6.4L powerstroke owners read

So i have a 09 F250 with the 6.4 in it and the other night i was driving home. After be on the interstate for about 10 miles i got off on my exit and punched it accelerator. the truck bogged down BADLY and blew white smoke out the exhaust. Called ford today jsut to see if they had heard about it. Turns out there is a problem with the air charger cooler??? its part of the emissions system.. I then mentioned that the filter regenerates itself for up to 30 miles continuously...they say that shouldn't happen and are looking at replacing basically the entire emissions system on the truck...just figured i would give yall a head up incase your having the same issues.

Clif notes:
After crusing for a while then applying full load to accelerator truck has white smoke = bad air charger cooler (that what ford calls it)
DPF regenerating for more than 30 miles = bad DPF
Just an FYI

go with a dpf delete, full 4" exhaust, and a spartan tune ;)

Hopefully Ford's able to get their shit together with the new diesel. They have built some really shitty ones the past 10 years.

last good one they built was the 7.3 o wait that was an international motor ford didn't even build it..

Wasnt the 6.0 also an international engine

I was just going to laugh at this and move on but had to comment.

The 6.4 is a crap engine, it's actually worse then the 6.0 I think. We've got a ton of them and they have ALL been in the shop for major repairs before 50K miles.

The 7.3, 6.0 and 6.4 are all built by Navistar. The new 6.7 is a Ford in house designed and built engine.

If I were you I wouldn't do anything to the truck as far as DPF deletes as the engine will still have issues. You can buy a 7 year 200K mile engine warranty for under 2 grand that will cover the majority of components that fail on these.

The biggest issue was that the 6.4 was designed as a interm engine to meet emissions in a short design time frame. It's biggest issue is cooling, if you look 90% of major failures are caused by cooling system failures (EGR, Oil, etc). The engine just generates too much heat for the cooling system that it is equipped with.

If you look at the new 6.7 engine Ford is now using a two separate cooling systems. One low temp and one high temp, I believe this to be their attempt a controlling their heat issues and thus failures. When I asked this question to a Ford engineer we were meeting with his face went blank and you could read that he knew they had cooling issues with the 6.4 and they were trying to prevent that with the 6.7.

The other design issue is that the 6.4 had to combat emissions with more fuel and no UREA. The new 6.7 is using UREA so it does not have to dump fuel into the combustion chamber to create enough heat in the DPF to burn of the excess soot and reduce NOx. There is no doubt that the fuel dump in the 6.4s causes a great deal of these issues.

we had a 7.3 that was upgraded with a turbo and a few parts. It is well over 300k now and no issues other than normal wear and tear items.

we also had a 6.0 for two years. put just shy of 190k on it. initially it ran like crap but the re-flash from the dealership it ran awesome.

Both used for hauling a two car trailer.

Only drove a new 6.4 once. Seemed to have more power all around and a nicer ride, but the price tag was too scary lol.

i know of many guys who had the 6.4 with the dpf, full exhaust, intake, and spartan tunes and havent had a problem yet..and getting great mpg if they stay out of it..

03AcuraCLTypeS 10-22-2010 03:27 AM

since they fixed mine i went from getting 13 MPG to averaging around 15-17 depending on how i drive it, without any mods. my gf's dad has a new 6.7, i hate the ride on it, it doesn't have as much get up and go because of the single turbo...and whats up with haven't to add exhaust fluid???

zhillz 10-22-2010 01:17 PM

^ I lol'd at first then I googled it. What in the fuck?

Blinker fluid is next....
