From MOTORING CLASSICS | SPRING 2014 Cocooned in their air-bagged cars, it
must be difficult for today’s teenagers to relate to the ton-up kids of the ‘50s. They’d gratefully missed out on WWII, but were born into austerity and desperately craved some actin. Then along came credit – probably not enough to fund four wheels but maybe sufficient for two. Films such as ‘The Wild One’, though largely banned in the UK, fuelled the desire for rebellious riding on roads still gloriously devoid of an overall speed limit. Add the new-fangled rock ‘n’ roll music and teenage hormones to the mix, and you’d got the basis for a major explosion! The infamous Ace Cafe has hosted just about every type of road user in its time. Now, with related operations in China, Finland, Germany, Japan and the USA, this iconic brand apparently knows no bounds. Where did the Ace come in? Simple – it was on a fast section of road tailor-made for racing, was open when other cafes were closed, and had rock ‘n’ roll permanently on tap. Yes, it’s not surprising that clean-living, middle- aged motorcyclists gave the place a wide berth in the ‘50s or that Mods avoided it like the plague in the ‘60s, but a lot of us secretly wish we’d been involved. First came the trucks .....The first cafe to adorn the site was opened by entrepreneur Vic Edenborough in March 1938 as a truck stop for the newly-created North Circular road. Open 24 hours a day with the capacity to feed 100 drivers at a time, and such mod cons as ‘central heating and toilets for both ladies and gentlemen, complete with hot and cold running water’, it was an instant success. So much so that Edenborough promptly added a garage and filling station alongside. Unfortunately, just two years later the nearby railway yards drew the attention of the Luftwaffe, who missed their target but hit the cafe instead. Undeterred, Edenborough ultimately replaced the building with a bigger, better one that at one stage was a mix of cafe and restaurant, employed 25 staff and served as many as 2,000 meals a day. The workshop made parts for Handley Page during the war and Ace folklore recalls that John Wyer of Le Mans Aston Martin, GT40 and Porsche 917 fame briefly operated there after hostilities had ceased. Another rumour suggests Colin Chapman may have carried out machining on the premises around the time he was constructing the Lotus MKI in nearby Muswell Hill. Whatever, the early ‘50s were undoubtedly the heyday for the Ace first time around and by the late-‘60s, when motorways had drawn much of the lorry traffic away from the North Circular and speed limits and the law in general had put the brakes on the rockers, the venue went into a steady decline, and served its last plate of egg and chips on November 4, 1969. Then came Wilsmore. Born in 1957, Mark Wilsmore was a shade too young to experience the rocker era firsthand, but has clearly always been one at heart. He couldn’t wait to get his first bike, though soon found owning them was one thing and staying on them apparently quite another – ‘my brother reckons I’ve spent five years of my life in hospital through motorcycle crashes’! In 1979 he joined the mounted police and admits his younger colleagues took the mickey out of him riding a classic British bike to work clad in traditional leathers. However, he had no problem linking up with like-minded souls away from work and fell into the role of ‘Mr Organiser’ of trips to The Dutch TT, Bol d’Or etc. Though familiar with the Ace as the tyre depot it had become, he had no recollection of its cafe days but, as soon as a fellow member of the West Middlesex Triumph Owners Club pointed out that Autumn 1994 marked the 25th Anniversary of the venue’s closure - ‘I knew there should be a reunion, and I should be the one to organise it’. There was and he did, and a staggering 12,000 motorcyclists attended. Clearly the Ace meant much to a lot of enthusiasts and so began a protracted project to purchase the site and resurrect the iconic cafe, which finally came to fruition in September 2001. These days there are some 10 bike and 20 car events each month – ie something every day except December 25. The Ace is now arguably the mecca for every car and bike enthusiast – in fact you simply don’t qualify as one until you’ve been there at least once!
