This has to be the best car film I've seen possibly ever, it's just so beautifully filmed and edited. Having Stirling Moss take the wheel 60 years on is just brilliant! Great job as always guys!

Motorsport Magazine have an article which was Dennis Jenkinsons description of the race. Try and find it. SM made a minimalist reference to the bridge take off but there were many. The first one was in the middle or a long straight. Dennis signalled flat out and straight ahead after. They went over this rise at nearly 8500rpm and that was just a bit over 200mph. They went over it and then was a sort of silence and they counted it...4

seconds. Do the maths. Another one was when Dennis trip notes disconnected from the roller. Over another crest except the road curved to the right. They just went on straight over the wire fence on into a paddock. SM kept it under control and they drove back onto the road. Amazing. Stirling Moss said the there were only two states when you race a car. One is full throttle and the other is braking so hard the tyres are chirping.

In between those is where the magic is. He demonstrated this quite some years ago. We have an annual race here, the Bathurst 1000. He was invited to co-drive one of the works GM cars. Second practice lap out, having never driven the car before on this 4 mile mountain circuit, he was lapping to within 2 second of the factory drivers. He pulled into the pits. The car had all four brakes on fire and the engine smoking out of the valve

cover breathers. He asked for some tyre pressure changes and "it could do with another litre of oil. I wont switch it off in case it doesn't start again." This was just untimed practice. Off he went again and broke the class lap record 4 laps later. Other drivers were in awe including some overseas ones. They said following him into corners showed some of the technique. He would lift off a little just to settle the chassis forces, dive

into the apex and come out the other side already at the red line to go up a gear, ready for the next one. No power slides as he said that meant you were slowing down. Fascinating. He does not race today for only one good reason. He said he no longer has the reaction times to be fast and safe.

I was at a race, track side, and there was a break between races. There were about two thousand people in the stands, above and around me. Sir Stirling Moss was making a short cut across the track. He jumped a barrier in front of me, all at once the crowd broke into spontaneous applause for Sir Stirling Moss. It was one of the most magical things I have ever witnessed, he gave a cheeky wave and the crowd loved it. He is a true gentleman.

The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance brings together not just the cars that made history, but the people who made it with them. Let's meet one of the legends who will be at the 65th Concours d'Elegance this weekend. In the late 1920's, Brescia, Italy was about to lose the Italian Grand Prix

to Milan. With a group of wealthy associates, they decided to create a race better and more epic than any Grand Prix. They decided to have a thousand mile race from Brescia to Rome and back, and call it The Mille Miglia. The Mille Miglia was an open-road endurance race which took

place in Italy from 1927 to 1957. This event was usually dominated by Italian drivers, but three races were won by foreign racers. One of those racers was Stirling Moss. Stirling Moss was Britain's top racing driver of the 1950's and early 1960's. He won 212 of the 529 races he competed

in, including 16 Grand Prix. Moss set the Mille Miglia record finishing in 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds, in his Mercedes Benz 300 SLR. Listen to how Stirling Moss set this record on such a treacherous and epic race! Tune in to Motor Trend OnDemand and the Motor Trend Youtube

Channel Sunday August 16th @ 4pm EST for LIVE coverage of the 65th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

No other race driver in any time or sphere had so many “day of days” as Sir Stirling Craufurd Moss, who died on Sunday at the age of 90. From the first “big one,” winning the 1950 Dundrod TT as a privateer a day before his 21st birthday, Moss consistently and regularly banked “pinch-me” performances, usually at the most fearsome race tracks and often against the odds.

Sir Stirling Moss, 1929-2020

Remembrances of Sir Stirling Moss

In both Formula 1 and sports cars, his career is liberally sprinkled with wins on the Nurburgring-Nordschleife, and great and dangerous road courses such as Pescara and, of course, the Mille Miglia’s epic lap of Italy. Most were victories that no other driver of his era — other than Juan Manuel Fangio, or perhaps Alberto Ascari — was capable of delivering.

The Mille Miglia in 1955 was the one that really stamped his special status, but Moss has always said he took the most satisfaction from his third win at the Monaco Grand Prix, in 1961. It was a season when once again he found himself cast as the underdog, against “those bloody red cars” of Ferrari. “Without a doubt, it was the hardest race of my life, and I consider it the best,” he said.

That day at Monaco, Moss lined up on pole position in Rob Walker’s privately entered and outdated Lotus 18, its side panels removed for cooling, against a trio of new Ferrari “Sharknose” 156s for the first grand prix of the 1.5-liter F1 era. At the start, he couldn’t stop American Richie Ginther’s Ferrari from taking the lead, but Moss hit the front on Lap 14 — and was still there on Lap 100 to take the checkered flag.
Moss at Monaco, 1961: “It was a subliminal, inch-perfect performance by a driver at the top of his game…” Motorsport Images

The trio of Ferraris had pressed and hounded, urged by a growing sense of exasperation and desperation from the pits. But Ginther, eventual world champion Phil Hill and Wolfgang von Trips couldn’t touch the boxy little Lotus on a day when Moss’s average lap speed was within a half second of his pole position time, while his fastest lap was three seconds — three seconds — quicker than his practice benchmark. It was a subliminal, inch-perfect performance by a driver at the top of his game; magical artistry, unrivaled skill, incredible focus and sheer cussedness by an all-time great.

Thereafter, Moss had no realistic chance to beat the Ferraris at most circuits. But at the Nurburgring, once again he had “one of those days.” On Dunlop’s “green spot” rain tires, and against said tire maker’s wishes, Stirling drove Walker’s Lotus, now in 18/21 hybrid form, to victory against the superior Sharknoses. Rain had helped, but it was not an all-wet race. The difference had been Moss himself, and team patron Rob Walker reckoned it a finer performance even than Monaco.
Another historic first from that ’61 season: Moss takes the Ferguson P99-Climax S4 to the first — and only — F1 win by a 4WD car at Oulton Park. Motorsport Images

That year, Moss would also win the usual mass of GT and non-championship F1 races, including victory in the Oulton Park Gold Cup in the Ferguson P99 — the only F1 victory for an all-wheel-drive car. But the following spring, his career would end violently against a grass bank at Goodwood during the non-championship Glover Trophy F1 race. Despite being in a coma for a month, Moss would recover, yet not in his own judgment to a degree that would allow him to reach the monumental heights behind the wheel that had become his trademark.
Moss before the start of the Goodwood Glover Trophy race in 1962, that would turn out to be his final F1 start. Motorsport Images

He’d finished runner-up in the F1 world championship in four consecutive seasons between 1955-’58, the last of which was only lost through a remarkable show of sportsmanship that all but handed the title to fellow Englishman Mike Hawthorn. But the title never really mattered. For Moss, winning individual motor races was what counted most, to be the best on a given day in whatever machinery he found himself. And in the final complete season of his career, he did so time and again — twice in the F1 world championship itself — in the best manner possible. When he slammed into that Goodwood bank on Easter Monday 1962, Stirling Moss was still absolutely at the very top of his phenomenal game.

Racing legend Sir Stirling Moss is hospitalized in Singapore with what his family described in a statement as complications from a serious chest infection.

Moss (pictured above at the Goodwood Revival meeting last September) was first hospitalized in late December after traveling to Singapore to escape the English winter. His recovery has been slowed by complications from the infection, but "his condition continues to improve and his doctors now consider him to be stable," according to the family.

"Once he is discharged from the hospital, it is Sir Stirling and Lady Moss' hope to stay in Singapore to enjoy a few days recuperating at a lovely hotel, being thoroughly spoilt, whilst lying in the sun by a gorgeous swimming pool," the statement added.

Widely regarded among the greatest all-around talents in motorsports history, Moss achieved success in grand prix racing, sports cars and rallying, although the F1 world championship eluded him. He retired from pro racing after being seriously injured in a 1962 accident, although he remained active in historic racing until the age of 81.
