Americans understand that our government isn’t working as it should. This is reflected in polls going back several years. But why isn’t it working?Our Constitution gave us a government sufficiently powerful to secure the rights of its citizens, but strictly limited so it would not infringe on those rights. The Constitution’s central feature is the separation of powers: the division of government into three separate but equal branches—the legislative, the executive, and the judicial—each with the power to check the others.But today, our government doesn’t operate according to the Constitution.

This is obvious in the fact that over the past 50 years and more, power has been centralized in a fourth, unconstitutional branch of government—the federal bureaucracy, made up of independent agencies (like the EPA) staffed by unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats.How and why did this new way of governing come about? And how do we return our government to working as it should—under the Constitution!On September 17, Constitution Day, Hillsdale College is launching a new free online course that will supply crucial answers to these questions.

There is a battle in our country over the direction and purpose of education. It began a long time ago.Woodrow Wilson, a founder of the Progressive movement in America, said over a century ago: “the purpose of a university should be to make a son as unlike his father as possible.”

Can you imagine any thought more destructive of preserving liberty?Over many years, both K-12 education and higher education has been transformed by this way of thinking. It is no accident that so many Americans graduate from our high schools and colleges knowing so little of American history and government.

As you know, Hillsdale is one of only a handful of American colleges and universities that still requires a one-semester course on the U.S. Constitution, in addition to courses on Western civilization and American history. We also produce online courses, and offer them free of charge to any citizen wishing to learn.Over one million citizens have already taken our most popular free online course, “Constitution 101.” Our courses on American history have been similarly successful.

This month we are releasing a new free online course: “Congress: How It Worked and Why It Doesn’t.” This course is of great importance in understanding how our government has departed from the Constitution, and how this can be reversed.We offer these online courses free of charge, because proper education is critical to preserving liberty. As you know, Hillsdale’s online courses help advance the educational mission of Hillsdale College by teaching all who wish to learn about Constitution, history, literature, theology, economics, and more.To keep improving this experience and make the courses even more effective, we recently updated the online course website. More new features will be released in the coming days and weeks, so please let me know if you have any feedback, questions, or suggestions regarding those updates.

Some of the changes you may have noticed right away: the courses no longer include quizzes, Q&A videos, audio downloads, or discussion boards. The progress tracker and profile have been removed for now, but we are working on an updated profile page that will automatically track your progress and course enrollments. Any previous enrollment information will be moved over to the new system for you as well.
