Default Jeep and/or 4WD Crew? 2WD->4WD?

So what do you guys think about converting a 2WD to 4WD? Seem doable if one had the cash to do it?

I'm assuming it would to be just install front axle, front driveshaft, transfer case, interior shifter... Shouldn't be too difficult..?

Yes, it is a Jeep... 2000 WJ Laredo 4.0L... hook it up!

I've received a quote on the transfer case (NP242) for $460 shipped; and the front driveshaft for $130 shipped.. from qaparts.com..

Hook up the parts list so I can make sure I get all the right parts quoted.. I also need to find a good site for front axles (D30 at a minimum (that's stock size), D35C or D44 would be nice - but price talks), so if any of you know of a good site that has front axles (even used, refurbed, junkyard'ed), post up. I found a Jeep OEM parts dealer that sells brand new Mopar parts at discounts from list... Has the front axle with 3.73 ratio and Vari-Lok for 2159.50. Quite a bit more then I wanted to pay for a STOCK axle. W/O Vari-Lok is 1599.50..

Stupid question - Jeep uses the same tranny for both, right? I believe it's the 45RFE..

no actually it's quite easy on a jeep. Let me put you in touch with a friend of mine, he's the expert. Can you PM me a aol screen name or e mail. It does not require a whole clip as said above, it isn't like a ford or chevy where the cab has to be changed and all. All you need is the axle, transfercase and driveshaft. The control arms pitman and idler etc are all the same. D44 would be the way to go. I have a house warming party tonight so i'll have him respond in the AM with the list. He just picked up a 98 ZJ 5.9 limited and runs a blown 5.2 ZJ with the up country suspension. We have a XJ with 3" budget lift and 33" for the rocks. We know jeeps. I'll get the stuff for you tomm take it easy.

I'm sure this can be done for under 1K dollars, much cheaper then a new ride. Just a FYI
