Stropus Among Motorsports HoF Class of 2020 Nominees

Daytona Beach, FL — Finalists who will make up the Class of 2020 Induction Class for the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHFA) will be announced Friday (July 5) at Daytona International Speedway, and among them is nominee Judy Stropus in the Sports Car category. After nearly four years of curating content for this Vintage Motorsport eNewsletter, we have been the beneficiaries of her well-crafted publicity materials and are enthusiastic fans in her cheering section!

Nominees represent 48 motorsports legends, champions and innovators in eight different categories, and the Motorsports HoF shared this info about Stropus:


Best known for her savant-like ability to score and time even 24-hour sports car races singlehandedly, and with perfect accuracy and without a break, Stropus was sought out by top teams such as Penske, Bud Moore Racing, BMW, American Motors, Al Holbert, Ted Field/Interscope, Brumos, Bruce Leven/Bayside, Dick Barbour, Wayne Baker and Bob Akin.


Perhaps the ultimate recognition of her talent was that sanctioning bodies would often come to her to correct glitches in their own scoring. I saw that happen during Trans Am races during the Mark DonohuePenske/Camaro era.


As owner of JVS Enterprises, her list of public relations clients over the years included major OEM manufacturers, top racing teams and many others. In 2015 the Road Racing Drivers Club presented her with its coveted Bob Akin Award, given to the person who best exemplifies its namesake’s passion for motorsports and contributions to the sport and community at large.

Remembering Heidi Hetzer 1937-2019

What were the odds? Back over the Labor Day weekend of 2015 my wife Karen and I were vacationing in northern Michigan and found our way to the Upper Peninsula. Wanting to get a few shots of the Mackinac Bridge, we made our way down a narrow dirt road along the water, taking in a view of the 26,372-foot-long span across the Straits of Mackinac to connect the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan.

That’s when I heard unfamiliar engine sounds and around a nearby bend came a very old sedan, one that I did not recognize, and it pulled to a stop in a cloud of dust. A tiny blonde lady climbed out from behind the driver’s seat and a man from the passenger side. The car was adorned with stickers and a world map on each door which showed the route she was on. As it turned out this was the “Heidi Around the World” tour.

The 78-year-old Metzer had left Berlin on August 1, 2014 in this ancient Hudson and here in St. Ignace over Labor Day weekend, she had already been through Europe, the Middle East, China, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore, Perth in Australia, and recently leaving Canada. She was on her way to the East Coast when our chance meeting happened.

Hetzer explained to me with her German accent, “You can only do this when you are very young or very old. When I was a rally driver I always wanted to be first but ‘Hedo’ (what she named her Hudson) is much slower than modern traffic so I have to be patient.” She was retracing and extending the late 1920s journey of Clärenore Stinnes, a groundbreaking woman from the early days of auto racing. Her Hudson was powered by a 3.2-liter 60hp straight-8, and it topped out at 60mph, although she told me it was far more comfortable at 45-50mph.

She handed me her camera because she was pleased to learn that I was a photographer and also was the editor of Vintage Motorsport. She wanted photos of her and “Hedo” with the bridge in the background so I shot several. Her bright blue eyes sparkled with the energy and excitement of her adventure and I could tell she enjoyed telling me all about it. “I’m just an old woman in an old car. Most people dream about it, talk about it, but don’t do it. I’m living my dream!”

We bid our goodbyes and I wished her luck, because she still had many miles ahead. Heidi completed her incredible adventure in March of 2017, arriving in Berlin to a huge welcome and celebration. She was one hell of a lady, imbued with unbridled optimism and I was honored to have met her in such an unplanned way. So I was deeply saddened to learn of her passing this past week in her hometown of Berlin on April 21. So happy she got to live out her dream of traveling around the world, doing it in her own inimitable way. RIP Heidi. —D. Randy Riggs

David Hobbs Honored by RRDC at Long Beach

Long Beach, CA—In the annals of the racing scene, there has been no shortage of characters who keep the color and personality that creates the legends. David Hobbs, who was honored tonight by the Road Racing Drivers Club (RRDC) at their 11th annual Long Beach banquet, has garnered the accomplishments and gave the capacity audience here the room-filling personality that we all have admired for so long.

The RRDC’s annual event, which classically takes place on the eve of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, is a genuine who’s – who of racing. Legendary drivers such as Mario Andretti, George Follmer and John Morton, dined alongside team principals like Chip Ganassi, and Zak Brown — who was spied having a rather close conversation with youngest-ever IndyCar winner Colton Herta.


Hobbs joins an elite group of drivers, honored each year at the dinner that benefits the RRDC’s young driver initiatives, including its groundbreaking SAFEisFAST.com presented by Honda program. Previous honorees are Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones, Roger Penske, Jim Hall, Brian Redman, Mario Andretti, Bobby Unser, George Follmer, Emerson Fittipaldi and Johnny Rutherford.


Each year a short video written and voiced by Sam Posey, kicks off the show and a David Letterman-styled interview led by Bobby Rahal, roasts the honoree. As expected, many laughs and memories were shared. Rahal covered Hobbs’ 60 years in the sport, beginning when he raced his mum’s Morris Oxford in 1959. They discussed his 20 starts at Le Mans without a victory, his brief Formula 1 career, and his time in the Formula 5000, Trans-Am, Can-Am and IMSA series.


Hobbs, in his brief and humble acceptance speech said, “Being the honoree here tonight has been one of the biggest things that’s happened to me in 60 years of racing and I still really do feel so honored to be with people like Bobby Unser, Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones. To me, it all seems wrong. I shouldn’t really be here, because those were true greats of racing. I feel so honored to be honored tonight, so thank you very much.”

2019 Copperstate 1000 Kickoff Photos
