or at an appearance, had their day made by getting a hug.

Jimmie Johnson
Johnson is just one of many who have taken to social media to express what Patrick has meant to them and motorsports. NASCAR president Brent Dewar responded to Patrick's goodbye tweet with, "Thank you Danica!!"

"NASCAR's most successful female" is how Mike Joy repeatedly referred to Patrick during Speedweeks. And Daytona 500 honorary starter, actress Charlize Theron, provided an idea of how Patrick has been an attraction outside of the racing world.
She's incredible, and to have her be part of this, as a woman, that just seems pretty incredible," Theron said. "For me to be able to witness her last race, that feels very special to be here today, too. The girl in me secretly is, obviously, cheering for her as well.
"I just love that even my kids were really impressed that a girl was racing cars today, too. They think that's such a good thing, and we need more of that, and hopefully, we'll have more of that enter this culture, which only makes it better and richer."

My sister may not have been converted to a die-hard race fan because of Patrick, but Patrick made her aware enough to pay attention when a race was on – and even buy a Patrick hat at one point. Just last year she asked me to get her to a race to experience the garage area, and one of her first stops was Patrick's hauler and car.
Now that Patrick is gone, what she did or didn't do on the track will be forgotten by many. But my sister and everyone like her will remember that she was here.

Although the weather in Indianapolis postponed this week's scheduled first test run for Danica Patrick at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with Ed Carpenter Racing, the team took the opportunity to show off the No. 13 GoDaddy Chevrolet in which Patrick will make her IndyCar comeback this May. It will be the IndyCar and NASCAR veteran's final race prior to her retirement from driving.

Patrick's first laps at Indy since 2011 will now have to wait for the rescheduled test on May 1-2.

[h=1]Patrick, Bell Racing USA create special helmet for Indy 500[/h]

By: RACER Staff | May 1, 2018 10:00 AM

Bell Racing USA has partnered with Danica Patrick for the final race of the “Danica Double,” the Indianapolis 500.
As her racing career draws to a close, Patrick is coming full circle and ending her career in a Bell helmet – the same helmet manufacturer she began racing karts with as a young girl. When Patrick straps in to compete in the Verizon IndyCar Series at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, her helmet will feature a paint scheme that combines design cues from both her very first helmet and her most recent one, as Troy Lee Designs created a true masterpiece that encompasses Patrick’s career, from beginning to end, as a fierce competitor and a barrier-breaking racecar driver.
Patrick will embark on the final chapter of her racing career this month with the iconic GoDaddy green on her car and a state-of-the-art Bell helmet on her head; brands that have ridden along with her in many phases of her career.

“We are proud that Danica Patrick will wear the innovative Bell HP7 Evo II in the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500, and will finish her remarkable racing career in a Bell Helmet,” said Bell Racing USA President and COO Kyle Kietzmann. “Recognizing her racing talent at an early age, Bell was Danica’s first sponsor, providing product support throughout her IndyCar career. Bell has been with Danica for many of her defining moments as she reached the highest levels of motorsports, transcending the sport as an icon, role model, and entrepreneur. It is fitting that she will conclude her ground-breaking career using the legendary Bell brand and driving for Ed Carpenter Racing in pursuit of the Borg Warner trophy.”
“Everything has come together better than I could have imagined to close out my racing career at the Indy 500,” said Patrick. “Everyone at Bell has been so supportive of me over the years – all the way back to my go-karting days – and it just feels right to be partnered with them again as I compete in my last race.”

Default Danica deserves her place in IndyCar history Image by IndyCar share tweet email By:

sharetweetemail
By: Robin Miller May 18, 2018 8:00 PM When Danica Patrick drafted past Dan Wheldon and into the lead of the 2005 Indianapolis 500 with 10 laps remaining, the noise was deafening: 250,000 people stood and roared as this ballsy 100-pound pixie had the boys on the ropes. It didn’t matter that Wheldon re-took the lead with seven laps left and Patrick ended up finishing fourth, because her life would never be the same. She had become a household name in the matter of five minutes. Newspapers, magazines, sports talk shows and late night hosts trumpeted her success, and for the first time in two decades, an IndyCar driver was back on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Danica became a one-word celebrity overnight, and open-wheel racing suddenly had a pulse again in the United States.Little girls and women with absolutely no interest in auto racing began paying attention. And plenty of men sang Patrick’s praises as they were buying her T-shirt. The attention and press was overwhelming, not so much to Danica, but to some of her competitors and people in the IndyCar paddock. They originally loved the fact she’d put IndyCar back on the map, but that enthusiasm quickly turned into jealousy on several fronts. For the next couple years she was the focus whenever IndyCar came to town, and the underlying grumble was that she hadn’t done anything to deserve that kind of coverage and until she won a race it was all hype. Then when she won in Japan in 2008, the critics all said, big deal, it was a fuel mileage victory and, besides, Roger Penske ordered Helio Castroneves to slow down so she could win. (Honestly, I heard that 100 times). When she headed for NASCAR in 2012, IndyCar didn’t try to stop her ,and the general feeling seemed to be good riddance instead of good luck. There didn’t seem to be any middle ground – people either adored her or loathed her, and she was more polarizing than popular by the time she left. Of course, the main complaint was that she got way too much publicity and didn’t deserve half of it. She was just a pretty face, but not a race driver. She was hyped to the heavens, and not hell on wheels. Her entire resume was a few laps at Indy, and she only got up there because of strategy.
Fans, 2011 Indy 500. Image by LAT
First of all, it wasn’t her fault that sportswriters and TV folks clamored for interviews. Or ran her photo. Or acted like she was all IndyCar had to offer. Did she take advantage of her status? Damn right she did, and whether it was national TV commercials or print ads, it was indirectly drawing attention to IndyCar it would have never received. I was in a restaurant one night in Kansas City and heard a few guys discussing their weekend plans. They were NASCAR fans, but they reckoned they ought to go check out that “little sweetheart on the GoDaddy commercials”.I always found it funny that even some of the people in my business barred their fangs at the mere mention of her name. The “Queen of Hype”, they called her. Other than leading a few laps at Indy, what has she ever done? And that brings us to today’s sermon. I don’t care if you adore her, think she’s bitchy, got mad when she didn’t sign an autograph or became an IndyCar fan because she was nice to your kid in the garage area. But don’t tell me she wasn’t a racer.Sarah Fisher is the first female that drove an IndyCar who wasn’t afraid to mix it up with the boys, and her short-track mentality served her well. But Danica was the first female IndyCar driver that acted like a guy. She had a little chip on her shoulder, and didn’t take s$#@ from anyone. Those years in England when she was a teenager racing Formula Fords without mom or dad around gave her an edge that she never lost. So when somebody says she never did anything besides her five minutes of fame at Indy, I know either they don’t like her or don’t know what they’re talking about. Or both. Her drive in 2005 at IMS isn’t even in her Top 10.
Patrick vs Kanaan, Homestead, 2010. Image by Webb/LAT
So humor me and follow along:
  • In 2010, she and Tony Kanaan waged one of the fiercest, wheel-to-wheel duels I’ve ever seen at Homestead in the closing 10 laps. She ran second, T.K. was third.
  • In 2007 at Texas, the scariest/hairest place IndyCars have run on since Langhorne, she traded the lead with Sam Hornish, Ryan Briscoe and T.K. before finishing third.
  • In 2007, she finished second at Watkins Glen and drew praise from Paul Tracy (“that’s a badass race track and she was impressive,” he said later.)
  • In 2009, she started 10th and finished third at Indy behind Helio and Wheldon, but ahead of Scott Dixon, Will Power and Dario.
  • In 2010, again at Texas, she chased Briscoe to the checkered flag and took second place.
  • She ran fourth, fourth and fifth at Milwaukee, which has always been known as a driver’s track.
  • In 2009, she went from 22nd to fourth at Long Beach after The Split had been mended.
  • In 2008, she finished third at Chicago and Kansas.
  • In 2007, she made a couple of late passes to take third at Nashville.
  • At Motegi, she became the only female to ever win an IndyCar race.
Her average finish at Indianapolis is 8.7, but she’s scored a third, fourth, sixth and a pair of eighths in her seven starts. She finished fifth in the 2009 point standings, and was only out of the Top 10 once in seven years.I’m not saying she’s a first-ballot hall of famer or should be mentioned alongside the likes of Castroneves, Dixon, Franchitti, Kanaan or Power, but she sure as hell proved she belonged in an IndyCar. She’s also going to be in the history books forever because she earned it. And, yeah, yeah, I know, she’s received way too much publicity this month for somebody who turned their back on IndyCar. Really? She did what lots of guys have done, she chased the money (and she caught it).It is too bad she didn’t stay in IndyCar from the standpoint of being competitive, because her NASCAR career was a bust (like many open-wheeler drivers before her) but she did make the right choice to retire at where it all began. I’ve got no idea how she’ll do in the race, but it doesn’t matter. Danica and Indy will always belong in the same sentence.

By: RACER Staff May 23, 2018 7:34 AM Danica Patrick may be set to end her racing career in Sunday’s Indianapolis 500, but her prominent place as a public figure shows no signs of slowing down. ESPN has announced that Patrick will become the first woman to host this year’s ESPYS, thereby breaking another barrier when she takes the microphone for the network’s 26th annual awards show July 18 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.“My first ESPYS was 2005, and I have been a fan, coming back every year since,” Patrick told ESPN.com. “It is the biggest night of the year for sports. Every year, I leave feeling so inspired! I am excited to be able to help celebrate, laugh and cry about the past year in sports with everyone. It’s going to be a great night and one full of more than a few surprises.”Patrick will start on the inside of Row 3 in the Indy 500 in her GoDaddy Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet, in what is scheduled to be the final race of her career before retirement. Teammate Ed Carpenter starts from the pole.

Default Harsh early end to Danica Patrick's final Indy 500

Harsh early end to Danica Patrick's final Indy 500

By: Mark Glendenning May 27, 2018 11:55 AM Danica Patrick’s swansong race came to an early end in Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Turn 2 barrier on Sunday.Patrick had been battling with the No. 13 Ed Carpenter Racing car’s handling for much of the opening phase of the race, and was running 16th when the rear of her car stepped out and put her into the wall on Lap 68.“Turn 2 did seem a little bit more edgy than some of the other corners, but I can’t say that at that time I felt like I was on the edge,” she said. “It just swung around when I recommitted to the throttle after a bit of understeer. It was totally unexpected.”Patrick made a brief, emotional and somewhat reluctant appearance before the media after being released from the medical center, where she tried to put the day into context.“Definitely not a great ending, but I said before I came here that I feel like if it’s a complete disaster – complete, like not even in the ballpark at all and I look silly – then people may remember that,” she said. “And if I win, people will remember that. But probably anything in between might just be a little part of a big story. And that’s how it is.“I’m appreciative for all the fans, for GoDaddy, for Ed Carpenter Racing for giving me a good car. Today was a tough day. A little bit of it was OK; a lot of it was tough to drive.“I am very grateful for everybody and for being able to finish up like I wanted do. There were still a lot of great moments this month; a lot of great moments this year.”
