Is there a price on principles?
That question faced Hillsdale College decades ago when the federal government demanded that we comply with regulations that would violate our principles and undermine our mission. The government’s justification was that some of our students and their parents were receiving federal student grants and loans.
Hillsdale refused. It told its students they could not bring taxpayer money to Hillsdale. It began raising private funds for student financial aid. It vowed that it would refuse to accept one penny of government money, even indirectly, in the future.
As a result, Hillsdale remains free to continue in its mission—to offer the kind of education needed to preserve the blessings of civil and religious liberty. And it has extended its educational mission nationwide though a massive outreach effort.
We know, as you do, that where there is money, there is control. And by refusing federal and state money . . . we’ve stayed free from federal and state control.
Today, Hillsdale College does more than offer its 1,400 students the finest liberal arts education in the land. We also educate millions of Americans, of all ages, about the principles of free government, the importance of the Constitution to liberty, and the virtues of the free enterprise system.

As you know, the Declaration of Independence set forth the principle that “all men are created equal” and “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights,” including “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The Constitution, then, erected a government designed to secure those rights.

Hillsdale College is working to keep this good and true story—the story at the heart of our nation’s greatness—alive in the minds of all Americans.

Doing so, Hillsdale has had to fight for its own independence. Four decades ago, federal bureaucrats asserted that, because Hillsdale students used federal grants and loans to pay their college expenses, Hillsdale was subject to federal regulations that would undermine its mission.

Hillsdale did not buckle. It told its students they could no longer take money from the government. It set about replacing that student financial aid with private donations. And to this day we refuse to accept EVEN ONE PENNY of government funds.

This frees us to play a major role in teaching Americans about the Constitution. One way we do this, in addition to teaching our students here on campus, is through our free online courses on the Constitution available to citizens nationwide.

In addition, Hillsdale has expanded its educational mission to the nation’s capital, where it offers programs on the Constitution to opinion leaders and policymakers, including members of Congress and their staff.

It does this through Hillsdale’s Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship, located on Capitol Hill. The Kirby Center is an increasingly vibrant hub of educational activities, and there is increasing interest in Washington in learning what the Constitution requires and how to work our way back to limited government.

This week and next, most American college students are home with their families, and parents are assessing whether they are getting their money’s worth. In the great majority of cases, I can assure you, these students are not learning the most important things from a civic standpoint: the history of America and of our nation’s great heritage of liberty.

I hope you are well today. At Hillsdale College this week, we’re celebrating the life of Winston Churchill and are excited for the new film about his leadership during World War II, Darkest Hour. Arguably, no statesman shaped the twentieth century more than Winston Churchill.

Actor Gary Oldman, a friend of mine, plays Winston Churchill in the new film Darkest Hour, which I highly recommend. I have put together a short video review of this film that I thought you might enjoy.

Churchill is one of the greatest statesmen in history, and this film is one of the best portrayals of him I have seen. Unlike most Churchill films, it’s exciting, and it captures the essence of the man and of his dedication to freedom. It’s a wonderful thing to see.
