Changing Gears ?
How hard is it to change gears. I have a 1986 Toyo 4x4 currently with 488's and the correct gear would be 571's.
Do I need more than just ring and pinion ? I was quoted $1,600.00 with gears and installed. front and rear.

there are guids on how to do it but you must be precise. If you drive your truck on the road i wouldnt go with 5.71s...Actually, i wouldnt go with them period, they are weaker do to the amount of teeth and really fricken low.
I'll just stick with the 488's for now. the truck is'nt worth enough to do it anyway. I guess 529's would be the next step up from 488's ?

why do you think you need 5.71s? 5.29 is all you will ever need....if you need more gear open up your case or go double. If you do decide to change gears, youll need the ring and pinion and it would be a good idea to buy a rebuild kit and solid spacers for the third too.
btw, i saw your truck on cl. hows it run.

there is no room for screw ups when regearing either you know how to do it or you dont. do not attempt it if you dont know what you are doing. if they qouted you $1600 for ring and pinion f/r and both master install kits and labor that sound like a decent price but i would still shop around a bit. i have seen just the labor run from $300 to $500 per axle.

Its reaaly fun to drive. My little Girls love it. They thought it was great to go in a Ditch and sling mud before school the other day. I got worried when I was forced to use 4x4. It was advertized as a Mud truck and thats what it looks like untill I fix it up a little.
