Taking on the Mint 400, America's toughest, most storied off-road race, is hard enough in a purpose-built race truck. But attempting it with a near-stock Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro? That's crazy talk.
Starting and finishing in Primm, Nev., the Mint 400 runs as a series of loops that cover everything from rocky mountain passes to flat-out dry lake beds. It's a tough ask for any vehicle, but the beating it puts on a stock truck – the frame, transmission, and especially the suspension – is way outside the normal operating envelope.
Get to the finish and you've earned some bad-ass credentials for your chosen manufacturer. But end the day at the side of the trail with a corner hanging off – or worse – and word gets around that the truck ain't everything it's cracked up to be...
Camburg Racing was the team hoping to conquer the Mint with a Tacoma TRD Pro. Based in Huntington Beach, Calif., it's a major player in off-road suspension systems and designs and builds its own race trucks, too. Still, competing with a near-stock vehicle offers a different set of challenges. It's as much about what you can't do as what you can.

Taking on the Mint 400, America's toughest, most storied off-road race, is hard enough in a purpose-built race truck. Attempting it with a near-stock Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro? That's crazy talk.
In Episode 2 of "Dealer to Desert," Jerry Zaiden and his team at Camburg Racing put the permitted finishing touches to their Tacoma, including additional safety features and longer-travel suspension for the Nevada desert's gnarliest terrain.



But unless the base vehicle is man enough for the pummeling it's about to get, any amount of optimizing isn't going to get it done. So, any doubts from Zaiden on his choice of truck as he prepares to shake it down? Nope.
"Choosing the Tacoma TRD Pro, that puts us at an advantage over any other truck in its class," he says. "This truck has larger axles, a larger differential, stronger spindles, beefier A-arms and a much stronger powertrain."

The preparation and testing is over. It's time for Camburg Racing to put up or shut up with its near-stock Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro in the Mint 400, America's toughest, most storied off-road race.
In Episode 3 of "Dealer to Desert," Jerry Zaiden and the Camburg Racing crew put the Tacoma through tech inspection on Fremont St. in downtown Las Vegas and rendezvoused with the guy who'll take the wheel for the race's opening loop, former "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno.
Testing went well, with Leno getting some valuable experience in the Tacoma. But testing doesn't come close to putting it on the line for 100-plus miles of beating and banging in the Nevada desert, and for the off-road racing rookie, there'll be no gentle introduction to a course loaded with suspension-destroying rocks and gulleys and sand beds that can eat a truck alive.
"Any tips for me?" asks Leno. "This is my first time doing this."
"Yeah, when you're out there, try and keep the tires on the ground..." grins desert racing veteran and loop-two driver Zaiden.

To give Leno every chance to do just that, off-road and rally ace Ryan Millen will be sitting alongside him as an extra pair of eyes and a guy who knows when to push and when to nurse if they're going to hand the truck over to second-leg driver Zaiden in one piece.
