Any big lift kit you choose to do is gonna be alot of work whether its a stock style CV lift or an SAS, I guess it really comes down to what you intend to do with your truck once its done. If you just wanna make it big and not really do much offroading with it the CV will be fine. But if you do wanna take it off road and in the mud I would really think about an sas, it really sux being broke down it the mud, I know that first hand.
Yea you will be able too play some. But take going to an event like RYC or TCR for the whole weekend, Do you wanna be the one broke down doing nothing the rest of the weekend? If it were me i would want something with big tires that was reliable, that means good axles, are they cheap? No but neither are broken parts. So i would sugest really thinking about what you wanna do with your truck prior to making a decision.
Steve is right, but if its a DD, IMO, i wouldnt SAS a 1/2 ton. Its a ton of work and custom fab since noone really makes the brackets for 1/2 tons. ORD makes brackets and such for 3/4 tons but not 1/2s. Youll have to come up with the axles (then rebuild the axles), steering setup, driveshaft, brakes, running gear. An IFS lift can be done in a weekend and it just basically bolts on and go. If it were a weekend toy or something, Id SAS in a heartbeat. What sucks about the 1/2 ton 8.25 front diff is that we can't get any type of locker or posi. Noone makes one and noone will, so we are stuck with an open diff.
As for the Cognito, its all BS. The CV wear? BS. I had 175k on my stockers before I took them out with 100k lifted. I dont understand the "sit uneven" thing.. CVs constantly move up and down when youre driving anyways.. I also have auto 4x4 (NP246 T-case). I didnt have to do anything to my front shaft. It doesnt spin at full speed when in gear. You can test it by putting your truck in 4 high, put it in drive, APPLY E-BRAKE, and then reach under and see if the front shaft spins. If it does, you dont need the CV front shaft. Thats for the 7-9" kit. With the 10-12" kit, you will need a new DS.

If you want a locker up front you can put a 3/4 ton differential with hybrid cv's. Did one the other day.
