I want to let you know that my friend Gary Oldman recently won the Academy Award for “Best Actor in a Leading Role.” His portrayal of Winston Churchill in the film Darkest Hour is one of the best I have seen.
Last December, Gary Oldman and producer Douglas Urbanski visited Hillsdale College for a screening and panel discussion about the film’s production and significance. One of Gary’s memorable lines—“If Winston Churchill could take on Adolf Hitler at 65, I could sit in a makeup chair for three and a half hours.”

Writer, director, and producer Billy Wilder (1906-2002), an Austrian-born immigrant to America, won seven Academy Awards and was nominated eight times for best director. This fourth and final CCA of the 2017-2018 academic year will explore Wilder’s life, genius, and legacy.

The early response to “Constitutional Conversations,” Hillsdale’s new interactive online learning program, has been even better than we expected. In just two short weeks, over 13,000 citizens from over 40 states and over 80 countries have enrolled.

Here are some notes from participants:
We are proud to have 13,000 citizens deepening their constitutional knowledge and sharpening their abilities to debate the issues of the day. But 13,000 are not enough. There are so many more citizens to reach, and so much more to be done, as we work to elevate the national conversation about politics.
As you know, Hillsdale refuses to accept even one penny of federal or state taxpayer money. Our unique independence allows us to stay true to our mission: educating for liberty. It also means that all we do, including “Constitutional Conversations,” depends on the support of private individuals who know the importance of education to liberty.

I’m pleased to announce Hillsdale's newest online course: “The Young Jane Austen: Northanger Abbey.” If you have read any of Austen’s novels, you know that her writing reveals timeless truths about human nature and illuminates the beauty of everyday life.
Austen is most well-known for her novel Pride and Prejudice, but the first complete novel she wrote—and one of the last one’s published—was Northanger Abbey. In this novel, which Austen wrote in her early 20s, Austen parodies the romanticized fiction popular in her day, especially the gothic novel.
But deeper than that, Northanger Abbey is an education in what makes good character. It teaches us about virtues such as courage, prudence, generosity, and justice. These valuable lessons are relevant to all of us, at any time in history.
